Odyssey ph1 172 pure track car. No tax discs here........

Been flat out since I was home from work at half 2 but visually not a lot has changed....

Got a spot weld drill bit whilst at work today so I could crack on and get rid of all unnecessary brackets. PITMFA I offically hate the job, although once done I then could hole saw abit more and swage where I could (thanks to Lewis kindly lending me his swager:)

Totally weight loss tonight from all holes drilled and brackets removed = 4.6kgs

I still have other brackets to cut off and more holes to cut/swage with different size tank cutters but have quite simply run out of time as tomorrow the car goes away to have the cage and a few other bits done.:D

Will get a couple of half decent pics in the daylight tomorrow once all loaded up. In the meantime.....here is what I have..

I can indeed although it is nearly fooked:( £7 and I would expect it to last a decent while but welds are hard, it still works but takes ages and you have to push very very hard. Can post it tomorrow if you want though?

I will also get a smaller swager soon so I can do the doors and a few other bits on the car once its back. You can borrow that after too if you like

Right:D

The car is now in the hands of Ashley at A S Heritage to have the roll cage and a few other bits done. Very excited to say the least and will be dropping by to get some progress pics next week.

It now gives me a chance to crack on with getting the doors and drilling/swaging more holes:D and the exhaust to modify. Also I now have a TIG welder so will be seeing what I can do with that.

Here are a couple of appalling photos of where it is at now. I didn't realise when I took them that they were completely out of focus, sorry

Loving all the holes inside, looks proper swiss cheesed. What sort of final weight are you aiming at with the car?

Once I get the shell back I will cut some more. Ran out of time doing the others.

I am seriously contemplating removing the abs and pas. This is not "to save weight" primarily but to simplify the car and it's wiring loom. The by product if you like for me will be a bit of extra weight saved.

With that in mind I am hoping to be at most, mid 800kgs.

I will have a rough idea of the overall weight in the next couple of weeks once I have it back and spray it. The place where I will be spraying it has a weigh bridge so will weigh the rolling shell and then weigh the engine and various other bits that are due to go back on, add it together which should give me a ball park figure.

If I was you I'd remove them for the same reasons tbh.

I know there are very mixed opinions about the whole pas removal, but this is only going to be used on track at speed for around 20 min sessions, it is going to be very light and my arms aren't the size of pipe cleaners so I'm sure it would be fine:p

ABS for me to remove is easy as I already have all the pipe, tools and nipples/ends

So now the shell has gone for a little while, it gives me a chance to start a few other jobs.

Not much to update tonight but have made a start with the exhaust. For those who don't know, it is an original Orbisoud cup racer exhaust that has seen a few too many curbs. I am going to straighten it all out, replace pipe where needed, make it longer at the front to join straight on the 182 manifold, fab a new silencer bracket and rebuild the silencer to be repackable joined with rivets one end.

If I wanted to be really fussy I could make it mint by replacing the entire silencer body but I would rather it be functional over mint and as it has already hit high curbs on a circuit I'm sure it will again.

Any updates on this??

Not yet I'm afraid.

The shell is still away having the cage done. It will be a while as I have told the chap there is no rush so do it as and when.

Also last weekend I was in Germany at the Nurburgring and this week coming will be doing a track day in Wales. Once I am back and all sorted I will crack on with the exhaust and doors.

You have alot of money to throw at this, lets hope it gets alot of use! What engine spec you going with as ive not gone through the whole thread. I assume you're going to have a mid silencer as that backbox with a 182 manifold is going to be insanely loud for trackday limits!

I don't have a budget as such but want things done properly on it so it will be the best spec that I can afford at the time.

The engine that will go in this year will just be a standard 172 unit albeit with a fresh cambelt on. I also have another engine which I will be building up with a forged bottom end and Rotrex supercharger for next year. This will run around 260bhp and with slicks on. I will then look at putting a Gripper plate LSD in sometime.

The exhaust will only have one silencer for the time being. I am in the process of modifying and fabricating the silencer so it becomes repackable. I then hope to run some very absorbent silencer wool that should hopefully deaden the sound a little more than a standard silencer. If this turns out to be too loud then another silencer will go in mid way.

Wow Rhys, remember discussing this with you briefly at Llandow, read the whole thread and it sounds like its going to be a great car once complete, love it so far.

Thanks Ben:)

The shell went off ages ago to have the cage put in but the chap that is doing it for me has only just started today so starting to get very excited once again!

More updates soon......I hope

An cool. I've just bought a cage for mine lol only the rear though as I use the car daily, pretty much bought it just because I like the look of it and as an expensive rear strut brace haha.

A poor excuse of an update....

The chap doing my cage has had plenty of other things to do before my car so has just started it this week.

Unfortunately he rang me yesterday saying that where he was going to be welding around the main hoop feet there would be far to much heat going through to the petrol tank.....which happened to be half full!
So today after work I went up to his workshop and removed the fuel tank to save me abit of labour costs. It wasn't too bad to remove tbf, took a couple of hours but I will say now that it is not going back in! I will run a custom ally tank with internal collector and foam filled. More money...

Speaking of more money..
I have bought some Jenvey ITB's :) These should arrive early next week. A new genuine cambelt kit arrived today too:) So the engine spec for now will hopefully run close to 200bhp then possibly next year forge the bottom end of my spare engine and slap a rotrex on:D

Pants picture from today's blood sweat and tears....

Any progress is good progress. Who's putting the cage in for you?
A chap just down the road from me called Ashley Sermon who is Automotive Sporting Heritage. He will also do me a fuel tank and rad at a later stage. Couldn't recommend him enough
