All you need now is a 'Renault Heritage museum' sign for your garage and charge an admission fee. I'd pay it!!

Its been called the Renault rescue centre in the past off my mates due to the amount of broken projects in there at one point haha.

kangoo was awesome man, shame to see its gone, cheers for the pax laps at blyton (y) really looking forward to the extra van updates, will be epic

Glad you enjoyed the pax laps mate..the kangoo was pretty epic, and deep down i do regret selling it as it was so much fun, especially revving the knackers off it and getting it on 2 wheels off the kerbs on track. I do hope the Extra is as good as i remember it, as i have absolutely went all in this time and plowed a load of money in.

In other news, had my stack dash fired up. Its as good as i expected it to be, absolute quality product. Cant wait to get it fitted.

Its been a while since last update, but things have been ticking over nicely in the background.

Blue megane was booked in for mapping last Sat at Efi Parts in Runcorn.

Good clean up on Fri afternoon as not been washed for ages, typically pissed down all day Sat. Brimmed with Tesco 99 and sat waiting for my mate to come as we were both booked in for mapping on the pm.
20191019_101119.jpg

Steady drive down off boost on the way to Efi netted 32mpg which is a first on the 630cc injectors lol, used to low-mid 20s!

Let my mate go for mapping first as he needed to be back early, so sat about drinking coffee and talking about the old days of the R5gtt's, and looking at Chris's f4r R5, its a work of art. Seen this develop over the last 15 years or so, serious bit of kit.
20191019_150356.jpg

Strapped on the rollers for mapping late afternoon.
20191019_175928.jpg

Could not do a before run as the turbo had been changed for the 250 15t, and the old map seen 25lbs+ of boost on spool so hit the boost cut so that put an end to that!

Chris done a great job and settled at 305hp/297ft/lb. He asked if i wanted to push the torque a bit higher, was tempted as the old map on stock turbo held 310ft/lb for 6 years, however not sure if the clutch would handle it as still on stock clutch.

Drives absolutely epic on the road as expected, he has even ironed out the cold start hold back issue that all the megs seem to have. Overall the car has been transformed, really pleased with it, Chris really puts the graft in and keeps tuning until its perfect, which makes for a great drive on the road, highly recommended.

Final power run

The all important graph.

Cant wait until my Extra van is done, so can get it booked in so Chris can work his magic on it.

Had a few hours on my Extra van engine.

I done a lot of measuring with the dti gauge, and wrote off the cam that was fitted as a bad grind. Took it out and launched it out the garage door, and fitted a cat cams 260 duration. After the recent carry on, checked the piston to valve clearance with light springs and the piston to valve clearance is grand, and no valve spring binding issues.
20191020_155021.jpg
20191020_154450.jpg

I then checked the head to find a couple of valves leaking, so give them a quick lap in which cured that. Hate lapping in valves, i was tempted to send it to the machine shop and get the larger exhaust valves fitted and get the head flowed, but that can wait until the next evolution.

Best pull my finger out and get the engine bay prepped !

A few bits done to the Extra engine today.

The parts quality is shocking for the C1j gtt engines now, had to die grind a channel in the waterpump casting so it would fit, shitty aftermarket parts. May ditch this for refurbed oem or new old stock if possible to find, will see how it goes.

Fitted
20191123_154017.jpg

Cylinder head blank plate fitted, with coolant temp sensor for ecu
20191123_154028.jpg

Trial fitted stainless inlet manifold heatshield, not sure about this yet, will see when offering it up for the final time
20191123_151902.jpg

Spa Boost/Egt gauge turned up, so drilled exhaust manifold for the type k probe

Dug out my coilpack bracket, drilled a hole in the middle as a big slab of steel so not the lightest. Have another batch of parts to paint tomorrow so will give it a spruce up before fitting.

Water pump was the same on my 11 GTL when I changed it the other day. Had to ‘ modify ‘ de-cast the casing to clear stuff. Tempted to bolt a turbo to the 11 🤣

Do you not fancy wrapping or coating the exhaust manifold too to stop heat transfer between both the manifolds?

Im going to get the manifold, exhaust housing and downpipe ceramic coated. Just looking at options at the moment. I had downpipe wrapped years ago, was alright until engine had been in and out a few times then it all fell off. Replaced with stuff that was not up to the job which smouldered and fell off so left it.

