I hate my new rear tyres!!! oh no. What have i done? ive gone and bought a pair of boat-makers that have literally made my car into a boat. There a bridge where you go under to enter a chicane near my house and on the old michelins i could nail the throttle in 2nd and come out the other side drifting nicely while the front wheels scrabble for grip. I took it to the bridge last night and although i couldnt take the usual line through the chicane i came out of the exit on what felt like 2 wheels!!? my brother was in the air and i thought the car was very unstable (funny that).

I want my old tires back :(

The new ones are Goodyear Eagle F1s on a mk.1 172 standard.

I think i may tighten up my hand brake and drive around with it on till theyre worn out!!! what can i do!!? please help! Si

junk em.. and buy some proxes.. or just get some more michelins as you seem to like them

  BMW X5, Exige 260.

they may improve once scrubbed in - some tyres have a compound coating them which once gone shows their true grip

how new are they?

I rather liked the F1s that I had on my MK2 172. They were the predecessor to the current F1s though. Way better than the sh*tty Contis.

i find the contis fantastic, progressive and you can slide the rear a b*****d, totally fluid and not used anything else on the MK2. Didnt need to, kept up with many a car on them, nowt wrong really.

rd tyres dont need scrubbing in! they havea little shine on them which is gone after a few miles. They couldnt afford the lawsuits form tyres that were sh*t fromt he off, they need to work when cold, wet, new, old etc.....

You are better off fitting 4 identical tyres when you do change.

Putting an entirely differnet tyre on one axle is bound to screw things up at least until you get used to them. Even a well worn pair and a fully treaded pair of the same make would have different characteristics.

Thats true, do you have new ones on the back and semi worn ones on the front?

Try swapping them, you might get that twitchy rear your looking for.

As a ex tyre fitter the only coating on road tyres for the general public is dressing! Within the 1st mile the dressing will have worn off .

Tread patterns, water dispersion, wear, pressures etc etc all have a bearing on the handling.

I agree with BenR try swappping them around.

Cheers for the responses guys.

I bought 4 new goodyear eagles and theyve now done about 250+ miles. I used to have michelins on the back (originals) and old goodyear eagles on the front, this was my favourite set up. Perhaps i should increase the tyre pressure a bit? or decrease?

I removed the rear wheel to clean it yesterday and noticed a greasy residue that had been plastered on the inside of the alloy. Its a murky brown and i cant clean it off. Im wondering if theres something leaking there? are they air dampened or oil dampened? maybe my shocks are shot?

cheers, Si

um, most wheel fitters use a white slippy detergent type stuff, that is a b*****d to get off the tyres.

But check your shocks, jack the car and look for play.

LOL.........Its called PING the lube and your right its a sod to get off! Hot water and washing up liquid or a bit of petrol on a cloth will remove it.

oh right, ta very much! i was going to use wonderwheels, but ive found it to be a bit weak. Especially after working valetting cars using industrial eye stinger liquid.

you guys made it up jsut to annoy us customers!

if you think wonderwheels is bad, where i used to work driving and valetting pugs and subarus, they had strong acid, which was basically industrial horrible, do not get it on your hands, (no seriously dont get it on your hands) kinda stuff. I wore plastic glen gloves and it melted those! My fingers even melted once when i came into contact. A long owwwwwww which crescendoed into a ch was promptly observed followed by lots of cold water to dillute! It certainly removes brake dust amongst other things, without even having to scrub!

well, if it melts fingers, it aint good for metal in the long term.....

i prefer baby oil and lots of patience........oh, or is that on a woman?

GirlRacer - as long as you rinse it off straight away i cant see it being too bad. Our drive way has taken a bit of a beating. Ive worked at a TVR garage where they used ultra strong acid and also the subaru place- they both used it on all of their customers cars for expensive valets. The good stuff is very good at removing brake pad dust.
