Has anyone contacted the guy on here that is supposed to be linked with Renault UK?

Anyway just another update as ive had a boring day at work.
I have now been intouch with the following.
The Sun, The Mirror, The Daily Mail And...... Top Gear magazine + tv.

I tried to speak to some one from my local dealership and he was very snotty with me on the phone, specially the line of "i need your vin number or theres nothing i can do as i might get the wrong one" so number aquired and then "theres only one leather steering wheel we do and yes it is real leather" Really??

I contacted David RUK a few months back, he was very helpfull and got me straight in contact with someone at Reno UK. However this was totally pointless as they dont see it as a issue, after phone calls back and forth i go nowhere at all.
Below is a few rants i have had in this thread:-

Bored so just did a bit math.
Out of all UK registered Clio sports from 172 ph1 to the Clio Trophy, which is 13069 cars.
Based on the amount of names on this list 388.
388/13069x100 = 2.968%.

So thats 2.968% of all clio sports on this web site whos steering wheels have fallen to bits. Can you imagine what this % would be if all people with RS Clios had their names on this list. I think it would be well over 7% or 1000 RS Clios, which IMO is a major design issue, bearing in mind this started happening to most cars with low milage.
Anyway just a bit of a rant as i have been in contact with Renault again and im still told this isnt a issue and they havent seen any complaints regarding this adn i wont be getting a new or discounted steering wheel.

I took my Trophy in just before it was 3yrs old but no luck, just the old 'Wear and Tear' crap that Reno come out with. Fair enough it was quite high milage but not over the warranty millage, plus this has happened to cars with low milage so it cant be 'wear and tear'. Just a design fault that Reno realise is going to cost them alot of money. If they replaced everyones on here at the price they would charge us for parts and labour it would cost approx £162960.
We can live in hope though .

Because then if the list goes from 430 ish to over 2,000 (5% of members) then it will be easier to point out to renault that it is more than a design flaw or mistake on materials.

Can you imagine if Renault lost 5% of car sales across the UK because of some thing as daft as this being advertised on the tv or car magazines? If you said £10k per car (i know not all cars are buts its an example) times 2000 customers thats £20 million.

I don't think we'll be sending out a mass pm.

Of that large number of registered users on here a very small percentage are active members - maybe 2000. Of those active members lets say 50% own RS models? And out of those 50% how many would suffer from this? 25%? We're getting towards numbers that you already have on your list.

Added to the fact that all effected cars are well out of warranty now (5 years out +), I can't see you getting anywhere anyway.

I wish you best of luck, because I have the same problem, but i fear it is a waste of time.

182 with both cup packs - section of right side of steering wheel melted, 20 odd thousand miles.

Suppose someone replaces their steering wheel with aftermarket, not for aesthetics, but purely due to melting issue. And then suffers a serious injury in an accident due to there being a metal plate in front of their face instead of an airbag - would Renault do something? (Not that I'm offering to give it a go.)

Apologies if this has been mentioned previously in the umpteen pages of this thread - tbh, I haven't read them.

I would sooner put up with a melting steering wheel than risk killing myself in an accident. Renault would do nothing if you chose to change it.

I think Renault would only do something if there was a serious incident and the press decided to take an interest, and put pressure on them. So not very likely - and I'm obviously not hoping for someone to get hurt/killed.

Obviously we are not going to get anything but i cant believe Reno still havent sorted the steering wheels out on newer RS variants, 197 wheels also starting to fall to bits, also sure i read somewhere a 200 wheel has started doing the same.
Maybe if they had people designing the interior as inteligent as the people that design the chassis they wouldnt fall to bits quite as easy!

A lot of people are putting a lot of effort (and sometimes cash) into working out which other Renault steering wheels will physically fit, and how to connect the wires. I'm sure many, like myself, want to retain the airbag, cc functions (for those that have it) and factory look, all for reasons of safety, aesthetics and resale value.

But ultimately there are still two big questions -
1. Would the airbag go off in the event of an accident?
2. And would the airbag behave in the manner that it should, in what would ultimately be a different car than that for which it was intended. If it was that easy surely there would be loads of aftermarket, airbag equipped, steering wheels. If the airbag didn't deploy correctly it could do more harm than good.

As I see it the only people who could give a definitive answer would be Renault themselves. I can't see them investing so much in what are, as they will see it, old cars (in the case of 172 and 182's anyway.)

I wonder if there are any engineers out there who are involved in this field who could add their, informed, opinions.

For me it's no longer about the money - ultimately each of us will have to fork out for the 'fix' ourselves. But what is the 'fix'? I wish Renault would help.

The only obvious answer is a re-trim. I contacted two Cheshire based vehicle upholstery companies. One gave me a ball park figure of £250 over the phone, which is probably about right for a good quality job. I was going to call round and see them so they could have a look.........but then I called another company. They said they now refuse to re-trim the steering wheels of modern, airbag equipped, vehicles as they are such a tricky shape to work on, and they would still have to ask for a relatively large sum of money, they can't be confident of maintaing their standards of workmanship. They sound like just the kind of company you'd WANT working on your car. So I was a bit put-off. It's always possible they're so busy it was just a way to turn the work down, maybe re-trimming a steering wheel isn't profitable enough for them. But that's not the impression I got.

My steering wheel has only started to go in a small area on one side, and I know others' are much worse. But I intend keeping the car for at least another couple of years, and it's only going to get worse. I'll need to sort it before I sell. If would be laughable that in such a great drivers' car you have to worry about your steering wheel melting (I'm sure the owners of other marques do laugh).........if it wasn't such a pain

So, what to do? :S
