Replacing Clio 172 Engine (Project )
After finishing my replica i felt that the only way to go was to fit the real thing, the 2.0ltr from a 172. This led me to purchasing this beauty:

dsc05962-48otb7p5p.webp

Failed conversion with a Clio cup engine which has only covered 16k miles.

After looking at all the things i had to change i decided against the conversion and when this came up for sale:

With the aircon removed now was time to remove water piping and to move the loom + ecu to one side of the bay. Took quite some time due to the mass amount of sensors and electronics.

Good Days work.

Good Work, So your keeping the Silver 172 now instead of your Rep???

looks sweet mate

whats happening witht the other engine (the one from the gold car)

Engine from the gold car (cup 172 engine) is going in the silver one. The engine from the silver one must have slipped a couple of teeth on cam belt as it has bent some valves and put a dent into one of the pistons. Will be selling parts of the silver engine as spares though if anyone is interested :)

where do you people find these 172's with fecked engines? been on the lookout for one for ages :(

good project tho :)

lol :D this one came from ebay actually, problem it was in High Wycombe tho. only 4.5 hours from Co Durham :(

LOL, what do you expect to pay for one with engine damage?

I'm after an early Mk1 or Mk2 like yours... (Its for the wife)

Shame they don't have any down Bells, although he's fecking expensive at the besta times!!

it cost me £2.9k which is pretty much as high as i would go. The rest of the stuff is perfect with full service history etc. The engine so far owes me £150 but soon i will be making money on buying that gold car ;)

Tuesday 29th January : UPDATE
Not much to update on but thought i would add a couple more pics.
a sexy looking inlet manifold, fuel rail guard and engine cover ;)

Time to turn the engine over.......
As we connected the battery up the car started turning over by itself :quiet:
After a few tests it was down to the starter motor (Brand New) sticking staying constant live, this would normally be ok but when the startor motor is hiden behind the manifold it takes abit longer. After an hour or two of fighting the motor was off and the original was fitted. This didnt turn the engine over by itself so we turned the engine over with the key, it turned over a few times and went dead. We thought it would just be the dead battery so we put the battery on charge and packed up for the night.

Sunday 3rd Feb
Time to get it running.......we thought.
Arriving this morning the startor motor was tightened up and everything was connected to the engine including the inlet and coilpack.

Looks good doesnt it :)
DSC06240.webp

The moment of truth came.......would it run?
Hopes were shattered at the turn of a key, the car turned over but not enough to start the engine. Just my luck two dodgy startor motors :X Finished the day with removing it and a new one will be ordered tomorrow.

Updates to come later.

Are you sure its the starter motor mate, seems a bit unlikely after putting a new engine in and wont start and you changed starter motor and still dont start?

Could be something in wiring

yeah im 95% sure. The first motor was sticking and the 2nd one has been on the car for 54k and i think when the cam belt snapped on the other engine the guy who had the car before had been trying to start it too much and turning it over many times and burning out the motor.

/carl

Looking very nice indeed mate, shame about the starter motors. I've ordered a full ph1 172 interior that i should be picking up a week on tuesday so not sure yet if i need any bits and bobs out the gold clio...
