On the battery negative the cable comes off to the battery tray but what earth's the battery tray ? Is it the bolts which hold the tray on or actually the tray itself ?
I have a earthing issue after fitting a gearbox to the 172.

Knew the jacking point was bad but after poking about managed to push through this bit of the underside.
Question is: is this most likely to have rusted due to the jacking point or is there any water drainage points around here ?
My Clio 172 has been losing oil over a long period of time after a rebuild using 2nd hand pistons a few years ago, no noticeable smoke and not dropping oil out from the engine.
Got my mate to do a leak down test and here are the results:
Cylinder 1 - 152 psi 3% loss
Cylinder 2 - 149 psi 2%...
What does a forged supercharged combo run like as a daily?
Is it all rough idling, dodgy cold starts and heavy clutch ?
Reason I'm asking is I feel a freshly built lump has a better chance if longevity where as throwing boost at my standard high miler lump is just asking for problems.

I bought a 172 bottom end from ebay a while back but no idea if its a ph1 or ph2.
With there being two different cambelt kits available, the difference being i believe just the idler on the BE, if you fit the wrong kit, will be be apparent straight away ?
Also why do the idlers differ from...
Does anyone know if the ph1 throttle body has been discontinued by Renault?
Had one on order from the local dealers for 3 months now. They've chased it up with Renault direct to no avail.
Heard they can be a bit prone to rusting but would never have thought this would happen :eek: - 100 yards further up the road and i would have been 70mph on a dual carriageway. To be fair they have been on the car a good few years.
Would it be stupid not to uprate the valves when doing a rebuild or is uprated only really required for ragging it on the track?
I don't want to lash out over 300 notes if not really required :)
In terms of the engineering, how do you achieve the high compression? Is it a combination of decking the block, thinner head gasket and a skim of the head? or just a heavy decking of the block?
Got my block decked / bored and honed etc but the compression ratio measurements are coming in well...
The front brackets which hold the bumper on (ph1 172): Does anyone know if you can buy these?. Also are they common place on all ph1 Clio's or just exclusive to 172's ?
Noticed over the last couple of weeks when turning the ignition on in the ph1 there is a 1 second delay in starting until it fires up, basically a slow cranking blip.
As i suspected would end up happening eventually it now won't start until repeat trying / leaving it and trying again...

When you close the door on a Clio the interior light stays on for a few seconds before fading out.
Is there anyway you can adjust the time it takes to turn off or even better have a switched based ''door closed light off'' system?
When i turn the key the idle drops straight to about 400 rpm and then basically stalls.
Doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold although when the engine is hot its usually more intermittent. Car drivers 100% fine when warm although when cold rev counter needle plummets between gear changes...
When i turn the ignition from cold the car tries to stall iself, idles at 500 / 400 rpm then often cuts out.
Revs also nose dive between gear changes till after a few minutes driving.
Once the car is warmed up it starts, idles and drives fine.
Its like it needs the choke pulled out on...
What would the effect be of having a exhaust cam with less duration and lift than its mating inlet cam? - turbo application
Im basically building a 2 litre turbo engine (non Renault) - The donor engine has high lift cams as standard. The 1.8 cams from the same model are exactly the same fit...
Been attempting to do the lower ball joint. Turned the wheel to gain access to the bolts and the drive shaft popped out. After trying to get it back in iv now got split CV gates and box oil everywhere :mad:
My question is, got the drive shaft back in but cant seem to line up the two lower ball...

Do you use the stock Renault head gasket when using over-sized (84mm) pistons?
Just wondering if the piston bore size on the Renault HG would be too small? :o

Whats the best way to remove rust from inside a engine which has been stood a while?
The piston bores are fine but the oil and cooling ways are rusty.
Would patio / cement acid cleaner be up to the job? or is their anything better to use?

The numbers i have are; 063410 Z F4...
Can you re-use cambelt idler pulley torx bolts and the tensioner spring or is it advisable to replace with new?
The kit i got (Ford) did not include bolts and spring for the idler pulleys.
