172 Cup track toy build

Hi, thought I'd start a thread to track what will be pretty slow progress (sorry) on my new toy! My Mrs and I are into Evos, she has a 5 and I have a 500hp ten. I've put so much into mine it's got to the stage where I'm desperate to track it, but can't bring myself to do it, evos are constant expensive hassle.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided I needed to actually buy rather than talk about a track car to abuse, clio 172 was the only real choice although I've not had a fwd car for some years. Following a wanted ad on a local forum, same day I bought a 2002 172 Cup, 77k miles, mechanically great, although I did take a risk on the rattle from the engine being a sick dephaser, new timing/aux and dephaser kit in a box in the boot was thrown in with the deal. The body is pretty rough, hardly a panel without a ding or scrape, even the roof has a ding, just unloved, perfect to be abused :)
It's pretty standard apart from a B&M short shift, Eiback sportlines, CDA induction kit and an unknown brand cat back.

1st job was to book it into Ai Autosport to have the dephaser and full health check/service done. In the meantime I sourced a brand new bonnet from a breakers to replace the badly dented and rusty original. I then got a NSF wing from Renparts.

I had the common interior filling with water issue after a heavy shower, thanks to a quick search on here I found two grommets on the passenger side bulkhead not in properly and one of the scuttle drains blocked with crud.
On stripping the interior to remove and dry/clean the carpets, found this mess under the drivers seat, who leaves this!?

Wiring sorted and secured, Dephaser and and service done, different car, quiet engine, goes really well too, loving the clio so far :)

It's surprising how many ex/current Evo owners there are that now own a Clio sport.

All cars looks great, what have you got planned for the 172?

They are the perfect track toy, cheap parts compared to an Evo, surprisingly good to drive too, I'm really happy with my 1st French hatch :)

I plan on building to a budget, nothing too fancy
new cup dampers all round
new front wishbones
dump the sportlines for cooksports as I'm a tart and want slightly lower at the front
rear arb
pure top mounts
various power flex bushes (dog bone is currently shot)
engine/box mounts
brakes from George
1/2 cage
couple of buckets on sliders with harnesses
smaller steering wheel and boss
decat, maybe change the exhaust
15" 2118s
lots of gaudy white on blue colour coding lmao

:)

More random progress :)

test fitted aerocatches, never done this before and it went pretty well I think for my 1st attempt!

When I had the bumper off, both headlamps were missing mounting lugs and I noticed they weren't genuine ones anyway. £40 to a breaker and I got two Hella ones, really need to sand and buff them though.

Putting 15" wheels on and stripping it completely out was 2 of the best things I did too mine. Made a huge difference.

Cant wait to see more progress of yours!

I'm sticking with the 16s and ordinary tyres for now just to get it on track, but plan on 15s and 888s, undecided between 2118s or pro race 1.2, too many lovely cars on here giving me ideas

Hi mate, just read your thread. I am doing the same to my clio, yet keeping it as a road car. So wondering what seats your going for?

I was a little unsure myself, however I believe it's helped the handling on mine.

For an extra ~£100 more I'd say it's worth it!

Few more jobs done on a sunny Saturday

Paint correction and RS badge from the GB, yes it's a track car but I like things to look nice lol, just needs some wax to finish
