Two techs are a rip off

Wanted a clutch change

£160 for the parts
£49.20 for gearbox oil
And £675 for 9 hours labour.

£895

Im having it done locally.

£85 for a valeo kit
£46 for gearbox oil
£360 for 6 hours

£491

Either two techs are trying to play off the "specialist" title and "genuine parts", or im about to have my car F'd by someone desperate for business

Surely cant be that kind of a choice.

I think it's a bit unreasonable to expect a specialist garage to charge the same labour rates as a local garage. Granted the price for parts may be a bit steep, but that may well be direct from Renault, not necessarily a good excuse, but I don't think they're trying to have your pants down either.
Personally, I'm relatively close to Mick at Diamond, I don't take my 182 to him for every little job that needs doing, my family have used the same garage for years and I'm lucky to have people I properly trust to work on my car, they charge reasonable amounts and they're very honest, but I wouldn't have them do the timing on my 182 for example.

You're paying a premium for specialist marque knowledge that a local garage just won't have, it may not be needed for every job, but they're not rip off merchants.

Two techs are very well regarded.

They probably also factor in that the sub frame captive nuts will spin and they’ll want to clean everything up and inspect. (Clio gearboxes leak a lot!)

Your local garage will just air gun everything off and back on again and if they come up against a common clio issue, they’ll call you up and tell you it will be more money.

That’s the basic difference of a local garage.
fine for a non-car person that just wants a cheap job done, not much cop for a car enthusiast.

I don't understand why you would post a thread up like this, slating a well regarded specialist because you didn't like the price they quoted you, meaning any time someone searches their name, this is what comes up.

I haven’t seen a valeo clutch at that price since about 2014.
Two techs are a good specialist and good guys, spent some time with them when they sponsored a car I used to race. Dick move putting this up imo

£900 for a clutch fitted is expensive, it won't take 9hrs with a ramp either 🤣
