No no, I’m using my good friend who works at Milta.

he said that if you buy a brand new car with a DSG gearbox and have it serviced every 2 years, it will probably last forever. But skip just one of those services and it will break. And seeing as most of the brand new cars are lease/company cars for the first 3-4 years and therefore won’t ever have had the gearbox serviced, they’re all a ticking time bomb.

he told us this when we went to collect the 13,000 mile one owner from new with Full main dealer service history Skoda that had just shat it’s gearbox out and then gave us a beautiful £1,400 bill.

absolute junk. 😂

Every 40k dsg oil change on 6 speeds new 7 speed dsg does not need service
My mk6 90k 2 DSG oil changes bullet proof! current mk 7.5 gti performance 7 speed had from now now on 61k no issues on either makes every other auto seem shite.

With all due respect, I’ll take his word for it seeing as he rebuilds them for a living. And I’ve had 4 done this year alone.

I’m sure there probably are some good ones out there. They made enough of them so you’d like to think a few are still going.

DSG costs definitely scare me a little.

The Touareg has an 8 speed Aisin auto, which is easily as nice to drive as a ZF8, if not better.

The Aisin is a horrifically strong box! You'll struggle to kill that thing off, the transfer box however... The chains in the do decide to slip and flap around like c***s in Katie Prices arse after a few years 😂

Just extend the warranty with VW direct a lot cheaper than you would think

Think I've had 4 cars with DSG boxes, wife has one now, parents have had 3, never had any issues with them.

Mixture of boxes going back to 2003 6 speeders, but they have all been the wet clutch models if that counts for anything.

I’m really surprised at that given that the DSG/S-Tron oil services are 40k miles apart.

No specialist i have spoken with has complained about it as much as you my nude nutted friend.😘

I had this for a couple years, really didn’t gel with it, after a year I really couldn’t wait to hand it back. Replaced it with this, it’s much cheaper younger brother.. absolutely loved it in comparison really didn’t want to hand it back…

Unless you have a tune on the DSG they can be really frustrating at times.

Manual mode is a must around town and then when you get on it a bit more it won't give you downshifts when you want, it's a bit slow to react and it will change up for you even in manual mode.

If you leave it in D all it wants to do is get into the highest gear doing 30mph and then when you need to accelerate it drops down 3 gears and you accelerate like going for an overtake. It wouldn't use the torque of the engine.

Tis not really something I observed when I was scouring through the common problems.
Seems like prop bearings are the usual culprits for noise.

I'm sure it'll be orate. I'd definitely rather replace a transfer box than a gearbox anyways.

DSG = Dog s**t Gearbox. Even when its working they're horrific to drive about in. May as well get my Grandad to do the gears and hes dead.

Anyway, recently compiled a list of cars I've owned (35 now in 12 years of driving, no crashes I may add!) Of that Bunch 11 have been VAGs.

Can’t believe all the hate for the DSG gearboxes. They’re brilliant!

Not sure I could ever go back to a manual for a daily again.

What is it you love the most?

The way they either want to be in 7th or 2nd all the time?

The delay from pressing the throttle to car moving, especially fun when going for a gap in traffic?

Or is it the way they can turn a fast, fun and interesting car into something so dull you almost fall asleep?

Ah wait, I know what it is... its the added service bill!

All of the above.

You sound like you have some real insecurities regarding DSG gearboxes 😂 where have they touched you?

Never got the DSG hate myself either, unless you're expecting it to drive, or are trying to drive it, like a manual.

I guess I'd expect it to drive like either a Manual, or an Auto. Or better than both of those. At least better than one of them!

I'd take a classic torque converter Auto over a DSG any day, if not changing gears was my thang.

  Clio, Golf and Ceed
My old car, Stage 2 Golf R estate. Would beat most things from a traffic light Grand Prix. Owned it for 3 years and upgraded most things on it. Unlike a lot of modified Golfs, I used mine for more then the school run. Got bored of it in the end and after having a K20 Clio fly past me at Cadwell the rest is history.

Still got this TTS.

Was up for sale a while ago, but it was almost due its five year service so decided to wait and get that done, which was done about 2 weeks ago (cambelt, water pump, haldex, DSG all done) so I'll probably put it back up for sale again soon if I can be arsed; I hate buying and selling cars.

Main difference between then and now though is back then I couldn't be without a car because I wouldn't have been able to get to work, but that's no longer an issue.

Everyone has (rightly so) hailed the Mk3 megane as the best bang for buck track car there is and one of the best all rounders there ever was.

For me though, the Cupra has nudged it off the top spot.

I'd say (guessing) the megane would be more fun. Just really like the cupra for some reason. It's not like it's really stunning to look at.

Hmm not so sure. I never drove a mk3 though. The mk2 R26 was capable as hell, but boring. It's that characterless engine.

The TSi unit is a cracker, revs out - unlike the F4Rt

Not driven either so was just guess work.

Either would do me. Just every time I think right life's to short something cones up, lol
