Engine Bay progess - sneaky peak (56k sorry!)

  No more clio's for me!
Well i couldn't resist getting some pic's up of my latest addition. I know the engine bay isn't clean and the paint on the mani and fuel rail guard needs tidying up, plus there a strut brace to go in at some point, but its almost there! Got the weekend planned out to sort some of those bits tho! :)

Its another Middo special - The lad's got serious skills - and done a great job on the cover. He said he would surprise me with something and he certainly did! Very impressed with the finish, style and the carbon!

Anyways...theres the pics....

looks really nice! and the carbon looks ace in real life, its just because the pic was taken from the side, its actually inset into the grooves so looks part of the cover. As danny said its a bit of a demo project, the circle was originally going to be candy red, with no carbon but to be honest i didnt like the look of it so sprayed it back to racing blue, and then it looks too boring lol the andromeda looks mint against the racing blue in real life, really nice colour combination!

Patty give us a pm matey ;)

mwha ha ha, you know me, if the paint sticks i'll paint it lol

lol ;)

On a serious note - I'm gonna need to something with my strut brace, as its Red, don't think i'll have time to get it to you and back in time before its fitted on Wednesday. Wish i had thought about it yesterday when i saw ya as i had it with me...doh! So i was thinking of giving a coat of black?? Can you give me a rough guide to spraying, what paint to get, lacquer etc.

Cheers mate. :)

basically the key to the finish is in the preperation, but as its prob smooth already shouldnt be too hard. Rough down the surface with a pretty harsh sandpaper (prob 500 grit) and then move onto a finer (prob bout 800 grit) if the surface is pretty smooth just use one intermediate between the two. when this is done you'll need to prime (i assume its metal so normal primer should be fine) give it a few coats of this, if the surface still looks rough give it another sand. Then spraying, personally i'd spray it satin black, as this wont need laquering (which is a pain in the arse). Same as before a few coats and leave overnight to cure before fitting it. If you had more time i'd say use autopaint.com for your paint supplys, but really halfords is fine, if a little expensive. prob talking 10 quid for your two tins.

i won't be able to hang it anywhere, i surpose if i coat a side at time it should be ok??

thats the beauty with using satin opposed to gloss you wont see a 'ridge' as much. Ideally would need to be hung but if you do one side at a time should be fine.

Nice one Mark...watch this space! lol ;)

Do it Andromeda or Racing blue!! Find yourself a local bodyshop or paint supplier on yell.com, give them your paint code and they'll mix while you wait. Will look sweet.

You could get it on some bricks or something high enough for you to get all the way round. between two pieces of something. Mind you, you'd have the ends (where it attatches to strut top) to turn it over anyway wouldn't you? As Middo says. Prep is the key.

i offered to do it andromeda, but hes ghey ;) one for the future maybe lol. If your feeling brave danny you can get andromeda from halfrauds, although it costs 25 quid a tin and if you havent done much spraying before it aint the nicest paint to use. That goes over a black base coat and will need laquering. laquering is ok, basically you'll need to put a few fine coats on, and one reasonably thick coat on to get your shine and smooth finish. However only put the thick coat of laquer on on a warm day or by an artificial heat source of some sort or it'll go cloudy.

^ Not too hot though or it goes dusty, almost as if it dries before hitting the surface. I found this out doing my side strips. :( Warm the laquer can first and it'll be sound.

lol...andromeda would be nice! Not sure my skills stretch to that!!

Unfortunately its a bit rushed for wednesday next week, if you lived closer i would have popped it round. ;)

Not to worry through, i'm down halfrauds at lunch so i'll see what paint grabs me. lol :)

whats the racing blue paint code?? any know. had a look in halfords 2day and i couldnt fined a tin. would this mean i'll need to have it mixed, how long does that take??

  Chocolate Bar™
it has to be mixed. paint code is J45. i order all my paint off mark @ auto-paint.co.uk and have no complaints.