The parts are shite arent they, and dear now. If this engine goes tits up, itll get an f lump in:LOL:

Turbo conversion is not too bad, need gtt oil pump and compression drop if using gtt ign and carb. The carbs are all about fucked though sadly, ive washed my hands of them now

Ceramic coating will definitely help out tonnes but it's still not a bad idea to have the stainless piece there just to offer even more protection

Welcome to my world of putting an 11 back on the road ... still trying to get a windscreen for it... been told 9 and the 11 are practically the same up front. Comical to know that mk2 pov spec suspension parts fit aswell 😆

yeah was thinking of putting a blow through Webber onto it and then the turbo bits, but sadly I don’t think I will as the engine bay is 98% original and mint lol

9 windscreen is the same as 11. Ive had 3x 11 turbos back in the day and broke a few low spec for parts. 3 door turbo interior parts were stupidly hard to find 20 years ago in good nick. What does it need ? A lot of the mechanical parts are shared with the r5.

Small update on the Extra

Painted some more engine parts, but still waiting for the exhaust manifold to return from ceramic coating so engine not in yet.

Had a spare hour today and cut out my carbon fibre composite sheet for my stack dash. Cut it by hand and filed the edges up so its knacker tight. Waiting for the relevant road legal warning lights to turn up, then will wire it in permanently.

Progress glacial as usual but still moving.

Made a plate out of leftover carbon fibre to house 2x 52mm gauges
20200104_203917.jpg

Started adding the necessary warning lights to the dash to keep it all road legal, small discreet led's. Excuse the old wiring behind, its all getting redone very soon to suit the stack dash.
20200111_192136.jpg

Engine bay cleaned up a little, the paint had come off the drivers side inner wing when some brake fluid weeped out of the res years ago. Quick rattle can job, as the full bodywork will receive some tlc in the near future.

Engine waiting patiently for exhaust manifold to return this week hopefully.

Had a message off my mate recently and the Kangoo has had a wee on his drive, so got that to fix in the near future:LOL:

Had planned on fitting the engine back in last weekend, but as usual did not go to plan. Dragged everything outside, borrowed my mates engine crane, set up crane to get the engine off the stand, and the ram had a hissy fit and would not go up high enough to get the engine off the stand.

Engine bay looking empty
20200202_171211.jpg

Engine and box outside ready to go, and crane no f**king worky. All back in

However this could have been a bit of a godsend, as i dug out the flywheel and noticed the surface was a bit scored, which would have prob bedded in with the 4 paddle clutch, but then again might have caused issues.

Rang a couple of places local, and was quoted £60+ and over a week lead time. Found a family run machine shop down the road JJC Engineering, and they done it for me for a drink no bother. The owner is great, a fellow petrol head, highly recommended, and dont mind doing smaller jobs.

Done, clocked and turned on the lathe, decent flat surface for the paddle clutch to wreck.
20200205_221129.jpg

Give the driveshafts a clean and paint up too whilst in bits.
20200202_170825.jpg

Im going to top up the oil in the crane and bleed the ram tomorrow and see if it will deliver the goods.

Coaxed the engine hoist back into life yesterday, half a ltr of hydraulic fluid and a bleed and its working. My mate is in denial as i told him the seals are on their last legs, but he wont have it:LOL:

Engine off stand
20200208_125721.jpg

60-2 flywheel and ap 4 paddle clutch fitted with valeo 480 turbo pressure plate, flywheel to crank bolts threadlocked and torqued to spec. Ring gear is a little bit worn, checked my old flywheel and it was even worse but worked ok, so just decided to send it

20200208_143910.jpg

Back in the hole, went in smoothly with no damage.
20200208_150521.jpg

Started routing the wiring, fitted omex crank sensor bracket and ford tdc sensor, throttle and clutch cable back on, then called it a day.

Few more bits done yesterday, shafts refitted, pms shifter linkage fitted, alternator cleaned up and refitted. Seems to take an age to get the little bits cleaned up and done, but slow and steady wins the race i guess.

Mapping booked at Efi for late May so best crack on and get it done!!

Stack dash in and wired with the leds fitted for necessary warning lights. Hours of cable routing and tidying up old wiring, still need to fix the carbon panel in solid, but another job somewhere near and very pleased with the final result :)

Might even make CSF yet;)

Still plodding away

Stack dash finished and 90% wired up, just fuel gauge left to sort. Made some small carbon fibre infill panels to fill the gaps.
20200218_185253.jpg

Spa egt/boost gauge fitted, aem afr gauge fitted and wired into the adaptronic ecu. Reinstated the digi clock, as used to have a boost gauge fitted there.
20200222_193010.jpg
20200222_192743.jpg

Absolutely sick of wiring now:LOL:

Give the mrs 250cup a clean up too. With the weather being crap most weekends, its sat there a bit neglected but had a bit of motivation and cleaned it up. Took no effort, BH snow foam and 2 bucket wash, protection topped up with Gtechniq c2v3.

