M100CUP - RB 182 Sprint and Hillclimb Car

I've rather enjoyed that's read, Really well put together!

Any chance you'll do any track days or are you looking to stick to hills?

Look forward to any tweaks and changes you may have

Thanks for the good feedback ..... a bit of tinkering this afternoon as the sun was shining. Let me try to answer some of the questions from above:

Great write up! How do you rate the r888r tyres? I'm very tempted with them.

  • If I was to score the Toyo R888R I would give them a 7 or an 8 out of 10.
  • I like that they have a pretty solid sidewall which helps reduce roll in hard cornering;
  • I don't think they are particularly cheap or good value for money;
  • They don't seem to react to change in tyre pressures (perhaps that's because the sidewall is pretty stiff?). To try to reduce understeer (in a hillclimb) I've run them at a range of pressures from 18 psi to 28 psi and couldn't tell the difference :-(
  • Plenty available (some of the big national companies like Bathwick do them .... so includes 'free fitting, balancing and valves');
  • They are ok in the wet - not good or brilliant but ok;
  • They don't seem to wear very well - I have a fair bit of negative camber on the front and they seem to wear quite badly on the inside . I got through two front tyres in 3 hours at Llandow - but it was fun :)
  • I used Toyo R888Rs because they are MSA list 1B approved for my class of motorsport ... my tyre of choice would be Kumho Ecsta V70a - available in 4 different compounds. They don't look sexy like you would expect competition tyres but they are damned good.

For 2017 and when this set of R888Rs wear out, I will try the Extreme VR2 (road legal - list 1b). Treadwear '80' so should be pretty soft and grippy -

Not been to Castle or Wiscombe Park for a couple of years. I really need to get out more.

Great thread and epic car.

Thanks ... you can't be far from Castle Hillclimb at Lostwithiel? Do call in and say 'hello' this summer. @Brushwood69 will probably be there as well in his mega Audi TT.

That's 'the' reason I went to a PMS unit, the reach was awful with standard. The more positive feel was a bonus.

Yes - I must change the gear lever / mechanism. As a temporary fix to stop my gloved hand slipping on the gear level I've put a knobbly cover over it.

DSC_0174.JPG

Its a bit like one of them knobbly condoms - or so I've been told as I don't use them myself. In the pic above you can see how short the gear lever is :-(

I've just bought a new cam mount as well for the roll bar..... the mount from the Caterham didn't fit the bigger diameter tube of the Clio cage. Less than a fiver off E-Bay. It doesn't look very solid but at a fiver (post free) I though i'd give it a go.

If you look closely in the pic above you can see I've strengthened one of the spring loaded joints with a fillet of araldite.

Probably 20 minutes max, so no excuses really. Need to see how Neil is getting on with his Scooby powered Clio too. Haven't seen that for a while so I shall pop over.

That looks like an aftermarket short gear knob?

Doesn't look oem to me. And with the cover on it just looks like you're hiding your package! Be proud of what you were blessed with.

You could get creative like me and make your own! That's in neutral there.

Also very short bit showing how easy it was to change gear. Don't blink

Have you purchased a set of the VR2's before Graham? and if so do you mind stating what outlet you used?

Thanks.

No - I haven't tried them yet but I want to give them a go. @SonicBoom (Rich) was trying to arrange a bulk buy of Supersoft compound which are only made to order - minimum of 20 tyres. I'm not sure what's happened as it seems to have gone quiet on the bulk buy front. My understanding is that you contact them through the website - and they give you a quote for what your interested in (tyres made in Poland, delivered from Germany).

The last I heard from Rich was that the ..... 'Price for 4 x 195/50/15 VR2 in Supersoft Compound is £347.50 delivered'.

Please let me know if you order some :)

First competition of 2017 coming up on Sunday so as the sun was shining I spent some time checking over the car: nothing serious just checking all the fluid levels, tyre pressures etc. I've also got a full tank of fuel which I need to use ...

Looking at the tyres pressures, I decided to swap the front and rear tyres around as the rears still look like new but the fronts are showing serious signs of wear. Rather than bugger about I thought I'd take it down to the local tyre agency (Malvern Tyres) and ask them to swap them around for me.

