The Gaming Thread (General Gaming Jibba Jabba)

Like a couple of folks here, I am currently playing through Clair Obscur Expedition 33. What a gem of a game, and totally unexpected! I'm not really into turn-based and QTE type combat games, but this hooked me. It really is a great expression of art and emotion. The soundtrack is particularly standout. Playing it through my Dolby Atmos setup made my hairs stand up at times; haunting, whimsical, grim, sombre, emotional - and the perfect fit for the storyline. I'm now going for the 100% completion!

(Example piece of music from the game, of which there are many)

I'm a huge FF fan (from VI through to X anyway). Is it anything like that?

I'd say it is inspired by JRPGs and FF, very much so. But it is different enough to standalone. There is also an element of real-time interaction in the turn-based combat where dodging and parrying is essential in order to thwart enemies and avoid death. 3-party combat, swappable party members, it will arguably seem familiar even though the story is obviously quite different.

COD WW2 appeared on Game Pass this week. How did I miss this first time round?

Played the first two missions of the campaign tonight and loving it. Nice little story so far as well.

I think it was only recently added tbh as they've been slowly bringing a few of the old ones to gamepass since MS bought them out.

I don't think I ever played this one as I stopped playing around black ops 2-MW 2019 so might have to give it a little sesh.

They have released ot for switch 2 too. I am tempted. I can't remember if I played 4th one or I started with underground

Which makes me want this even more if I never played them
How is the Switch 2? Worth buying? What games have you gone for?

When I get my new pc set up, I’ll be setting up Steam properly and have a look at what games I fancy. I doubt I’ll get back to mouse and keyboard now, what is the process to use say a PS5 controller on a pc for gaming?

Piece of piss 👍

It is great. But I have literally played new Mario kart on it and thats it so can't comment properly. The unit itself is great though.
I would get more games and want to try cyberpunk etc bevause never played it before. I struggle with time for games like that
Mario Kart I can pick up and play straight away and put down after 20 mins

Anyone with GamePass - 'High on Life' is on there now which is one messed up random game. Having a load of fun playing it on the occasional downtime I get recently.

i found it a pain in the arse setting a PS5 controller up on the PC, Xbox controller is so easy and the matched the button layout for most games.

I had a nightmare trying to use a PS controller wirelessly on my PC. One of my mates gave me his old Xbox controller and works perfect.

I prefer using Xbox controllers too, most PC games know what it is and map everything nicely.

Dualshock also works though.

Not that I often use a controller but some games (e.g. Stray) pretty much need one.

So...

I finally 100% completed Clair Obscur Expedition 33.

I really enjoyed it, apart from one boss fight - Simon. F**k me. I won't spoil it for others who might want to play the game but holy s**t. That was tough. I refused to drop the difficulty (even though the easiest setting is still a complete barsteward as well it seems). In the end, I did around 20 hours of grinding and farming to super-level my party, worked out which Lumina (skills) worked well together to boost attributes, and then rained down Hell on that mother. I won't spoil the mechanics of the fight/story but it was a tough one, with a couple of twists.

It took me 80 hours give or take. Yeah, that's quite a lot! In my defence, I refused to look for any help or use any guides as I wanted to do this 100% without help, and I spent HOURS wandering around the map looking for items, or trying to figure out what the secret/hidden achievements were. People who have played it can probably appreciate the effort that went into this... :ROFLMAO:

(Yes, I gave them all white hair so I felt more at home...)

After spending 80-odd hours playing the game and enjoying the story, the ending broke me. :ROFLMAO: After getting so caught up in the story of the two main storyline characters, to be then faced with such a decision as the last action of the game.

Probably the surprise game of the last few years for me. Especially as I don't really "do" turn-based games as such.

WRC 24 (Codies and EA) is currently £14 for everything on PS5. Picked it up, you can tell EA have had a hand in it, w**k customisation etc. but other than that, it's alright, even more so for £14. I'm a bit hooked on it.

On another note, does anybody know anywhere in the Manchester/Liverpool area that can or will diagnose and fix a PS3? I've had it since release and it's a 60GB backwards compatible jobbie, I'd like to use again. I believe it's the old Yellow light of death, haven't tried turning it on for 10 years.

Console Wizard Bolton.

Think I sent mine there after it had been playing up for a while.

CPU was fried and they seemed to say they were linked to the motherboard iirc. Fingers crossed for yours. 🤞

Played it when it was on GP before but I got to one of the bosses and it broke, died and the boss never reappeared and I was stuck.

Was away last week on Holiday so when everyone went to bed I started again. Just on the last Kubris mission at the moment.

High on Life 2 out soon I think.

Guys,

Looking to buy a PS5 - in addition to my Xbox Series X.

A mate of mine has said to avoid the digital edition, and go for a Disc Console. I get the premise - physical games can be picked up cheaper etc - but in honesty, I download the majority of my games, our local GAME has closed etc, so is it worth just sticking to a digital console and saving about £100? Or is there another implication I’ve not considered?

I considered the disc edition when it was released many years ago, but went digital. Most people now have decent internet so I really don’t see the appeal of the disc version.

f**k getting up every time to change games as well🤣

That’s my thinking, lovely, Digital it is

First thing I'd do with either console is bung extra memory in. It's a 5 minute job, just double check the memory stick before pressing buy.

I can't remember the last disk I bought tbh.

Yeah, fair. I’ve got a 2TB HD plugged into my Xbox (I should’ve gotten memory, but the Hd was used in an older Xbox).

Will probably go disc, annoyingly the Black Ops 6 bundle is out of stock at Argos, so I’d need to get one delivered (EE have an offer on, but it’s not next day delivery) - yet to check Amazon.

Pretty sure you can only store games on external hard drives and not play them from them so you’d have to copy them over to the console each time you wanted to swap games around.

Not the case, you can play a select number of Series X/S optimised games directly from an external HDD, in the file information it will say "XboxOneGen9Aware", however most Series X/S optimised games do need to run from either the internal storage or an official storage expansion card, but as you said can be stored on a HDD and moved back again to play.

Plus any older XBox One or backwards compatible Xbox 360 games will run from an external HDD, so keep the faster storage free for games that actually need it rather than wasting it. (y)

My Series X has a 1TB storage expansion card and a 5TB external HDD.

Sorry, should have clarified, I meant the PS5.

Oh well, still good information for any Xbox people reading this post as there is a lot of misinformation on this subject.

Sucks that Sony don't allow games to play direct from a HDD, but then you can upgrade the SSD on a PS5 easily, so pros & cons.

Has anyone played Roadcraft?

Saw a clip on Youtube and been watching a few videos, it looks like an ideal candidate for this years winter game for me, I sometimes can get bored with sims that have too much freedom but it seems more objective focussed this one.

Not sure if it needs to be on PC, I'd like to buy on PS5 to play on the sofa.

It appears to be available on both PS5 & Xbox.
It does look interesting/different, I’ve never played anything like that before.

Looks very similar to the likes of Snowrunner (may even be by the same dev). I have considered giving this ago. Chilled, laid back kinda game.

Absolutely loved Mudrunner, this could be up my street. Never thought I'd get such a kick out of driving a truck from one side of the map to the other through deep mud and water. A 'mud simulator' featuring trucks was a better name for it.

I've played the demo to death. At least, I think it's Roadcraft... :ROFLMAO: I was cutting down trees, laying cables, making roads...surprisingly addictive. The multiplayer looks fun where you can team up with mates and run a full crew on different vehicles. :ROFLMAO:
