Boaby Tapp'd™ 306 GTI-6 Track Project.

  RS6+ & 40d MSport X5
Bought the Pug off JoeyD last Saturday, first impressions were it wasn't as clean as the adverts made out. Price was adjusted accordingly and I drove it 106 miles home from Carlisle and wasn't overly impressed with the performance.

Anyway, had a few discussions about keeping it or selling it and decided to at least do one track day in it and see how we get on.

The car was parked up last Saturday and never turned a wheel till today. Managed to get most of the interior out this morning and we'll tackle the buckets/harnesses tomorrow.

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

I had a Ph3 about 9 years ago, I loved it. Sadly I don't feel the same love for this lol.

Once youve spun it at knockhill you will love it.

Good progress so far.

Whats the spec.

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

hope you do fall in love with it, nothing worse than having a bad feeling about a car that youve just purchased. personally would have a valver or ph1 clio tho.

Spec... Good question! LOL.

Magnex cat back, Koni adjustable dampers and some hopes and dreams.

Believe me, I would've had a Ph1 over this anyday.

Theres three of us and the other 2 weren't convinced. (Poofs)

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

Is it due a cambelt change? I'm sure I read somewhere that the timing might be out and thats what was affecting the performance.

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

That was a suggestion as to why it might be down on power slightly, yeah; I don't actually know if it is out, but from what I've read cam timing seems to affect the performance the most..
Cambelt was last done at a Peugeot specialist, so it would be odd for them to mess it up, surely?

At least it ain't jap. So do you think it's a fair bit down then? Are they as easy to check as the f4r's? Daves cousin had one but was always hard to compare it to the clios cos the gear selector was falling off!

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

I might get Ecosse to do the belt change to be 100% sure!

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

Get them to advance the inlet cam aswell! I was a bit disappoined with mine tbh. Sound awesome though and handle well flat out.

Sure you only thought it was down on power when viewing a vid of mine lol but I'm sure mines just a bit of a freak!

Anyho, glad to see this is still gonna be enjoyed after Joey got all ghey and bought an MX5 lol

Someone mentioned about spinning them on track, this is what happens when it starts spitting with rain and you enter a corner to quick and lift off lol epic fail!

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

Driver ran out of talent IMO.

I'd agree with that and I should know, it was me driving...

Tough cars though, I had a small dent in wing which knocked out and after a total of 8 years ownership, hardly any problems other then general wear and tear.

My old Ph3 GTI-6 was a flying machine, had no end of electrical problems with it though. Corroded front loom.

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

F**king hell, you lot don't mess about!!
Is it still not as quick as you'd hoped even with the interior out?
It hasn't turned a wheel since I got home from Carlisle lol.

This will be sold/scrapped/towed away before you track it.

I'll bet you £1.

Good hussle babs. I think the next time we will be up would be the PFC day in September.

I'll be at that one too Dave, if I don't blow it up lol.

I'll use this next track day as a shakedown day then I'll take it from there.

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

Try have a look at the valves there made of chocolate and can easily bend. Usually accompanied by a tapping noise. I'd of thought a gti6 should still move a bit, but it is still a Peugeot at the end of the day so could be anything. Lol

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

I was gonna buy this when it was for sale but wanted it a fair bit cheaper to pay for belts changing etc - sounds like it may have been a blessing in disguise having my offer turned down.

Hope you get it sorted.

Kev, the engine is silent, actually quite impressive.

Should be ok for valves then. Other power sapping things are timing or exhaust/manifold blockages. Or it could just be slow. Lol

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

Maybe the torque of the r32 makes it feel more powerful. It's always hard to like a car you've stepped down to. I didn't think too much of 106 gti's after I had a 172 cup.

Possibly, I'll see how it goes next month.

Re: My Budget Track Project. (GTI-6 Ph1)

Going to speak to Demon Tweeks tomorrow and get the proper base mount/slider.

Got a fair whack done today, just the seats, harnesses and general tidy up to do.

Cat is goosed but can't get access to a ramp to fit the decat.

Going to get some track orientated stickers made tomorrow.
