Getting back on track (see what I did there?) and asking the CS community at large, are there any 'preferred' methods for when it comes to running in a newly built high-compression / forged engine? The plan is to get the car up to Paul at RS Tuning for mapping as soon as possible after Fred's done with it but I'm not sure that the work he'll be doing will constitute a 'running in' period... Due to some changes at home / work I need to get the car up and running asap otherwise I'm going to have to start hiring a car to commute (no public transport links where I'm working and my better half really needs her car back having borrowed it since January! She's an understanding soul bless her!) Yes, I would ask Fred but he's on holiday at the moment and I'm trying to plan ahead a little.

Also, what's the deal regarding MOT's, tax and insurance when the car is having long-term work done? The thing is, these will soon be coming around and it's quite possible that I won't have the Trophy back by then. Cheers!

Could you trailer it to Paul and get him to run it in on the rollers? I've done that before and it takes away some of the risks.

If you're going to run it in yourself then running in high comp is no different really. I'd just get some good fuel like BP Ultimate 102ron in there.

You need to get the piston rings to bed in properly so to start with you need to be doing about 30mph in 5th or there abouts. Give it WOT, lift off, WOT, lift off a few times.

Then the usual 500 miles at 1/3 rpm, then a bit more at 2/3rpm. You need to be careful with this bit though as the map might be miles out. If I was you I'd be much happier maybe doing the first 500 miles taking it easy, then get it to Paul as he can tweak the map to run it in safer.

Run it in on some decent mineral oil, then dump that and get a good fully synthetic in there.

Thanks for the advice - much appreciated. Yeah, it will be trailered up to Paul (I believe Fred may know a man or two who could help there, or I could find some friendly soul with a trailer!)

Cheap ass oil to run in on. We ran chips turbo in on asda's mineral.
I'll also stock up on some cheap-ass oil (might have to be Tesco rather than Asda so as not to upset the missus). Cheers Dan!

I might have to take you up on that mate. Things are a-changing quicker than anticipated! Obviously the Vee would be treated like a Princess, too! When's it available from and how much?!?!? :D

Gearbox is done, Zoltan is collecting it tomorrow! The diff needed loads of shimming apparently, the stock diffs are machined perfectly apparently, the quaife however was and i'll quote "miles out"

I swear this car is cursed, everything i've ordered or Andy has ordered has had an issue haha! BUT we have everything now, so when i return we can get it finished!

I've fitted a few quaife diffs to Toyota gear boxs and there always miles out its a pain in the ass

Seriously? Just turn up at BTM Towers and collect the keys?! I can do that... might have to do it in the next day or two though. :D Don't worry, it will be V-Power Nitro-whatever all the way and it will be looked after. :)

Fantastic news mate - cheers! I thought it would be pretty much good to go (with maybe a very, very small amount of work here or there)... sounds like it was far from perfect :S

Tell me about it, mate! Still - at least all the bad shizzle is happening now and out of the way. It's taking longer than hoped (and I know you are sick of the sight of it) but I appreciate it's been a pain right from the off in terms of parts shortage, lengthy deliveries, new forged conrods being significantly different weights, unexpected gearbox damage, etc, etc. LOL! Don't get me wrong mate, I'm certainly not having a go and appreciate your efforts; it's just that I'm struggling now without having transport and lack of public transport options for work. :)

I'd sorn it if it's off the road mate... Id guess Freds insurance will cover the car. I've got an audi tt you can borrow if I don't sell it in the meantime. . Or a trophy. . You break them you buy them ;)

Fred beat me to it. . Lend mine I'll borrow the VEE:)

LOL! Thanks for the offer mate... very kind. But by the time I get to you, you'll have sold them on and bought another 17 different cars... :p Joking aside, very much appreciate the offer but I'll see if I can borrow the *****'d out Vee and 'encourage' Fred to pull his finger out (his words, not mine!) As a general rule I don't wreck other peoples' cars. I just have bad luck. :(

The V6 is locked in my garage at home until next thursday night :( the volvo (the L-reg snotter) is at work, you can take that if you REALLY want but its pretty terrible, the diff is hanging out of it, the steering is beyond vauge, drinks oil, drinks petrol, no stereo, half a dashboard and 2 doors that don't work (it stinks of engines/petrol/fags/old socks/dead animals etc) its a bit tired after 300K miles LOL

