1st step onto the RS ladder

Hey

I'm looking for my first sport to buy and I'm pretty sure it's going to be off a member on here.

The two that stand out for me (For various reasons and distance to travel for me to go view the car) are:

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?550138-PH1-CLIO-172-BLUE-2001(Y)-%A31495

and

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?554355-Immaculate-ph1-172-%A32400

Now I'm not looking for people to Bash the members threads or anything, just which do you think would be most suitable for what I have in mind

The car itself will be kept off road for a year or so and will mainly be taken apart and rebuilt back up. I do intend to do some track time at some point and if the car proves reliable it will become my daily.

So a nice bit of variation, what are peoples opinions ?

blue is quite nice, but then the silver one seems good, considering his not bothered if it goes or not, sort of shows, thats its generally ok, he could said he wants to sell it quick, or wants newer car must go, and all that, im not saying the blue one isnt genuine. but i would personally go and view the silver first, then if you dont like it, go see the blue one as well go view that after if your not happy. thats how i see it lol hope it helps,

Yeah that is true, the blue is not far from me so I might have to go see what doc's it has and stuff, that silver it quite a trip but in that condition it's a good price !

Why would you buy a perfectly working car, and then leave it off the road for a year to take it apart then rebuild it ?!

:S

You pose a good question, my answer would be that I know nothing about sports (Other than what I've read) and if I've taken it apart and put it back together generally I know what is what.

It is a fair point and all I would say is this beats the PS3 and such for a pass time :p (I also like the little details to be right so parts will be changed along the way)

No need to take it all apart, loosen things, brake stuff, lose important things......

RS's aren't Swiss watches, they're girls cars made of cheese and tinfoil. Badly. They break. When something brakes, squeaks, falls off .. find it and fix or replace it. You'll soon know your way round the car with your eyes inside out.

Nothing good will come of it sitting for a month, let alone a 'year or more'...!

What you mean take it apart?

Strip it down to bare bit's, as mentioned above it will be rebuilt with new parts in some occasions. If anybody is wondering there is no logic in this, purely recreational lol (But then that's surely why we all tinker with cars)

Bare bits, eg- engine out?

In all honesty it seems totally pointless, why have it standing for a year? it will devalue over that year, you might aswell wait for that year to pass then buy one?

I just cant honestly see the point ?

Not much will look any different to your 1.4 at a component level.

You're not going to blueprint the engine I'm presuming ? So why not just leave it alone and drive it ?

Buy a car from a scrappy to reduce it to its component parts and attempt to put it together again.

In the 2 years I have had mine, along with my housemates, and Rob's one .. I think there's almost nothing we didn't do as a matter of cause.

Brakes, suspension, wheels, helicoiling spark plug holes, engine mounts, interiors, electrics, lights, immobilisers... these things all got replaced, fixed, fiddled with, swore at, adjusted etc etc.. Not to mention servicing. Oil changes every 6k, do it every 3 if you like getting dirty.

:boring:

The year quote is what i would limit myself too, i doubt id be able to stay out of it for that long :p Think of it more as a project car, I have my non-sport which I will be using day in day out and the engine will likely be staying put if it has no reason to come out. The other stuff I will be renewing though.

Also if you are going to replace things like brakes, suspension mounts etc you have to think with it standing for a year and not moving those parts are just going to degrade and need replaced..

Iv just had a Type R in today that had been standing for 6 months while he was banned, he replaced bushes, brakes etc before it was off the road and has had to have them all replaced again as they have just degraded.

Without commenting on the idea of 'stripping' either car, and giving my opinion on OP, ive also been looking at sports recently. IMO the first car at a glance looks a shed, however... the things that are not to my taste are quite easily replace, such as the wheels, sunstrip, and tints. Bearing in mind the car is up for 1400 quid it could be a bargain. Although the advert doesnt give much details, id go and see the car, id want to know what history it had and give it a test drive if you can. At 1400 quid like i said if it turns out fine it could be a steal, but dont jump in the deep end and buy right out.

The second car looks better to me, IMO it looks like its had a bit more tlc over its time, i could be wrong though i dont know either of the cars history. The advert is also more detailed which makes it appeal to me more. But like i said, go and look at both, drive both compare them with others out there, not necessarily ones your interested in buying, ut others on the market. Theyre both at good prices, and both could be a good deal. If you dont though, i might have a closer look at number 1 ;)

Cheers for the feedback :) Yeah the blue one does have some... interesting features. The alloys, t**t strip and tint's would be going and it need's a lower engine mount. That asides 1250 for it seems decent. The only thing putting me off the silver is the distance to be honest

Have you spoken to any of the member selling the cars, phones them or PM'd them? you'll find out alot more that way, and there's a massive difference in your budget, for the higher end you could be getting a decent phase2, are you only after the phase1? also as already mentioned parts will degrade over time if not used. IMO if you are going to buy a car to do it up buy this one and make a project thread while you do it for all of us to follow, spend the rest of your budget uprating parts etc

Yeah phase 1 mainly mate, the problem I have is if I buy a wrecker and drive it 5 hours home and it dies I'm in trouble lol I did consider making a project thread but to be honest it's very hard to come up with something that's not already been done :p
