So you said it couldn't be done... 182 Bought!

ok so you have one of the lowest millage 182's on ClioSport and for that reason its inferior to everyone elses because thats just how ClioSport works.

I wouldnt be so sure of that, shame I've got no service history or MOT's to back it up though :(

Is genuine, honest. Not sure if the cambelt has ever been done, has a big crack in it, but ive bought some coilovers instead. Priorities.

my 1500 quid 172 cup with 48k miles on which had been serviced every year and had the belts done recently still needed £1600 quids worth of work doing. nothing is perfect and you have to go in with your eyes open ok that 1600 quid there is a new ktec quiet stealth exhaust.
however we are not on a tight budget and bought the car from someone i knew who had had it for 6 years , also add to that a good friend owns and runs one of the front running clio cup teams i have not had to shell out anywhere near what i should have. The OP has what he wanted , he will no doubt have things sorted and is happy .
alot of wwell maintained cars still arnt without issues to be dealt with

Well yes, i currently have some clocks from a 52k mile 182 under my desk at work. 30 mins and some fiddling with dashbard and the Trophy (which currently has 185k on it), would have 52k miles and be worth about 3 grand more ...

OP - does this clio have any history? I've asked before, but was ignored, it should have 6/7 service invoices/stamps in the book.

Or just plug a laptop into ODBII port and write whatever mileage you want on to your own clocks in 30 seconds ;)

  55 Clio 182, C2 VTS
I bought mine at the end of August 2011, drove it home from Manchester, parked it up and mainly used the the C2, only driving the 182 when I absolutely had no other choice for one reason: Belts were overdue.

I had them done beginning of December 2011 by a specialist (Mick @ DM) and its been my daily ever since. To the OP you would be wise to follow the advice on here, a simple search will show you the damage that can be caused by the belts giving up because some numpty thought "They'll be ok for a month or two".

As for tyres, I got a a brand spanking new V12 for £81, supplied and fitted (not on any sort of offer either!) which I dont think is a bad price at all, though I appreciate that living darn sarf getting a decent price on oxygen can be challenging... I'd avoid part worns if you can pick something up like I did, if you're researching exhausts etc your time (and immediate funds) would be better spent researching belts and tyres.

That said, welcome to CS, enjoy the sarcasm, enjoy the banter but most of all TAKE THE ADVICE. :)

I bought my 172 not knowing if the belts had been done... I just took it to the local Renault garage and got them to check the history on their computers. And luckily they had all the history, it had been done 4k prior to buying it, they printed me proof of receipts for the recent work that had been done...

What are them stickers all about? cheap cone filter, cracked tyres, knackered window , no belts, mileage which seems suspicious, is there any service history?

You have hardly ''done it''.

f**k the exhaust, f**k the tyres, and get the belts done. Then concentrate on getting it mint. I don't think you have done too badly, but its not bargain of the century.

You keep enjoying that 5k kick on those old belts and your asking for trouble, you WILL f**k it up.

I sold my BG mint ( and I mean mint) .. for £2900.

Get the exhaust done, slam it coil overs then sit in McD's carpark like a true hero. If you ask me I reckon the cambelt has probably been done so just go on as if nothings wrong.

Looks ok to me.

Why would the dephaser need changing at less than 30k ? May be im just lucky but my 172 has seen 120K and no sign of the dephaser going.

Is there some envy going on here. What is your 182 worth now you can get one <30k for this money ??? belts done or not..

Because there is more to wear than just mileage, and a lot of people have had problems with their dephasers going recently regardless of mileage so would seem to be age-related rather than mileage.

But yes, I envy someone who asks me how I like "them" apples, after buying a car with seemingly no history, lots needing doing to it, and completely ignoring advice of one potentially expensive problem.

Ok so if so many dephasers are failing there must be a pattern. Is it a lack of oil changes ? Manufacturing or design fault ?

I am quite guilty of not sticking to service intervals. Take the approach of fix it when it breaks ;) As stated never had the dephaser changed and never used a specialist. Still going strong. Saying that i did drop in a new motor at christmas when the cambelt was eaten by the crank pulley.

So my advice is forget about your dephaser. Change your crank pulley at the service interval. I bet not many have changed this item... ( Tongue firmly in cheek )

LOL at this op such a funny read how many times do we have to tell you to get the belt done yet he keeps talking about his 5k VVT kick in bit.

Anyone with half a brain would not rag their car knowing that the belts have not been done. I say this has been in a crash and the owner got the yellow side repeaters from the scrappy. Not the end of the world but its not good.

One word op- LISTEN

  53 Clio's & counting
Missing oil changes kill dephasers - you may be lucky and get the odd ones that survive, but yes, crappy oil kills dephasers

Not sure if serious?

Yep your car sounds awesome too, sounds like it's going strong! That strong it's needed a new engine because it shat itself.

You should get married to Pedro, you'd suit each other perfectly ;)

"OMG OMG IVE GOT A MINTER HOWD U LIKE THEM APPLES?"

" YEAH WELL ME TOO, MINE NEEDS NEW CAMBELT BUT THATS JUST A COSMETIC THING, WHO LOOKS AT A BELT ANYWAY????"

"I KNOW RIGHT, MINES A MINTER, SO MINT I REPLACED THE NEW ENGINE WITH AN EVEN MINTER ONE!!!!"

"ITS SUCH A MINTER I EVEN WENT TO THE EFFORT OF USING FAIRY UP LIQUID TO WASH THE PAINT WORK"

"WELL MINES SUCH A MINTER I DIDNT NEED TO LOWER IT... I JUST LET MY SPRINGS COLLAPSE AND MY SHOCKS HAVE NO REBOUND... ITS BETTER THAN COILOVERS"

Prevention better than cure surely

Think we've just clarified the simple points. If you want to own a minter you need to do the following:
1. Dont service or maintain your car
2. Dont bother checking oil levels
3. Cambelts - Not requiered... simply just rumors and there well over rated

Love a good ol' fashioned thread backfire.

I think he is still treating the cam belt like it's a wear and tear item that will give some warning!

Pedro,
I know nothing about cambelts or mechanics these days BUT do get it done. My son's car ran smoothly, no noise. Then cambelt snapped no noise, NO warning and no car it just died. It is now waiting to go to the renaultsport heaven or a for a new owner who can afford to get it fixed....

Take the guys advice and get it done ASAP. Best be safe.

You will be gutted if the engine dies on you.