LMFAO! 300k miles... impressive. If it had a stereo I'd be interested! :p Well, as long as you don't mind me borrowing your V6 I will happily come and collect / borrow it short-term once you are back. And very much appreciated, too. :) In the meantime just get off here and enjoy your holiday time!

are you going to clean it for fred? last time i saw it, it had a 1" thick skin of dust on it..lol

Don't worry. It will be looked after as if it were my own. I'll write more (below) about the experiences I had with it since I picked it up this morning. It's obviously a special car... and I am extremely grateful and appreciative, Fred. My goodness, that noise! :D

LOL! Nah mate, that won't happen. Fred's V6 is awesome (and I already have fallen in love with it) but my Trophy is also more than a bit special for me personally (despite the cr*p I've been through with it!) I might just keep the V6 and ensure Fred gives me my Trophy back first... :quiet:

It's already booked in for 4 sessions. Oops, did I say that out loud? Might even find it's way to Llandow as well... :p

I spent a few hours cleaning it today fella. I was going to clay, polish and wax it but the sun was too hot and I didn't have suitable cover. Still, it got a good wash and came up nicely (pics below).

I feel sorry for the vee, I want to come and detail it.

Despite the stone chips the paintwork is in really good condition and looks great with the gold flake. A bit of Zaino treatment today and it's come up beautifully.

So, let's update things here a bit...

July 2013 - Friday 26th

Firstly, a HUGE thanks to Fred for the loan of his incredible Renaultsport Clio V6. Having had my trophy for 6 months (no fault of his own mind!) I am now struggling without a car and I cannot continue to share my partner's Type-R as she needs it for her own commuting, etc. Also, a change in my own circumstances mean I am finding it more difficult to share a single car with her due to the logistics of it all. Anyways, to cut a long story short I was going to hire a car and that's when Fred generously stepped in and offered me the loan of his V6! I am now in possession of this wonderful car until my Trophy is done (or Fred urgently needs it back!) As said, a huge and massive thanks to Fred. He's a star and I don't care how brown my nose is... this has helped me out massively and I can't express how grateful and appreciative I am. :)

So yeah, what a day (thanks also to my good lady for playing long distance taxi driver and driving me over from Wales). Fred did say, as I picked it up this morning, that I'd either love it or hate it. I think you can probably guess where I stand on that one. It really is a bit special. And I've never been in a car that attracts so much attention. If I'm honest I found it a little unnerving. When I'm in my Trophy, nobody really gives it much attention. Unless it's a fellow Clio enthusiast then most just assume it's a red Clio and that is that. But not so with the Vee. Pretty much everybody was straining to get a look on the drive back to Wales. I also found that, on the motorways and dual carriageways, a lot of cars simply moved out the way to let me by. No, I wasn't speeding either! The only issues I had were with blokes in shirts and ties in German barges that seemed to be annoyed that I was sharing the same bit of tarmac with them. Whilst the urge was great to floor it I simply moved over and let them pass.

I pulled in the services to fill up the fuel and as I was about to leave a Dutch couple in a motorhome struck up a conversation about the car; a nice couple and we spent a few minutes chatting until another car pulled up to use the pump. On the way out the station a posse of 'more mature' bikers let me pass and threw thumbs up. This is totally alien to me, but cool all the same. As I got nearer home I called in Halfords to pick up some quick detailer and microfibre towels and was greeted by two police officers when I returned to the car park. They'd pulled up next to it and were checking it out. No issues, they were just looking so I spent a few minutes chatting with PC Evans and (can't remember his name, Huw I think) about the car and the deal with my Trophy. I bet they regretted asking! LOL! To top it off, I gave it a clean for a few hours this afternoon and the neighbours were asking about it as well as the locals who pass by the house. This was weird as I don't know them (apart from my neighbours) and normally just keep myself to myself. So yeah, the car definitely has a certain air of celebrity and presence about it! :)

In terms of the drive, it drives real nice. And the sound is immense; it just burbles and growls as you go about your business. The gearbox is sublime as well... so smooth. I love it. :)

Anyways, here are a few pics after today's clean. Sorry they are driveway shots but I haven't had time to take it anywhere yet!