I find it interesting that the Clio always gets the people talking - 'I had a 172 a few years ago' said one guy at Malvern - followed by much discussion that the rear seat is not an original 'cup' seat and the benefits he found of a de-cat pipe on a 172 . Another guy was interested in 'the engine and the throttle body set up'... and had I 'thought about Brembo brakes instead if Wilwood?'.

We spent quite a bit of time talking about the car in the warm Spring sunshine. Really nice guys - no charge for swapping the wheels around - just a donation to their coffee jar. One of the guys at Malvern wanted some photos for Facebook - so M100CUP is now on the facebook page for Malvern Tyres of Dorchester :)

Your right about Clio's being conversion starters. I took mine cut MOT on Saturday and got talking to the mechanic and he ended up showing me the 205 gti and R5 GT Turbo they have stored away. It's surprising what you find from a bit of common enthusiasm for a little clio!

I would love those 2 in my garage !

Yes, Clay Pigeon on Sunday April 2nd - kick off at 9.00 am. I'm car number 7..... lucky for some.

I got the 'finals' through last night and sadly there doesn't seem to be may entries for this event - I think a total of about 40 cars on the entry list. There are a few other (more prestigious) events this weekend which may explain why the numbers are down. I've set myself a target time of 86 seconds for the two laps.

The class I'm in (A3 - series production up to 2600 CC) has been combined with another class to make the numbers up. Its a pity because it really is a very safe, good, fun event which deserves more support.

I am at Anglesey this weekend but only doing the saturday round, entries are very down with only 35 ish its either too early in the season or people looking for more runs/££

First event of 2017 successfully completed ... no mishaps ... car ran well throughout the day.
If there was a prize for consistency then I would have won it -
Practice 1 - 87.66 seconds
Practice 2 - 87.97 seconds
Timed 1 - 85.95 seconds
Timed 2 - 85.86 seconds
Timed 3 - 85.88 seconds

Video of one of my timed runs from the afternoon below.....

Sad that there weren't more competitors there today as its a really fun venue - quite technical but great fun. The speeds are not great so it must be one of the safest events on the sprint calendar.
Some of the other competitors -
'Fastest time of the day' went to a superb OMS -

My favourite car was the Audi Quattro -

Interesting car in my class was a supercharged Lotus Elise (1800 K Series - not the Toyota engine).

Lots of Minis running in the DEWS championship today -

Good to see you Graham, saw your first timed run and the clio looked really strong, that was about it as i was chasing the little man around most of the time!!!!

That white mini belongs to the Dews chairman and engine builder Steve Harris. Its running an 8 port engine that he has built for a customer in Norway......one way of running it in !!!!!

Great Job Graham! Never done clay but must do more events up that way! Need to repair audi again  the first two runs at Treloy were amazing and even more torque and bhp than last year but end of run 3 the boost disappeared so I had to retire but still managed a 3rd!! When are you next in my neck of the woods?

Thanks ...yes it was good to chat. I have to say your young son is great fun..... make the most of these early years as they soon grow up into teenagers :)
There were a number of really nice Minis at Clay - sadly I grew up with the original Cooper 'S' Minis and I have a real itch for one. As soon as I get a bit of garage space I might just have to scratch it.

Thanks Nathan. Sorry to hear the Audi is poorly ... but you are too fast already - you don't need even more BHP and even more torque :) I also think to ensure a level playing field with the majority of Class A3 you should disconnect the drive to the rear wheels.
My next event is Wiscombe Park (April 22nd and 23rd) - I've nothing booked after that as my wife is talking about holidays. Will you be at Wiscombe? Two events I'd like to do are the Llandow Sprint (14th May?) and the Wiscombe event at the end of May. I'm afraid I don't think I'll be down your neck of the woods until the Castle Hillclimbs at Lostwithiel.

Some better photos from last Sunday's competition at Clay Pigeon ....

