Clio 172 cup rally/race/track car

  Audi rs3/Clio 172cup
So before the agbo stages I went on a little shake down of the Clio around north wales on the country roads. Mid week the roads are dead and you can have a little fun.

After about 5 miles the suspension was knocking bad.

This top mount being the culprit

So after a last minute rush to find two standard mounts. I got them fitted and tracked the night before the rally

Unfortunately the event got cancelled due to heavy snow.

I’ve now got an entry in for the smc stages at Anglesey, which should be fun because I know the track and stages well

  Twingo 133 Cup,
Just joined back up to the forum to look at the rally build threads to help me with my build. Really enjoyed reading yours and let us know how you got on.

SMC stages update

The day started off well. Each stage we were getting progressively quicker and quicker. Going into stage 5 we were 37th overall, which I was happy about considering my first rally, the entry and the car still having the standard diff.

Stage 5 is where it all went wrong.
All the stages used a part off the circuit where you go off the broken tarmac at the top of the circuit and onto gravel/rocks. It was really rough catching the sump guard on every occasion. Bit of a pointless section. No one could view up there and it killed quite a few cars today

On stage 5 coming off the loose I hit a big hole, then from that went over the jump, into a tight right, dropped the box into 1st and it wouldn’t go in first time round, Then got it into 2nd and I could tell something was wrong. The car was pulling all over the place. Pulled off and seen gearbox oil all over the floor.

Got it into service and the gearbox casing is cracked and the diff is ha going out.

Whilst in service my brother didn’t come in.
He’d damaged his gearbox in the same stage. His box went the corner after ours went.

So we were both out. But gutting as he was 3rd in class and we were getting quicker and quicker each stage.

Now time for a proper box with a diff which the cars needed for some time now

How did Jackson get on?
He was flying in the first stage, stage 2 his clutch was slipping. Then stage 3 we had the joint stage time. Stage 4 we managed to get past him. Then in stage 5 when we went off the marshals told us he had it on two wheels and nearly rolled it ripping his bumper off
In the end I think he was 34th overall which is decent cosidering the entry

  Twingo 133 Cup,
Sounds like you had a very hard event but I am sure you learned a lot in a short space of time. I did Mull as my first rally in 2016 and that was definitely an experience!

I bet that was fun for your first rally. Straight in at the deep end

A few pictures of the car from the weekend. I’ve got some onboards to upload to YouTube and some clips from special stage

Yes it was interesting to say the least! Hope to be out in the new car I am building this year as not done a rally since.
Its brilliant to have pictures of the car doing an event. I hope your luck changes for the next event

One video up on YouTube.
For some reason the on boards fail after a few minutes, but I’ll keep trying

On board from stage 4.

Ended up with quite a decent time considering I made a few little mistakes and the cars pretty much standard engine and box wise.

I’ve now ordered a lsd, 5.25 final drive and a lightened flywheel.
Can’t wait to get the box built now. It’s needed it for some time

  Audi rs3/Clio 172cup
So since smashing the gearbox to bits at Anglesey I’d been waiting on delivery of some new parts.

My RSX racing solutions lsd, 5.25 cw&p and lightened flywheel have arrived from Spain over the past week but I’d been on holiday in Mykonos.

These should be fitted alone with the gearbox rebuilt over the next couple of weeks, ready for Anglesey again on the 1st of July.
I just need to figure out what clutch to use.

  Twingo 133 Cup,
Been following this with interest. Seen 106 on special stage the other day. Just busy deciding what event to do in the new twingo after not doing a rally since mull in 2016.

I’ve just been looking at your build now. Love a little Twingo r2. Your not the only one building one at the moment either. I know of another that’s pretty much finished.

Yeah he got up to 3rd in class before his box went. 1st in class was a proper 208 r2, 2nd was an M-Sport r2 fiesta. No ones got a hope against cars like that in the class, especially the lay out they had with long straights and no chicanes.
My brothers now doing some engine work on the 106 to get around 180bhp. He’s now on bodies, gas flowed head and stand-alone.

I think the only way to beat the r2 cars is to get your car as light as possible as the r2 cars are homologated to a weight the twingo r2 is 1030kg for example. Your brother should be able to get 200kg lighter than that I would think. I would like to be down to 900kg. Your Clio must be fairly light though?

The 106 is considerably lighter than the Clio. It’s got fibreglass bonnet and boot, with a poly rear screen.
Where as mines got the standard bonnet, boot and rear screen.
When we have to push the cars around to move them the 106 takes hardly any effort

A shame we have to keep steel doors to be honest, as that's a big weight saving that's restricted. Saying that, I can certainly understand why they don't allow it. Have heard they are going to stop people cutting the inside of steel doors out too.

If you want a heavy rally car, try pushing my Escort about, it's a right lardy bugger lol.

Yeah think there are all sorts going to come in within the next few years.
Is your Escort that heavy? I know my puma was a lardy arse but used to fly well on Mull though!
What size wheels are you using Nathan? Got the Twingo on speedline Turbines at the moment.

I think you're right there. I don't think the MSA will be happy until we're all in FIA homologated cars that cost huge sums of money.

I'm keen to weigh the Escort. It's pretty close to finished now so it's going to be interesting to see where it's at. The works cars were homologated at 960kg with all steel panels (albeit paper thin steel), but even they weren't always as light as that. I would hazard a guess at mine being in the region of 1100kg but that is a bit of a guess. A road car is 1150kg I believe. I have fitted GRP wings and taken a lot of weight out since I bought it, but the engine and box are pretty weighty in mine. Going to GRP bonnet and boot would help me out for sure but I couldn't really justify the expense at the time. I'm always going to struggle with a standard engine though!

Yeah I don’t think I’d have fibreglass doors even if they were allowed. The the Clio doors are really heavy though.
I haven’t skinned anything on mine. I’d rather a little heavier bonnet than a flappy one ?

15” mate. Loads more of a choice with tyres. I’ve got 8 speedline 2118’s now, 4 turbines and 4 15” clio wheels

So the gear box has been dropped off to have the diff and cw&p fitted. I can’t wait to see what the car drives like now.

I’ve started getting some bits sorted for the prom stages in September. On the Friday night there’s two stage in the dark.
I’ve bought a second hand bonnet pod off a Saxo and some bumper pods. These will hopefully get delivered some time this week

The cars still sat in the same place and not moved in 2 months.

I forgot to mention I bought a carbon nav rest to match the drivers side
