cup clutch....

any other cup owners out there suffering with a slipping clutch..most noticably between 1st and 2nd and 4th 2 5th...took mine into local dealer..told them what the crack was and said what i didnt want was a phone call saying they couldnt find a problem (cos there clearly is)

so what happened...

they said they couldnt find anythin wrong...

so i went down and took the mechanic out meself...scared him in the process and as if by magic..a slipping clutch..now they are sayin its down to renault toi decide what to do..the cars only done 2000 miles..

the dealer also said that the car wasnt designed to be driven like that..reving it to 6500/7000..as it was a road car with road clutch..not a race car..

anyone else had similar problems...please advise..thanx

and no i aint restin my foot on the pedal...

My dealer fitted a new clutch under warranty at about 2,500 miles.

They gave me the same little talk about driving it too hard but I showed them the promotional material I was given about how it was built to cope for trackday etc...

Since then theyve changed the ECU and the gearbox as well!!!

Renault are really P***ing me off at moment and stories like this make me even more convinced not to buy a nother renault. I bet if you ring customer services and ask them what the score is they will refer you straight back to the dealer who says it is upto renault uk. Its like being passed form pillar to post. No one accepets responsibilty or genuinley appologies.

Its simple in my view, if the design is not able to withstand the performance of the car then dont make the car. I was told that my 4k rattle was all to do with the amount of torque the engine generates and the forces on the exhaust. To quote myself " Clearly you design and testing approach is inadequete and I have spent 14k on poorly designed and manufatcured car" Of cause they denied this was the case. How esle can it be........

My clutch went at 20K, they said it was clearly a case of abuse as the pressure plate was distorted and the plate was blue.

Would this be the case if they had made the clutch and its related ancillaries out of a decent enough material in the first place!! I think not. (And watch out, they want the best part of £500 quid to change it) I ran a MK2 16V golf for 60K, equally as hard and the clutch only went in the last 10K.

It seems to me that Renault have put a cracking little hot hatch on the market, but the quality has a lot to be desired. (I thought it was too good to be true) New tyres at 6K due to torque steer (which if it had traction control would mean more 12-15K), new clutch at 20K!! Will it every stop!!

Hi there
Seems to be a common problem. Mine slips in first (driven hard), let it sort at first service (20000 km).
Cheers
Sandro

I had mine replaced at 1500 miles... the mechanic took it out with me... drove it about 500yds and went yep thats slipping it turned out the oil seal on the back of the crank was dumping oil all over the clutch...

mate - i had my clutch replaced just recently (at 15k kms), also had half of the gearbox replaced due to leaks. while they were doing it they replaced engine mounts and tightened biits of exhaust. as a result 4k rattle is hardly evident, squeaks have gone and car is going well again.

if they say it isnt supposed to be driven at 7k revs - that bullsh*t!!!! They promote it as such and should select components that can take it. dont pay 500 squid for the clutch mate - they should fix it as its their problem.

its the Clio sport, not a normal clio. why do you pay more - because it is quicker has better everything an is a little race car. as such it should stand up to the pressure - as simple as that.

ps: dont want to hijack the post - but what is this "driving with my foot on the pedal" - Im re;latively new to cars and dont know exactly what this would do if you did it. can anyone claer that up for me quickly?

cheers Martin

re martin 172... cos the bitin point is so high on the cup its easy to make the clutch slip if your restin your foot on the pedal whilst drivin...

thanx 2 everyone regardin my clutch question..just waitin for call from renault to see what they are gonna doabout it..cheers

EVO magzine run a Cup and guess what the clutch went after a good 20,000 miles. Regulary use it on the track and Renault changed it for free no argument! They also missed the first service by 12KM as dealer told them the wrong info on service intervals.

Renault activley encourage Clio Sport owners to do trackdays and organise them so they have no leg to stand on regarding abuse as they cant prove its wasnt faulty when it went on.

Remember that as far as faults go, if you get a fault within six months of taking delivery, in the eyes of the law, that fault is deemed to have existed at the time of sale. The burden is on the supplying dealer/company to prove that the fault did not exist when it was sold.

Tell em to change it for free...or provide proof that it was functioning 100% when you took delivery.

mine sort of slurred rather than slipped at such. it doesnt slip when driving at all, just sometimes slurs if you change very quickly and apply lots of power. So now i dont accelerate hard until the clutch is fully engaged.

My second Cup did this when I first got it but went over time (sold it).Think this would be due to the pressure plate and not the clutch though.

Mine didnt slip, it just started to bite right at the top of the pedal and was difficult to get right when changing from first to second.

Renault had a look and said that the pressure plate was distorted - consistent with it being Snatched ( I did change gear back into 4th at about 95 from 5th very quickly and there was a bang!!) and the clutch plate was blue consistent with abuse. (if they made it out of performance clutch material and decent heavy duty stuff im sure it could take a lot more abuse!! I could drive it harder then!!!