Wiring routed and clipped to inner wing

Turbo oil feed with filter made up, and stack dash oil pressure sensor remotely mounted. Ordered a pair of alloy adjustable spanners after being messed about royally when trying to order a set of spanners to suit the an fittings. Came from china so prob got a dose of coronavirus:LOL:
20200306_223145.jpg

Cut pipe with grinder, force fitting on tight as f**k pipe, slash hand on braid and repeat
20200307_175703.jpg

Turbo bolted back on and fitted including modified oil return

Ecu relocated to glovebox for ease of access

Fired it up to check all is good, all sensors calibrated

Downpipe fitted. The exhaust housing looks s**t, but keep thinking about gtx 2860 gen2 so dont want to spend money on this one. Might stick a bag on it
20200308_185143.jpg

Oem downpipe to block bracket modified to fit the downpipe.
20200308_184314.jpg

Started fitting the an10 breather setup. Braided hose cut and stab time once again  starting to look busy again now the fuel hoses and reg are fitted
20200308_185059.jpg

Also started mocking up my top mount fuel swirl pot, plenty of room.
20200308_194544.jpg

To do list not getting much smaller but progress is progress even if slow, all the custom bits take ages. Still hopefully see a fire up very soon.

Updates

Booked a week off work to get the bulk of the work done, could count it as self isolation as ive been in the garage all week

Fitted my ching spec silicone coolant hoses, the quality used to be ok years ago (have ran them for years in blue) but would not buy them again, had to cut every one to fit, and they are quite a way off the shape of the original hoses now. They fit ok now i have chopped them about and will work, but overall cheap and crap fit.

Filled up with Renault type d and bled, i have modded the water pump and added a bleed screw to the top which works great.

20200318_151537.jpg

Looks quite busy now. Really regret not getting the exhaust housing coated, but still fancy changing the turbo for a gtx.
20200318_151546.jpg

Note the half finished breather setup. I have used torques fittings for all my fuel hoses and never had a problem.

As only oil breather i ordered cheaper ching spec fast flow fittings at a 3rd of the price. They turned up and were absolutely rubbish, check the egg shaped hole out!
20200317_201914.jpg

Complained and money returned, and re ordered from torques. Always use torques or better for fittings that are under pressure, if they were fuel fittings that would be a fire waiting to happen.

Painted my 2ltr catch tank and fuel swirl pot with bedliner paint
20200314_132221.jpg
20200315_180538.jpg

Made a bracket out of 3mm steel to drop the fuel pump level with the outlet on the swirl pot, still not sure if this is totally essential but i guess it wont hurt
20200318_150325.jpg

Fitted, tucked up nicely and no worries about catching it, as higher than rear beam and filler neck
20200318_175214.jpg

Armed with a load of torques ptfe braided hose and quality rubber braided for lift pump i set about doing the fuel lines front to back
20200319_122026.jpg

Front end back in one piece
20200319_131509.jpg

Not many pics as i was mostly raking s**t out of my eyes even though i was wearing goggles and just cutting my hand on the braid every 2 mins.
20200319_171815.jpg

Measured the hose quite tight to avoid waste and was 6"short on the return from swirl pot to tank, so no start up this weekend. Tried to buy some locally but all the motorsport shops have closed locally, nearest one is 30 miles away and none in stock.

I could cobble some efi hose in as its only a low pressure return, but that means a face/gob full of fuel when i chance it, and i absolutely hate fuel/fuel lines so will revisit when the parts arrive.

Only wiring to pumps to do and fill with oil/prime oil system and should be good for a fire up. Thanks for reading!

Cheers mate, first place i rang was Motoscope as used to use them for an fittings all the time ten years ago or so (time flies!!) i think it was Pock on the phone yesterday and he said they have none in, i guess they must have less stock in.

I think Rival have some in at Newcastle but the shop is closed up due to corona and mail order only. Said bollox to it at that point and ordered from Torques.

Good shout about the hydraulics place, there used to be a great place around the corner from Motoscope, had everything in. Been out the game for a while due to ordering everything off ebay to the door!
