My RS2'd RB van

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Needs the cam timing doing first, and also a rear wheel bearing that Ive not had chance to do since Llandow yet.

Few pics I took when I wandered out to see out she was getting on.

Finishing off by putting bumper back on with a replacement arch liner on the drivers side as it was knackered

Mostly went quite smoothly other than the fact that some numpty had tack welded the old engine top mount on as the captive nuts had spun, so les had to grind it off and then I had to weld in a new section I made up with new captive nuts on it.

Cam timing wasnt worth altering in the end, I took it to Mike at MWM for him to apply his latest timing specs to it with the RS2 but as the dephasor has a load of play in it we werent happy retiming it and there is no point changing the belt/dephasor when the engine isnt going to be in long term anyway.

But I finally mapped it this week with the RS2 on it, engine isnt particularly great TBH, should think its only low 180s from how little fuel it needs compared to some of the 200bhp RS2 ones me and Mike have now done etc, but thats fine to use for now as this one is only temporary anyway as mentioned.

And have also changed the rack bushes as the steering was a little vague, only just finished that this evening so wont have a chance to have the geo done before tomorrow at cadwell, but rack bushes only normally effect steering centreline not actual tracking so it should be ok on track hopefully.

Didnt really get any WIP pictures, other than just this one I grabbed as I was about to let it back down off the jack after I did the rack bushes.

Please excuse the state of the garage, we're just finishing off the small workshop next door to it and got junk piled up everywhere till thats finished!

Nice sized garage.

Thanks mate :)

For a single its a really generous size, its about way longer and about 2/3rds as wide as our other which is a double one (sadly thats not all mine though, the double one I have to share with my dad who lives next door, the double is actually meant to be his but luckily he lets me keep one car in it!)

My single one is *JUST* 2 clios wide, if it was literally touching wing mirrors, and its *JUST* 2 clios long if they were touching bumpers, so basically no chance of ever getting two cars actually in there at once, but it means plenty of room to get right round a car no problem, or rather it will have when I get rid of a lot of the junk thats in there!

Great stuff Chip glad all sorted :) Look forward to a ride tomorrow if possible!

Sure thing mate, feel free to take it for a spin at any point, other than being a little down on power it drives exactly like the old one you drove at spa, so basically its not mega quick, but is quite nicely composed and the delivery of the bit of power it does have is very smooth.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Thanks buddy likewise! Yes I loved the old one at both Spa and Llandow when I drove it :) It'll go well round Cadwell i'm sure

Spa it was a bit out of its depth cause of all the off camber high speed stuff, but yeah I reckon its going to be the ideal car to learn cadwell in as it was great at the ring :)

Chip your tyre rack inspires me ;) Just been doing my first sump gasket on mine today, what a game its been so far. Learn't a lot more about my car and took the opportunity to fit the vibratechnics I'd got sat in the garage. Least I'll know what to expect when we remove the engine from the Ph1 when I finally get a trailer!!

Les's RB look well though

I find its a good place to keep tyres without them getting in the way, we keep most of them in a big storage shed (we got dozens and dozens) but in the garage I keep normally 2 sets of dries, a set of inters and a set of wets, just so that we have them to hand all the time :)

Make sure you dont use too much sealant, Ive seen a few people kill engines by the pump pickup ending up full of excess sealant.

Good you are getting stuck in :)

Thanks :)

I have a real love hate relationship with RB. Sometimes it looks awesome and other times (more so in the flesh) it looks insanely washed out.

Nice work effectively re-shelling the RS2 car into this though, much better base to work on.

TBH Ive never noticed it looking washed out yet, but it is weird how many different shades they come out in different light in pictures, some look like mega pale baby blue and sometimes it looks almost artic, lol.

By the time we sold all the bits we ended up with not needing, like the 182 wheels and interior, the 172 bumpers etc, we've spent far less than we would have on paint if we repainted the tatty 172 shell, and we got a spare engine and box from the RB too (which for now we're still using in the car, then it will become a spare donor lump when it finally dies)

Well I've got some track wheels with Dunlops on and just sorted out the winter tyres for the Smax today as well, they are taking up valuable floor space!! Need to get something sorted quick!!

I found loads of sealant in the pick up pipe. Got a small tube of sealant and cut the nozzle to give me roughly a 1-2mm bead, hopefully that is not too much. Only put it in 4 places as per the manual. Was surprised that I had 22 bolts and not 21 when working through the tightening sequence!!

