182 off the road for 6 months

Right, I'm off to the states for 6 months from the 30th June. Will the 182 be ok left standing un-garaged, on the drive, un-started during this time, with the battery disconnected, or should I leave a key with my psycho ex to either start it, or take it for a little drive once a week? (I am talking about the engine btw).
 
hey im at the Wirral... i'll kindly rag the s**t out of ... i mean... gently start it and warm the oil and bearings for you

I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge than I will explain, but i know it can be particularily unkind to bearings, boots, followers etc
 
the engine should be ok sitting, as i had a 205 sitting outside for about 3 months before i passed my test, but you might find your tyres will have perished from constantly standing. plus, knowing renault, the paint will be knackered from all the 6 month old bird crap on it
 
wouldnt it be ok but best to change all the oils etc , all the s**t i presume would have well an truly settled in 6 months

I'd be worried about leaving a 182 ungaraged for 6 months for more reasons than battery dying/ things going stale. Will appeal to thiefs for sure?
 
if someone is going to go to the effort of nicking a car they could at least pick something a bit more desireable than a clio.
 
think i'll leave the spare key with the psycho to start her weekly, gonna make sure i remove the steering wheel though, lol
 
i'd leave it with someone mate otherwise things like seals and gaskets may perish and dry up. god know's i change enough gaskets and seals on planes every month. also bearings may seize if incorrectly lubricated!! and not too sure but unleaded fuel can go kind of jellyish over a long period of time so might clog ure fuel system. only needs to be started and driven for 5 mins a week really!!:P

Be fine stood for 6 months, starting it and not getting up to temp will be worse than leaving it stood. Only thing I would worry about would be flat spotting the tyres.

The fuel may go off so dont leave huge amounts in it.

This is what I am worrying about. The psycho ex and her bro starting it up and revving the living daylights out of it. So if i put the old 17's on, and leave it with only a few litres of fuel, it should be ok. Then when I return in January, change back to the 16's, flush the fuel system, and refill with new gearbox & engine oil, it should be alright!?

Oil and filter change on return and you should be fine. I have read about putting a drop of oil down the plug holes if it has been stood for along time aswell.
 
Personaly I'd get someone I trust to take it for a drive once a week (I can look after it if you want)

otherwsie jack it up stick some long term oil in it up the tyre presures check the coolent ok and lock it without a bettery with the alarm off with a demositeriser in the garegae to stop mositure even better get some mouse traps or stuff to keep them away else you'll find them going for a sleep in there.

Best thing is always to get it driven thoug.
 
could you not borrow an old persons garage for around 100 quid.... then put it on axel stands... to save your tires.... leave a very small amount of fuel in it... if it was garaged it would be fine no problem... i know of old jags that have sat in overgrown brush for years and have started and run just fine..
 
You may get flat spots on the tyres with it being in the same position for 6 months, you can get a special block you place under each wheel which distributes the weight. It'll smell a bit musty inside without getting warm much in wet or cold conditions.

If you are worried about someone driving it off remove the battery or anything else that'll make it awkward for a theif to start, on an old car for example, I'd remove the rotor arm but on a 182 anything that will immobilise it.

I doubt the clutch, engine, box, brakes or anything else will seize on a modern car like a clio in 6 months tbh. You'd be suprised but some cars sit in compounds for months before they are taken in by a dealership when new.
The disks may get a little rusty so check it through before driving it again and take it very easy for the first few miles.

When you get back maybe take it in for a minor service.

My cortina was layed up for 2 years 6 months in all weathers before I bought it, a new bettery was fitted and it passed an mot the next day. Cars are more resilliant than people give them credit for. Infact I've driven cars with no real probs in my last job that you could barely see through the windows of they are covered in green muck from being stood for so long under trees.

My Fiesta RS Turbo and my brothers S1 Escort RS Turbo are only used for summer and just get started every month(in winter) and driven round the block just to get the steering/suspention/brakes working.
I wouldnt leave it for 6 months without starting/driving it,and i would also get a car cover for it so all the birds dont crap on it and it doesnt get tree sap all over it(if theres trees near it).

They also have a tendency to get moist and mouldy inside if left closed for several moths.

I'd be in the camp of leaving someone sane to look after it.
 
hide it in the sea.. will keep it clean, ex cant get near it and birds cant poo on it :)
