Hello, new to the forum, nice to see a forum still alive for once!

Here's my 172 cup that's been built over the winter to compete in the 2025 hot hatch championship at castle combe 😊

Last year I ran the peculiar mk3 golf, due to waiting for the peppier engine to arrive, the clio has gone from "seat time car" to "out of hand car"

Clio as purchased mid 2024, a cup, partially stripped with a jp cage, essentially standard, ideal for some cheap fun..

In November we headed to castle combe for a trackday in its bought form, this was after the end of the race year, golf's engine was already out, the clio went well, weird misfire issue but ignited the urge to build the car over winter, March 17th we have a test day booked, this was the time goal 🥲

Due to time and budget, most was second hand but the best I could afford at the time

Ast 5100 coilovers
Ktr throttle body kit
182 manifold
& a few more trinkets

Suspension went on, @NorthloopCup hubs and roll centre, asts, pure motorsport spherical and plated phase 1 arms and bump steer kit

Then went on the bodies, it was around this time, the 182 manifold went on, 197 cams were fitted along with some 197 cams, a proven setup that should be reliable 🤞

Lastly, to try and get back to the current form

We acquired the unit, where all the tasks that couldn't be done on the driveway happened!

ccf bonnet and boot, poly carbs bonded in, pms stub axle spacers, all the racing reg bits, fire extinguisher, cut offs etc, pms shifter, catch can.

Suspension setup Friday, testing Monday 🫢🫣

A quick spec/history of the car for those interested..

Originally built and raced abroad, it was then bought and further developed by Will McAteer and most recently Mark Shepherd, predominantly in the Classic VW Cup & pre 93s.

Bodyshell: The bodyshell has been chemically dipped and seam welded. Welded in cage. Fiberglass tailgate and bonnet and front wings. Polycarbonate windows.

Interior: Corbeau Revolution race seat. Red top battery. Racetec gauges and a custom made wiring loom. Lightened dash board.

Engine: 2.0l 16v engine (9a bubble block with KR head) fully blue printed, ARP rod and head bolts,Motorsport baffled and gated sump. Twin 45 Weber carburettors.

Gearbox: 020 close ratio 5 speed gearbox fitted with a Quaife ATB diff and 3.9 final drive. Sachs racing solid paddle clutch and lightweight flywheel.

Suspension: Fully adjustable Gaz gold dampers, Rose jointed top mounts. Ball joint spacers to correct roll centres. Seam welded front subframe and wishbones.

Brakes: AP Pro Race 5000 front calipers with AP304mm discs, mounting bells and brackets, Bias pedal box with remote cylinders and in car adjuster. All lines are Aeroquip.

Other bits: ATL FIA 60 litre fuel cell. Red top fuel pump. All fuel lines and fittings are Aeroquip and run inside the car. Lots of one-off custom-made parts including airbox. Quaife quick rack.

Car is left hand drive and weighs 870kg.

Car will be now using an ABF/bodies/dta s40 pro 😊

Well they are my hubs! Lol! Steering kit/bump steer kit isn’t part of my original kit though mate.

The main area of strength is in the bottom pin anyway, so you’ve got the strongest pair of hubs on the market 👍🏻

Welcome to the forum, great spec and the build (both the mk3 and 172). Although the least relevant upgrade, I love Pro Race 3 alloys. Took me a while to find a set, great looking 5-spoke imo. I live an hour out from Castle Combe and was looking for an excuse to go 👀


How are the track days at Castle Combe? I haven't heard great things about the crowd there but its my nearest track (otherwise its Thruxton).

Come on down, I've done combe, llandow and Pembrey, all good circuits, I live between combe and Thruxton myself

I've never had a issue at combe, I'd avoid action days like the plague but the TDs are well organised and usually a good bunch of people, wouldn't believe everything you hear, see for yourself mate 👌