Good you are getting stuck in :)

I'll give anything a go, its my power station "engineering" background don't you know ;) Only thing that worries me is timing, had an issue with a Mk4 escort many years ago and never done timing since. So when get the Ph1 back here and I'm doing the dephaser & cam belt I might need a bit of guidance/moral support!!

Let me know if you want to borrow the timing tools, ive got a genuine set sat here you can grab if you need them.

Had a good day at Cadwell today, really interesting little circuit with loads of elevation changes and plenty of variety of corners.

Car performed well all day, never missed a beat and other than swapping tyres we didnt touch it all day.

Neither of us were particularly on the pace though so got passed by plenty of people who knew the track better or were trying harder, lol, but still a good day out, although both forgot to grab any pics.

Thanks Chip you are a very kind fella and I most likely will take you up on your kind offer ;) Might just need a chat through the job with you before I set loose on the ph1 engine!!

Two very different cars from the same starting point.

Huge difference in spec and pace, but still both great fun at a track.

That looks great (if somewhat slightly ruined by the grey-primer painted thing behind it...) :p Sounds like a fun day was had at Cadwell. :)

Forgot to get lots of pictures. Sorry I do kind of suck at these update threads.

But dan@sjm popped up to collect some parts I had for him and instead of taking payment from him for them because my shoulder was knackered I had a couple days labour out of him instead as I wasn't able to do anything myself much at the time.

So he swapped the cams over to 438s along with new dephasor etc and then gave me a hand with mapping it for them although it got cut short by a hydraulic fluid leak on the PAS.

definitely goes a bit better now but this is just not a great engine to start with so I should think it's still not over 190bhp even now, it takes around 5 percent less fuelling for example than me/mike/dan were finding we were needing on cars we've mapped on standard management that have just touched 200bhp.

Fine for now though and I intend to build a new engine for it in the future at some point and fit a quaiffe diff at the same time.
Not sure yet if I will stick with 438 at that point or step up to 422s.
Kind of thinking might stick with 438 as Lesley still wants it to be very much still her road car as well as a trackday toy for us as well.

Shoulder finally healed towards the beginning of this week only to be hit by a fever and sickness which I've now ended up on antibiotics for so although I've had all week booked off to work on my mk1 my progress has been so slow I decided to just do a few other jobs on the RB instead and leave the MK1 for next time I can get some time off.

So the other changes me and Lesley have done to the RB this week are:
KW variant 2 front coilovers.
pure top mounts
pure strut brace
Welded some captive nuts on the coilpack mount as it's utter rubbish how ktec do it with nuts and bolts

and I've converted it to EPAS now as well as we had a hydraulic fluid leak and it seemed like a good excuse to do so.

Had a quick run down to dan's as I picked up some wheels for him and while we were there me and him did a bit more to the map now. I'd not say it's perfect still yet as we ran out of time but it's certainly better than what most people end up rolling around on with these cams and will certainly do till i get the new engine sorted, couple tenths of an AFR too rich in a few places but other than that it's fine.
Chalked up 500 miles or so on the trip to dans and back including popping to my mates place to see his new man cave and visit my minis in storage at his.

Bedford on Saturday then Caldwell the weekend after so hopefully will all stay ok for both.

Desperately needs a dehpasor solenoid seal though. I thought I had one in stock and then couldn't find it. So am hoping to get that done before Bedford as I'm off work on Friday.

The only pictures I took. Sorry :(

my mate Colin's awesome new man cave, huge upstairs area for the serious stuff and then some car ports underneath for dailys.

SO jealous of it!!!

his wife was going to hire a huge marquee for their wedding and as it was about 8k to hire just for a weekend he said instead he would build a space for it. Then after the wedding he added garage doors front and back on the 1st floor as that way it could still be useful. what a legend managing to get her to fall for that.
Only took him 2 months start to Finnish including time to cut the wood out of trees he had chopped down, makes all those "grand designs" types on the telly look like poofs when it comes to work rate. Epic skills and proper hard working. Fully plumbed in and wired etc too. Only thing he had help with was lifting the bigger beams and a weeks help from a roofer to do the roof with him.

Nice to see some updates again Chip! It's been a while doesn't it?

hands down for the mancave btw! Don't you need a permit to build something like that?

He's a farmer. So long as it's got a lawnmower in there among the old vws then it's fair game calling it as agricultural use. LOL
