Another Mk1 coming out of the woodwork

It was whilst the engine was coming out to do the rear main I was contacted by Beanie offering to sell me his Sadev 6 speed sequential gearbox, so I managed to beg, borrow, steal and do a part ex with my freshly rebuilt Gripper diffed box to get my mitts on the Sadev

Took a fair amount of effort & dicking about to get it all fitted and get a gear indicator display wired in but the next big job was another custom exhaust system but this time in titanium from Flux Fabrication.
A lovely piece of work, all in 2.5 inch with silencers mounted under the boot floor to guarantee ground clearance and keep it quiet enough for track use. It was tested at Bedford & did 85db @4,500 rpm so it's pretty much perfect for any track in the UK

We then had a very successful day testing it at Bedford, the weather was vile in the afternoon but the Michelin Race wets worked miracles & let us just push on as though it were a dry day.
Got a few annoying little niggles with the car to sort out but nothing that stopped the day plus we also had a decent turnout of Mk1's including my old Naples Valver

I suppose I should update this as it has been 3 & a half years 🙈

Last trackday was just before lockdown with a few other Mk1's & Mk2's

Had a premature end to the day with a track rod end somehow managing to strip it's threads & half come out of the hub whilst going round Gerards
Another issue was that the clutch isn't up to the job of flat-shifting into 5th & 6th gears so have to spend some money on a fancy one instead

Started to fit the doors and test fitting an 8j wheel for even wider tyres on the front

20220606_163355.jpg

20230501_141415.jpg

Back into the workshop to rip the engine out and fit a new Sachs Performance Race clutch along with a Mk2 DCi steering rack for less turns lock to lock over the Mk1 manual rack

20220527_190045.jpg

And because the Sadev box is a little bit bigger it's actually impossible to remove & refit from the top so dropping it all on the subframe is required

20220528_170736.jpg

Then I got talked into doing some silly stuff so now going for a complete rewire, new ecu and bigger throttle bodies with fly by wire so that the gearbox can be used properly with flat-shifting and auto throttle blipping for the downshifts

20220615_153943.jpg

Also part of the upgrades is fitting individual coils from an Audi R8 which required some "modification to the cam cover

An issue I encountered was that the new bodies fouled the alternator so after a lot of faffing around because it wasn't possible to lower the alternator anymore than it was, a smaller one was needed.
Thanks to someone else doing the hard work of finding a suitable alternative for a similar issue on an F4R, I've got an alternator from a 1986 Suzuki Swift GTI so this is how the car currently sits as I've done sod all since January thanks to my 172 Cup's engine shitting itself  and the manifold & bodies are with a fabricator to make them fit together

Nice. I've just got another MK1 but going to keep it standard but I love looking at what others have done and the photos. I will have a proper read of this when I'm at work one day.

Bit of an update: Finally got the itb's back

When deciding what to do about what trumpets to use, I found out that the airbox from the bike the bodies came from was quite fancy. It has a motor in it that adjusts the length of the trumpets so I don't need to compromise on trumpet length to suit horsepower or torque.
The downside to this is that I have some "space" issues to resolve 😬

In the effort to resolve the above mentioned space issues, I got my hands on a pov spec bonnet to use for marking up to work out exactly where to cut so it clears the airbox before chopping up the carbon bonnet

I've sent the bonnet away to be fettled with and close up the hole whilst still clearing everything it needs to

Absolute weapon this. Proper job. What power do you think you will have now paddy?

Must be epic when you can flat shift that gearbox also.

KEEP THE UPDATES COMING 👍

Not sure what to expect power wise now tbh 🤷‍♂️
I was hoping to see close to a genuine 250bhp with the bigger itb's and EGT sensors in the exhaust manifold but I've been told that the injectors in the airbox combined with the variable trumpets in it will help gain even more power so it's anyone's guess

Done a bit of cardboard aided design & some gentle massaging with an angle grinder to facilitate the radiator that's going in

Got my hands on the radiator today. It's not finished yet, I just needed it to test my C.A.D skills and mark it up for where the fittings will need to go.
It doesn't fit very well atm so the car requires a bit more massaging with a grinder & hammer and a slight trim of the airbox to get it home

Got the finished radiator back today to start fitting it properly

Minimal bodging needed for the bottom rad hose, just a joiner and a 90 degree hose

393723158_1530920914378984_5549776503386513487_n.jpg

A look at how snug the fit is after getting happy with an angle grinder on the subframe. A job for later will be getting it welded up to put the strength back into where it's been chopped and a plate adding to support the radiator

393508771_1530921017712307_2490505740709599267_n.jpg

Needed something to help direct decent airflow into the airbox with the intake now being at the bottom & pointing at the floor.
A bit of ducting for a Bosch kitchen extractor fan was a close enough match to the size of the intake hole in the airbox

Got something that vaguely resembles something that's similar to how it's done on a standard Valver, a nice simple oil breather from the rocker cover to the airbox

393571175_1530921074378968_8686073098003914311_n.jpg

Bit of bodgefuckery with rape tape to test if my existing fan will actually fit, thankfully it does and doesn't get hit by the clutch fork so just needs a bracket welding to the rad and that's all good

393491862_1530921061045636_4882590037003282392_n.jpg

More bodgineering with rape tape, this time to hold the rad in it's finished position as the subframe needs to have a plate fitted to allow the rad to fit in the weird-ish position it needs to sit

Got the bonnet properly fitted today and it clears everything that it needs to inside the engine bay so I'm happy with the results 😁

Can see where the subframe has been cut to accommodate the radiator so getting that welded back up is next on the list

What bodies/intake are these mate? Toyed around with the idea of variable intake trumpets for a while but decided it would be prohibitively expensive.

The bodies & airbox are from a BMW S1000RR motorbike, the manifold is a normal Jenvey item for a Mk1 Megane & the adaptors to make the bodies fit are custom made.

The airbox is the only thing that has the mechanism for the trumpets in it & it isn't really expensive or difficult to find & you could probably make it fit with a bit of butchery and without having to also use the bike bodies
