Control box arrived today. Confused as to why it more expensive to post something in England than it is to send that from Portugal but hey ho. Instructions could be followed by a lemming

Quick question, as the new rack has 2 bolts to go directly onto the frame what bolts have you guys used? Also what's this sensor on the rack, I assume I just won't plug it in.

I would say that's the angle sensor, either that it the torque sensor. That won't be needed as the control box fakes the signal.

Any bolts will do, best to re-use the 2x original bolts (there free) if you can get matching nuts. Me personally I would have some sort of locking aid, spring washer, lock tight etc etc just to be sure.

Managed to rewire the plug for the power which was horribly fiddley but better than having a join in the cable. Just posting incase anyone is wondering if its possible. I had to be very careful when opening up the crimps and resecuring them

I wish I'd done that - the power cable the auto electrician made for me looks horrible with joins all over the place but hey ho it'll do for now

On the rack that's an angle sensor and yes you just leave it unplugged
I used the 2 top bolts that were holding the old beam on as they're high tensile. As said some nyloc nuts if you've got them are handy

The tricky bit is the nut for the hole closest to the column (you can see it on the 3rd pic) you can't use the old nut which has a captive washer because it's designed so a hex nut slots into the bracket and doesn't spin while you tighten the bolt. It was a bit tricky to get a nut to sit in the slot and line up with the bolt

I will be finishing this weekend so will post a guide once it's all done and I'm happy it's working well. It wont be any use to anyone with a/c though as I'm using this set up. Can't imagine many people doing this mod though which are still pansy enough to need cold air!

I have all parts ordered and on the way except wires but will buy and make them once I have everything else.

How are people finding the new aux belt setup? The new root significantly reduces the amount of contact with the water pump pulley. Just wondering if anyone has seen any issues?

I will let you know on Monday. There is enough contact I'm certain. Got an 5pk825 belt which should be tight enough.

I am sure there is as well, but it is also a significant reduction compared to the standard set up. Just wanted to see if any of the early runners had noticed any issues.

Is anyone else running the renault 5 set up. I've got a 5pk825 as I measured (twice) and its very tight. Just wondering what other people are running with this.

8pk, nooo can't be, slippery number finger ;)

Don't want to keep spending a tenner on a belt so I'm going to cut this freshman, wrap it round and see how much I've got left over.

Ass, wanted to be running this weekend. I did turn her on today though, revs very freely

Fitting the control dial today. Cut the stalk down yes? It's rather long at the moment.

Also measured up a new belt using a brand new belt (cut, wah) 5pk838, if that doesn't fit I WILL cry.

WHY... what's wrong with string?

WHY... what's wrong with string?

I measured up with string and it came out about 5mm too short annoyingly. I think the string sits tighter around the pulley than the belt does. Measuring a belt with a belt must be the best way. I'll have to report back.

Phil, where exactly did you mount the PAS ECU. I've been hunting around for your elusive bracket for ages !!!!

Oh there's still thread left - it's not bottomed out - but there's at least 20mm above the bracket lol it sticks up quite a bit

Grazo - under the drivers side of the dash on the far right hand side nearest the door

There's a slot that the metal bracket the ECU comes with slots into and then a little m8 or m6 bolt that holds it in place
You can see it quite easily if you have your dials and top of dash out on the far right hand side

found it, took some photos for the guide. Got all the wiring done and in today. Putting the rack on tomorrow and it should be a wrap (apart from the belt)

Got the clicking from the relay so I assume it's working. Will have to wait to get her on the ground to see if the adjustment works.

I went out for a play in mine for the first time on Friday... man it's awesome
It literally feels like a new car again, the steering is so quick and precise. Clearly the old inner tie rods were well past it

The EPAS is interesting though - anything less than 70% on the road at 30mph speeds is a bit of a struggle lol.
Got the car setup though with -2.3camber at the rear and -3camber at the front, bit of toe out, and my god does it feel good!!

Can't wait to get to Cadwell in 2 weeks now

Great stuff Phil :)

Who is the Cadwell day with in 2 weeks? I could probably get mine finished for then and need to get around Cadwell before I race there!

It's with Javelin mate - just a 2.5hr evening session that I thought would be good to give the car a shakedown and see how it all performs
It's all sold out now though - unless they have someone drop out :(

Dohh I need to do a full day anyway as it will probably need a fair few tweeks throughout the day! Have fun though mate :)

Just been going through everything making sure I have all i need to start the conversion and I am missing the plug that puts power into the ECU. Bugger. Any ideas where I can get on at short notice?
