Does it have to spit flames?

  172 cup TT
(Mods move this plz if its in wrong section, torn between other marques / engine mods or here)

When a car gets to a certain power is there nothing you can do about it spitting flames from the exhaust?...

I know a couple of VAG IHI 1.8t's running around the 320bhp mark which "do" ridiculous flames... i.e like this link of an RS (posted before) running a very similar turbo/power on the M25 :

Sorry but i would feel a right numpty flaming like that...

Is there anything that can be done to stop this or at least calm it a bit?... i'm guessing its down to mapping of some sort.. you dont see M3's / RS4's etc doing that (as standard)

usually this is all down to the mapping of the car. My evo does quite a bit of pop/bang/spit flames when you give it some stick and come off the gas. exhaust has to be hot!....... The ECU has just been reporgrammed to r****d the ignition timings so that it dumps some fuel when you lift off - this burns in the exhaust giving you the flames & popping. if you want to do it propely though, get anti lag :D

there are ways to curb it, its harder as the egt's are so much higher on a turbo car....

each condition is different, so needs to be mapped accordingly to reduce the flames...

the exhaust system massively effects this too,

I thought that anti-lag was loud ?? I heard an evo that was running it & it sort of sounded like a gun going off.

That focus isn't making any weird noises like that.

you cant really hear the car tbh, but it only does it off boost like anti lag would.
its not always overly loud depends how the exhaust is set up as all antilag basically does is advance the timing so that combustion happens when the exhaust valve is still open.. expanding gasses spin the turbo up
but obviously depends how silencing the exhaust is.

i doubt anyone with a road car would use antilag as it kills turbos...

on a turbo car flames are easy..... its harder not getting them with lots of fuel and a really really hot exhaust
