    Clio Road tax

It's super weird how hydrogen has been slow in the takeup. You essentially could just use electrolysis on water to get Hydrogen and Oxygen, there was that Richard Hammond show on Amazon Prime that literally did this. I mean, given there's an intent somewhere to convert gas to hydrogen for house...

    Clio Road tax

Europe is the only place in the world that sniffed something and decided that diesels were the future. They certainly produce less CO2 than petrol, and so they single handedly decided that was the factor. Bought my dad a Nissan Note 10 years ago, with those Renault 1.5 diesels in them. Because...

    Engine block weight?

Hi there! As I'm currently in the throes of breaking my wife's Clio, I was wondering about the engine. Given its 200k miles, and it failing on emissions, there's as much a chance the engine is knackered as it might be something as stupid as a sensor. Because of the huge mileage, I can't...

    Cambelt change, just venting

Welp, that didn't help. Despite as much heat as I would dare, attempts at getting grips on the stud only made it round up even more to the point it now slips off. Stupid POS, off to the scrap yard.

    Cambelt change, just venting

Iknowright. Looks like after some initial swotting that it can be removed. Guess the weekend will be spent with a blowtorch to hopefully loosen the threadlock and pliers and hoping for the best. Sigh.

    Cambelt change, just venting

Hi all, Halfway through a cambelt swap on the wife's Clio 172, ran out of brake cleaner, so had to take a short break from it. After two weeks before stuff arrived, got around to cleaning the engine down and began reassembly of the cambelt. Tightening up the exhaust nut (100Nm, then was...

    Door Hinge Retaining Clip?

Hi all, Have just replaced a door on a Clio 172. However, one of the tiny circlips/retaining clips that the hinge pins use has decided to get blown away in a gust of wind! It's camouflaged itself on the driveway so I've no idea where it is now! Anyone have the part number or know a quick...

Car not starting, blinking red engine stop light?

Well, I took the cover off the ECU bracket, gave the connector at the top a wiggle, then the red engine light stopped blinking. Lo and behold, the car fired up. Freak incident, or something I should be wary of in the future? Many thanks for the tips and advice everyone.

Car not starting, blinking red engine stop light?

Ok, can't really get that much of the loom unless I take drastic action, and I'm not there yet. I gave the UCH a few wiggles and taps, and now the immobiliser light is off, but the blinking red engine STOP is still on. It appears to now be cranking but not sparking.

Car not starting, blinking red engine stop light?

Battery has been on charge since yesterday morning, and will be on the charger to keep it topped up. The braided gearbox earth to the body was loose on the gearbox for some reason, tightened that up and now the car is turning for about 2-3 seconds consistently now. This was the same as when I...

Car not starting, blinking red engine stop light?

Getting to the end of my tether with this car. Been out of action for a month and a half because of clutch, suspension and an exhaust (which took almost 3 weeks to sort out), and after a couple hours of test driving and about to let the wife drive it and enjoy it at last, it now refuses to...

    Front shocks, not retracting?

Welp, that pretty much answers that. 172's are oil filled. Thanks!

    Front shocks, not retracting?

Ordered brand new. When I pull them all the way out, they do appear to retract a little, but not rebound to the same extent as the rear shocks when I replaced those.

    Front shocks, not retracting?

Hi all, Ordered front suspension (shocks and springs) for a non-cup 172. Normally, I'd prime a shock by pushing the piston along its stroke a couple of times, letting it naturally return to its original position. The shocks I've received though, stay in whatever position they've been set. I've...

    Airbag seat connectors

Probably just to be annoying. Airbags like ABS are a !!!SAFETY!!! ***RED ALERT*** type thing so it's made to be as completely unfriendly as possible. Then they ironically become fragile and useless as we all know with the airbag lights coming on and such.

    Airbag seat connectors

Yikes, almost a year ago! The Mate n Lok connectors still appear to be holding, with only one incident where the air bag lights came on for 30 minutes, then nothing once we restarted the car. It's total bogus.

    Is the yaw sensor needed?

Don't quote me on this, but I would have thought the yaw sensor was for the ESP, I don't think it was tied to the ABS or anything. Happy to stand corrected.

    Oil leak timing side under?

Buying new seals and intend to get a genuine camshaft timing tool, and am going to take off aux belt and as much of the belt covers as possible to reach the tensioner and attempt to take off the pulleys. Hopefully, once the pulleys off I can see for sure whether I cocked up installing the seals...

    Oil leak timing side under?

I can only assume it is either of the camshaft seals, the ones I've replaced alongside the cambelt and stuff. Either I've cocked it up, or the rocker cover itself is also leaking. I don't think the plastic cambelt lower cover would be showing signs if the crank seal was leaking too. I want to...

    Oil leak timing side under?

Yes it is. Not sure if leaking from above it or being flung from the driveshaft underneath it though. Might not make a difference.

    Oil leak timing side under?

Hi all, Having done the cambelt and loads of other stuff a month or so ago, had a look under the car to have a check up on things, but unfortunately, things look a little grim. I decided to stick some leak detection dye into the engine oil just in case the engine decides to leak somewhere, and...

Changing 172 Xenon's To Standard Headlights

I would have thought so. The Clio we got had a set of headlights in the boot. I believe they are different beam angles for jaunts into Europe, and didn't look like Xenons, so presumably they plugged all in the same place, one for the lights and one for the angle motor?

    Boot storage Bag/holder

Costco do one, folds up when not used. As an addition, are there any storage options in lieu of the spare wheel? We have a 172, and haven't really bothered putting the spare wheel back in, but that leaves a void that at least needs some cover on to stop things creasing up the boot carpet.

    Ceramic pads

I think its supposed to be EBC redstuff that is this ceramic based one, dunno if its available for the clios? Also dunno about them in general, was tempted to try them on whichever car needed them next. Sure they should be sufficient for road use.

Headlight level motor, headlight in situ?

Just took it off, tilted it upwards to dosconnect it. Luckily, the motor housing can be separated, and after some fumbling and spraying of grease, there was a latch on the pcb that had disconnected from the white cog thing. More fumbling to get it back on, but once clicked in place, easy...

Headlight level motor, headlight in situ?

Hi all, Just replaced the headlight washers, so bumper off and on during the rain yesterday, bit miffed but its done, so obviously this morning there's an amazingly loud clicking noise when ignition is on. Sounds like the driver side headlight motor trying to do something and obviously not being...

    172 ABS disable

I haven't done this myself, but I would think the compensator valve sits around the rear axle, and presumably there's a brake line to that which splits to the rear brakes. That's where they were on the Peugeot when I had to sort imbalance (it had two on separate lines). With our car still in...

MOT failure if back seats are removed?

This. They'll probably put an advisory if seat belts are still there, but to be honest, they shouldn't test if the seats aren't there. I had the rear seats removed my Peugeot because it was in between jobs, and there was nothing noted. Presumably if you're stripping it for the track then the...

    Washer bottles

Hi all, With the car in bits, I figured this was a good time to find out why the Clio's washer bottle wasn't really retaining water. It was obviously leaking, but from where? Turns out it was one of the outlets, had a huge split in it. Decided to get a second hand one off eBay. Quick check. Oh...

    Aux tensioner top bolt sheared

Wow, this is a disaster diary. Cambelt is in, seems to be timed correctly, fingers crossed. Knowing my luck it'll blow itself up on first start. Gasket remover didn't do anything, so no choice but to get at it with a scraper and elbow grease. Will get a better one. The gasket remover looks...
