Mondial 172 Cup OEM+ / Rolling Resto

Had the day at home today so did a bit more with the car, when I was checking it over last Sunday I spotted a little split in the outer CV boot on the passenger side.

I ordered a Febi one from partsinmotion during the week, which turned out to be as much use as tits on a fish, incorrect in every dimension.

So I resorted to a Sealey universal stretch boot from ECP which fits perfectly TBH, obviously I had to drain the 2 month old gearbox oil to fix it, I was planning on putting it back in so I caught it in a clean 3L measuring jug and strained it through a 190 micron paint filter into a new clean bucket

There were no bits of gearbox in the strainer which was nice, but I just couldn't put used oil back in, despite it having only done about 600 miles.

I had 2L left of the 5L bottle of Millers CRX gearbox oil so that went in instead

And I've ordered another litre bottle which should be here Monday/Tuesday so I'll throw that in before I drive the car for it's check over.

After @NorthloopCup made a very realistic suggestion that the damper rod could be bent at cadwell it gave me the fear so I've had that apart today too and thankfully it's perfectly straight.

I've also had a quote from a body shop that comes highly recommended, he's said based on the pictures it'll be £700-1000 to repair the damage and paint the passenger side, or in the region of £3500 for a full respray. Something I'm going to have to have a good think over which way I decide to go.

I've also ordered one of them hot glue dent pulling kits from Amazon which is worth a go for the price.. so we'll see if I can improve the dent(s) myself this weekend.

Oh, and this arrived during the week too...

To be honest the bodywork looks great as is, you’ve done a great job. If you’re still tracking it, I wouldn’t bother getting a body shop. Still cleaner than 90% of 172’s on the road! Glad its minimal.

That's the dilemma, I'll definitely get at least the side painted. I do want to get it on track again but It's 99% a road car and I want it to look nice and be something I can be proud of at a meet/show. I wouldn't want to take it anywhere like that the way it is now

Had the car in for a check over and alignment this morning, front only needed minor adjustment but the rear beam is bent and/or moved over on it's mounts. NSR is toeing out 0.38' and OSR is toeing in 0.19', I was planning on getting the beam blasted and powder coated over winter anyway so I'm not too fussed.

I've just ordered a PMS axle stiffening kit and I've already got some Powerflex black bushes, a full braided hose kit, some stub axle spacers and 1° camber shims ready to go, so once I've managed to buy a spare rear beam I'll get it all built up and swap it over

Picked up this 182 rear beam today, which is a bonus as it's got the thicker/wider stub axles and the additional factory bracing under the spring pans

I've got it all stripped down and bushes out already, hopefully I can 'wfh' on Friday and get it over to the blasters before getting the gussets welded in. I have got a Mig welder at home and can weld to a decent standard but I honestly can't be arsed, I've not used it since I made an engine stand for my last bike build and for what my fabricator charges it's not worth me getting some more gas, another spool of wire and doing it myself.

(I just had to check my camera roll.. it was 2022, time flies 😂)

The Clio has sat outside collecting dust and cobwebs since I had the alignment checked and found out the axle was pointing in the wrong direction, I had a message off the fabricator yesterday to say the rear beam is nearly done, he's just got the shock mounts to do then I need to call over there with my one piece brake hoses so he can tack on some cable tie saddles to secure them to the rear beam

I've also managed to get a decent sized (12x8ft) shed built so my engine crane, engine stand and bicycles etc are now out of the garage, I've bought a new shelving unit too so there's now space to get the car inside

There's a couple of metres space behind the car too, next job will be to build a new workbench along the back wall like I had in the previous house.

I'm going to whip the two scuffed wheels off and get them over to the powder coaters next week, then send the beam and brackets off when I get them back.

Hows he been checking your new beam is straight?

Fairy difficult checking the stub axle mounting faces relative to eachother without a jig, I've got a couple of laser tools for aligning motorcycle sprockets so I can check it when I get it back.. but in reality it's just going to be a case of fitting the beam, getting it aligned and shimming the stub axles as required, which is pretty much what everyone does
