Home made 'Maxogen' fitted today...

Will get it on the next Surrey Rolling Road to see if this Espace V6 airbox has made any difference.

So, the afternoon started with Mike ripping this out...

The seat-of-the-pants dyno says that power characteristics are the same (steps up at 4k and more noticeably at 5k), and it seems a little keener over 5k. Disappointed I can't hear anything from it so an ITG element will be sourced instead of the standard crappy Renault paper one.

What should I do next to make the most of this?

Cams?
Proper tailored remap?

Cos you've removed the fuel rail gaurd does this mean your going to burst into flames if you have a front ender?

What did you have to grind out then?
 
Custom remap will get the best gains. Be tempted to get the rstuner kit, far cheaper than getting a remap done anywhere else.
 
Might be worth making a heat shield to bolt where the fuel rail gaurd used to be? Stop the rising heat from the manifold? Can't imagine it would cost much if you used some custom stuff from demon tweaks or even lifting some heat shielding from the engine bay of a scrap yard car. Just an idea.
 
Surely thats going to encounter water issues? I know its not a daily drive but your going to get caught out somewhere along the line.

How? It's level with the headlights, not the lower grill (which a lot of people use)? No more likely to get water problems than with standard.
 
Nice! How come you've gone over the other side though? Surely the CAF will get hot from the rad air?

The intake manifold? Don't think that's worth using a heat shield on tbh. setup looks pretty good as it is IMO. Even the 90 degree bend isnt that brutal.
 
could the box not be twisted to have the air intake on offisde headlight side where the std setup takes its feeds from?

although thinking about it there isnt much room down behind the headlight so maybe the 64mm pipe wouldnt go down there.

i like it and looks good.
 
Girth, that's what it's all about for me.

Air feed after the filter into the bend is 39cm2 in area, but the standard airbox only has a feed in before the filter of 35cm2.

Routing it this way means I've got a full 64cm2 to suck through and feed the filter...so theoretically, the engine can/will make more use of the 39cm2 available through the bend.

Ram air effect? I've no idea...it might give turbulence in the bend causing negative pressure? Anyone in the know able to comment?

Heat shield is something I'll consider though...should be easy to do and should bring some benefit.

Well surely water will enter and run down the pipe and also the alternator rain guard has obviously been removed so the alternator is open to water now.

Do you not think water could enter the standard pipe? The only thing removed was a bolt which was cut down?

I think it'll be fine. If water does get as far as the filter box, which i can't see, it'll just sit in the bottom and evaporate out soon enough
 
Can you not take out the paper filter and fit a cone filter? Will give you that bit of noise you're after too...
 
If you want more noise disconnect the end of the caf from the airbox, so its pointing at it, rather than attatched.
 
Can't say I've noticed any difference low down, still kicks up at 4k, then again much harder at 5k.

Does seem to pull harder through from 5k though, and continues right through 7k too.

Difficult to tell, as it always had enough to spin the wheels in 2nd before this change so can't feel anything there...and I've not had much chance on the roads to explore the upper reaches of 3rd and 4th (and when I did I got blue flashing lights behind me!).

Hopefully the planned Surrey rolling road day goes ahead early Sept.
