TomoTek - 182 Track Build here we come!...

Now I'm finally up to date on the build I can share some pics from its first outing!, all this work happened mid august in anticipation for a shakedown we'd booked at Blyton Park.

All very last minute, so a setup was thrown at the car, toes, cambers, start tyre pressures, ride heights etc.

@Jenbo and I headed up to Blyton for a day that had been booked with quite a few of our friends. We planned on using the day to check over the car, ensure everything was working as it should. We needed to check the brakes, setup the bias adjustor, bed in the brakes, ensure the rad cooling was sufficient, bolt check everything, bed in the new wheels and studs etc.

We chose Blyton as it's local to our friends, nice chilled environment, good track and not much to hit if something goes wrong.

I strapped the car on the trailer and headed up!, I was treated by some pretty nice weather!.

Family wagon got us all up there nice and easy

Setup the awning and got unpacked

All ready to go to run under its own power!.. big moment!.. Ben let me do the honours of taking it for its first few laps.

Good first test for the car. Quick straight out the box!, no mechanical problems, engine pulled well, cooling worked perfectly.. only real thing we had to do was drop the tyre pressures and tighten up a slightly loose front damper top mount.. all in all a great first drive in the car!.. we weren't really timing but we got clocked doing low 1:17s on the Outer circuit

We then packed up and got the car home. Ben and I had a bit of a de brief and noted down all our thoughts for the day to help us improve the car going forward.. Now we were just eager to set it up properly and go back out again for a first proper track day!.

Bet that was a great feeling getting it out on track and driving it as you've designed it. Well done !!
Any onboard footage ?

Yeah it was really good thanks!, a little over shadowed by the stress of getting it running and making it to the shakedown on time.. glad we set that deadline though as it really pushed me to get it all finished!

It was very odd, Ben and I had talked about the day we'd finally get to drive the car quite a lot, and then it finally came!

The seat, steering wheel, gearshift, and pedal positions all just feel so natural too which was reassuring and filled me with confidence

We got some onboard footage however I hadn't changed the go pro settings to in car so the lighting is terrible and outside is too bright to see anything.. we did however get some footage from our seconding outing so I'll put something up soon [emoji1360]

Finally onto my last update before I'm fully up to date with where we're at with the build.

Ben and I decided we needed to get back out in the car as soon as possible! (after all we'd been waiting a few years to drive it so just wanted to use the damn thing!)

We booked onto our first proper track day with Javelin trackdays on the 17th September. We decided to go back to Blyton and do the Outer circuit again as we wanted to setup the car properly and then get a proper back to back and see where the car was performance wise. (Last time out we were managing mid 1:17s by the end of the day)

I set about properly setting the cambers, toes, ride heights and damper settings etc to our desired baseline.

Then we were off back to Blyton!!

This time our best mates, @chrispyclio and @ACS_Motorsport came along to help out and support.

Ant got some great pics of the car in the paddock, so thanks mate:

It was a mixed day weather wise. It started out very foggy in the morning, but then cleared up to get about 1hr of dry running. Then the clouds came over and the sky darkened and we were greeted by some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen!

I managed to get a few good laps in, in the dry during the morning session, The traffic was terrible though, there was about 15 MX5's at the track so nearly every lap was compromised at some point trying to get past one of them.

The event photographer managed to get a few great snaps, of me pushing hard into the chicane after the back straight...

We also ran the RaceChrono app on my phone which is a great free app on android. One of the benefits is that it takes your split times from a session and gives you an optimal lap. Great for track days where you never really get chance to get a clean lap. We were really happy with the pace of the car though, It felt like it was on rails.

I was more than happy with a 1:15.6 optimal lap.. A bit more setup work and getting the tyres up to temp and I think we would have been sub 1:15 easily. (shame it rained in the afternoon)

37521480960_009a0df400_b.jpg

You also get some great speed traces which you can overlay to compare laps etc.

Strapping @Jenbo in ready for a go in the wet afternoon session.

Looking at home in the wet conditions!

23926983328_95621ef008_b.jpg

Really happy with how the day went and really proud of the car and how it performed in mixed conditions.
Ben and I were really comfortable in the car and were able to push and find the limit quickly.

Now to plan for 2018, more trackdays please!.. test test test

I love how understated the car looks from outside but, when you see inside, you see how much work there is in it. It needs panels on the doors though :p

Cheers.. haha yeah @Jenbo keeps telling me to sort the door cards out [emoji23] .. top of the to do list

And yeah I prefer the understated look, everything that goes on the car has to have a purpose

Cheers mate, it seems like it's quick, just need to get to some more tracks and get some more laps under our belts.. see how the lap times compare to other similar clios out there

That interior is absolutely mint! What a great looking 182!

Thanks James, appreciate it

Looks great. Is the engine and box still standard? The seating position and gear lever location look brilliant.

Cheers!.. really love the position too, feel very comfortable in the car, definitely worth the effort

yeah engine and box internals are standard.. all I've done is fit a new dephaser (and re time cams), belts, plugs, filter and fluids etc

Then the cold air feed to the inlet

It's 0400 local, just read this entire thread. I know what I'm dreaming about tonight. Seriously a very well executed build, big fan of the doing it once/future proofing mentality. Hats off to the both of you!

Thanks! yeah same, i'm sure i'll see a lot more people next year, feel free to pop over and look around the car. We plan on doing about 7 trackdays throughout next year so i'll throw the venues / dates up when we sort it all out.

Good to see it being used! Well done.

I was sad too when it started raining and getting dirty haha!... gave it a wash as soon as I got it home though!..

Its back up on axle stands now with all the front end body work off. Wheel arches and engine all clean again

It does look well. Needs some vinyl for full-on race car points now. Are there pictures on here somewhere of the sill stand points being fitted? I assume that's what the holes in the skirts are for?

Yeah I know haha, I'm working on a livery design too, so hope to get that on over winter!.. can't wait to see it in full race car spec [emoji1377]

Sill stand tubes being fitted are on:

still need to fabricate the stands actually

Onboard video up.

Chasing another Clio down on the first lap [emoji594][emoji594]

Never really got a clean lap when the camera was recording, best of the bunch on the video.. (didn't help that we kept forgetting to turn it on)

Ignore the passenger intercom cable swinging around too haha
What's dangling around in the passenger foot rest area ? Looks like the UCH?

It's been an amazing thread to read so far, I can't imagine how happy you are to finally have the chance to give it a shakedown and drive it in anger! Can't wait to see how this goes.
