Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project [Year 3 - Engine and Chassis Rebuild]

Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project

Day 169

Got a few bits and bobs sorted over the last few days, blanked the heater matrix hole up with some sheet metal and welder...The welder I had lent didnt want to play nice, wire kept sticking then had no gas...so the welds took some tidying up. After that sealed it with black sealant for now so it dosent rust...

Also blanked up the hole for the blower unit inside the scuttle area, more on that next few days...

Anyway, painted the arches (inside and out) and the slam panel, underneath the bulkhead, chassis rails, and a few more 'out of sight' areas today, with hammerite. Alot of the parts had surface rust and marks, so decided to prep it then hammerite over it to protect it. Ive left the suspension turrets and bulkhead for now, as Im not sure if to do them black, or body-colored....They need doing as they are marked, and considering ive done half of the bay, why not go the whole way...

Finished the last bits that needed painting too...Top half of the 'slam panel', wishbones, a fresh coat on the driveshafts, and the one remaining caliper...

Gearbox now finished also, just needs the brackets fitting and putting onto the engine now...

Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project

Day 170

Spent two hours late this afternoon with the grinder tidying up the welds/plates on the inside blanking the heater matrix hole and blower unit hole...

IMG_1961.jpg

Might look a mess, but it took ages to get it 'smooth' so to speak, with the grinder...The whole interiors going to be pained anyway, so it shouldn't stick out like a sore thumb... Also did the outside, then sealed it with black sealant to protect the welds from rust, it will be sanded once dry and the bulkheads getting painted too so wont be seen...

IMG_1966.jpg

Fan blower unit hole also welded/plated, then sealed to protect the welds...

IMG_1968.jpg

Might look a mess, but it isnt seen under the scuttle panel...

Also painted the LAST bits, gearbox mounts, steering rack and the other side of the wishbones...

So long gone are any chances of the heater matrix ever going back in, good riddance :) More soon...

Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project

Good updates again jord. Have you painted every part on this car then? Good idea thought to protect any parts from rusting etc.

Is your shell all 100% rust free?

yeah no rust on the shell itself

what's the story on this heated windscreen?

...or is that another 'wait and see' :D

its tempting, but im holding off on that for now....be reet lol

Stop paint whoring and start the real build action!!! :-D

there is nothing else left to paint engine bay wise....i started putting back together last night lol

update from yesterday:

Day 171

Orignally I was going to have an exhaust made by JP, but I have decided against it for now, as Winston offered me his mongoose exhaust system (2.5" bore, ideal) for cheap....So I snapped it up...

IMG_1985.jpg

Im taking the backbox to JP, and having the tip changed to a 2" straight cut...Also debating removing the center section silencer...

Also picked up a 172 Cat today, from Tooney. Im going to use the section that joins to the manifold upto the cat itself to make a downpipe, which is hopefully going to be sorted this weekend...

IMG_1987.jpg

Started to assemble the subframe again tonight too, last few times ive had it in bits ive always put the wishbones and ARB on before putting it back on the car, as apparently the rear ones are an absolute pain to do on the car...

IMG_1988.jpg

All new bolts...

IMG_1990.jpg

IMG_1995.jpg

Wishbones not attached to the ARB yet as I havent got hold of any plates to sit on top of the wishbones like there should be, so waiting on those before bolting those on...

Also, went to refit the bracket for the dogbone mount onto the subframe, to find it dosent fit anymore....due to the powdercoat being so thick lol :( Thats the only problem with getting things powdercoated i guess...Il have to get sanding I guess....

Earlier in the day I had decided to wash the blue valver, im sure Martin/BRUN will be happy to hear that ;)

IMG_1999.jpg

I had the side exit from the hybrid fitted to the blue valver for the past few weeks, but it kept falling off...and the other night it gave way, had to drag it 10 miles home on the floor, lol....

Removed it to re-fit the scorpian, to find a nice wear mark :p

IMG_1976.jpg

In the bin that goes lol...

More later...