1) Two wheels off the circuit is allowed .... but 4 wheels off is a 'fail'. This rumble strip is just before a sharp left so I'm trying to reduce the severity of the curve by deliberately putting two wheels off ...
70821248-500_3737 enhanced.jpg

2) I quite like this one with the Clio peeking out from behind the crash barriers ......
70821242-500_0247 enhanced.jpg

3) Two wheels off again - there is a cone just out of shot. Hit it and its a 5 second penalty ....
70821245-500_2479 enhanced.jpg

4) Its that rear wheel lifting a bit? Bugger, I missed that apex....
70821243-501_0341-2 enhanced.jpg

5) One on the back straight ...
70821241-501_0014 enhanced.jpg

6) Quite close to the cone on the chicane ... hit it and its a five second penalty and it delays the next car starting whilst the marshal replaces the cone.

which tire pressure do you use front and rear in warm conditions
26 psi front and 24 psi rear ..... toyo R888Rs. I have to say I've experimented with all sorts of pressures between 22 psi and 30 psi but with stiff sidewalls I can't really tell the difference. That pressure is only for a short blast (sprint /hillclimb) with cold tyres and cold brakes ..... track day I'd probably go for a bit higher pressure.

Car is running really well.

Only thing I'd say is move the camera, you're getting a lot of vibration noise through the car
Good point .... The camera is on a cheap mount attached to the roll cage. It's rubber mounted but still loads on transmitted noise.

I think I'm due a new camera ..... The one I've got is a cheap [£30] banggood.com camera that's about 5 years old now. The sound has always been rubbish and i think the more modern cameras must have better sound quality.
The annoying thing is that the roar of the jenvey throttle bodies and the noise of the KTR exhaust are brilliant .... but I can't capture it :-(

You'll get there... and when you do, you'll be hitting the "Play Again" button all day long :tongueclosed:

Glorious Wiscombe!
Wiscombe Park is a gem of a motorsport venue... it is in picturesque rural Devon not far from Honiton and I think on a sunny day it is my idea of heaven. Even the beer tent has a selection of real ales from Ottery Brewery so its well worth a visit just for the catering and the ale.
April 22nd and 23rd saw the first event in the 2017 motorsport calendar at Wiscombe - the weather was fine and I even had a bit of sunburn by Sunday evening.
In a previous post I had winged that the Clay Pigeon sprint was under subscribed - this restored my faith in Class A3 with a fine range of cars to compete against. On Sunday there were 24 cars in class including -
  • 260 bhp Renault Williams Clio - truly beautiful car
  • Mitsubishi 'Taxi' (EVO spec)
  • A trio of new Fiesta ST's (one Mountune with 230 bhp, one Pumaspeed with a rumoured 290 bhp)
  • Supercharged Lotus Elise ('K' Series engine not the common Toyota version)
  • Turbocharged MX5
  • Supercharged MX5
  • well spec'ed Audi TT
  • Two immaculate Escort Mk IIs (very quick and well driven with lots of tail out fun)
  • and a selection of Golfs, 172s, 182s, 197s, 206 GTIs, Honda S2000, Toyota, BMW, etc
To add to the interest there were a number of other one marque classes over the weekend - the Porsche boys and the Morgan Owners club were in town:
My favourite - 997 GT3 version -

Talking to an old Caterham racing colleague who now has a Morgan, he told me he has taken six and a half stone of stuff out of his Morgan ...

I still have a soft spot for the Caterham ....

Results -
So enough of the pleasantries - how did it all go?
Very, very well!
  • On Saturday I managed a third in class beaten by one of the Escorts and the Mitsubishi 'Taxi'.
  • On Sunday I had a fourth in class - same two who beat me on Saturday plus the Pumaspeed Fiesta ST pipped me as well.
Video from Saturday -

Looking at the results sheet (thumbnail below), its interesting to see that I'm losing a lot of time off the start line - I'm 0.6 seconds down to the Mitsubishi Taxi (4 wheel drive) in the first 64 feet!!!! The Escorts are quicker as well with their rear wheel drive.... I suppose its the weight transfer off the line that helps rear wheel drive.

IMG (2).jpg

Overall -
  • A great weekend - grassroots motorsport at its very best.
  • Very happy with a third and a fourth in class.
  • The Extreme VR2 tyres are working very well (i'll do a separate post on these in the 'tyres' section)
  • Couple of niggles - not happy with the gearbox!
I'll post some photos of M100CUP in action later in the week.... thanks for reading

Not sure but why but all the fwd times are over 3 secs to 64 feet, mine from Aintree were all 2.75 to 64 feet. Is the start slightly uphill ?

Good question..... its not uphill and I think I may have misled you: There is a bridge in the way of the timing gear so I don't think the 'launch' distance is a true 64 feet at Wiscombe. So i don't think you can compare the launch times between Wiscombe and, say, Aintree. Does this make sense?
