Racing blue 182 Turbo

  Turbo 182 Alfa 159
Thought I best start one of these so I can keep everything in one place. Its not back out to play yet but I'm sure it won't be long.

So it started off as a lovely lowish mileage RB 182. Added a few mods
Cooksport springs with suspension refresh
Pure motorsport strut brace + solid top mounts
Powdercoated my OZ F1s gold with RSRs
Ferodo DS11.1 and Godspeed discs

Time to abuse it around the track so hammered a few track days out in it. Got annoyed by people thinking because their car was the slightest bit quicker down the straight they didn't have to move over even though the clio was a lot quicker else where so had 197 cams installed. Made just under 190bhp with the cat still in situation. Heres some photos of it on track.

So I sulked and left it sat in the bodyshop for a week or so while I decided whether to fix it with the cammed engine or bang another standard engine back etc. Then got talking with a few mates about boosting it for a laugh so gave Andy a text to discuss a few options, more just to see what was what at the time. We discussed low boost etc and that was the plan. So trailered it to ClioTurbo for low boost. For some reason by the time I had got there I thought it would be even better to go for a fully forged engine and a GT2560R turbo in the aim to crack 300bhp but with minimal lag.

So thats it for now really. Plan was to have it back around a month ago so I could take it to the Nurburgring and Spa but sadly as we all know things never go to plan with cars so I've had to cancel my trip.

Will have to draw up the final list of what the actual spec will be when it hits the road, I can't remember off the top of my head.

I've also opted for Apexi AVCR Boost controller so I can run it at around 240-250bhp when I want.

I don't like having gauges all over the dash either, plus there isn't anywhere in a clio for them to go really so I have also added to the spec a Zeitronix Wideband ZT-2 and LCD which I can monitor a few things with.

Can't wait for it to come back now, I have not driven it since end of May  Stupid car! 😂

Good stuff .. Boost is addictive. You may have seen my cup there when you dropped yours off.

Wow. This looks epic.

What actually happened to the engine originally? Bent valve?
Low mileage too.
Makes me worry about mine. Lol.

Would love boost. Hate threads like this.... major boost envy. Lol

Yeah was a bent valve. Should of put supertechs in when i cammed it and learnt my lesson from my 1st 182 lol. But owel live and learn i guess.

Supertechs are going in this time though with boost!

Don't do it haha! I hate to think how much money I have threw at it this year.

Does a bent valve usually f**k the entire engine? Or is it a just case of new head, maybe cams, then all is well?
My knowledge is quite basic.....

You do hear of quite a few "dropping a valve", is it down to poor timing or just one of them things?

I'd love to boost mine, but the cost makes me shudder. Lol. Especially a forged build like yours.
Will be epic though and worth the money.

My wife hates the car anyway, so if I told her I was spending 3 or 4k on a low boost turbo setup she'd file for divorce. Ha ha

Yeah the head was ruined on mine so he sourced me a better engine to put in. I think mine was just down to abuse, living up in the high revs all the time. It has never had an easy life. Was starting to get quite thirst oil wise as well.

My last one dropped a valve because I was a chav with a silly pops and bangs map.

Haha my Mrs doesn't mind thankfully, hence why she ordered the Abarth. Who was I to say no when I've blitzed all this money myself lol. She is actually looking forward to having a go in it. Was supposed to be on the look out for a house this year but it will have to be next year now between cars and holidays we have spent to much.

Ah right. [emoji41]
No pops and bangs on mine and doesn't use oil at all. So good signs [emoji4]
When I'm on track, which has only been twice, I try to keel revs to about 6-6.3k to minimize abuse.

Couldn't find a abarth thread. Or you not made it yet?[emoji4]

Man. Those seats!! This is going to be an epic car. In my 2nd favourite colour too [emoji41]

Nice thing about about boost is you don't have to rev the nuts out of it to make good progress. Made the right decision
going forged and High.

Thats a good sign at least, mine was doing a litre+ in no problem at all on full track days.

No thread yet, not got any photos to put in it lol. Colour she chose isn't even on the online config and the few photos I have found are of lesser models or photoshops. Hope she bloody likes it when it arrives haha.

Just need to source some stoppers and sort of lsd next. Not sure what route to take on the brake setup.

Mine only went in a week past friday so will still have a while till mines ready.

Got a few other things im going to do to mine but will wait till i get it back.

Very nice, is yours the low mileage one around 36k? He did mention one to me.

I've also added a Pure Motorsport exhaust to mine aswell, more money haha.

Yeah thats mine.Have owned it since june last year and its been a great car and love when i take it out.

Came to the point where it either needed more power to make it more exciting when it comes out or sell it for something else.Had already spent quite a bit on it and love the car so now its away getting alot more spent on it.

Bloody hell. A whole litre.
Mine didn't use any on last one I did and nothing in catch can either.

Thought so, will be a while before you get.your fiat. Gonna be good!

Well judging by the rest of your build the brake setup will be great too.
Is this going to be track only?

Is this going to be track only?

Pretty much, although it will be driven to and from the track days as I don't have a trailer myself. Suppose it depends on how reliable it proves to be. Can't be bothered trailering it every where though it takes to long.

Got bored of my Rover 75 so accidentally won this on ebay as a new daily the other month. I'm sure this could probably tow it if I wanted too.

Stage 3 kit .. It's in for a Vag box with quaife and swapping the GT28rs for a side mounted GTX2867r

lol it just never ends does it!

I've been eyeing up that conversion of the 02m box myself. What made you change? Have you ruined a few jc5 boxes? If you don't mind would you pm me what its cost you roughly for it.

I done around 1800miles on a rebuilt JC5 with no issues at 330bhp. If you treat them with a bit of sympathy it will be fine. Start launching it in 1st and 2nd, it
will go pop fairly quick. I won a 60k O2M and new quaife for £750 on ebay. You will have to speak to Andy re the other costings.
The reason for the change is it will be 400+ and that would just be silly on a JC5 .

Quite a few of us with 182's in for high boost stage 3 clios in at Clioturbo right now. Cant wait and am so excited to get mine back, should be finished soon I hope - Andy said 8 weeks and its been 11 weeks today. Going to keep my eyes open for write off V6 4motions, R32's and S3's to have the box out of now.

Yeah.
That's a cracking looking daily! Alfa estates are very nice looking motors. [emoji106]
From all the boost threads I read, seems like it all starts with a basic low boost option.... few pages later it's forged everything with 02m conversion and bells and whistles everywhere [emoji41] ha ha. Seems no matter how hard people try, it's impossible to not get carried away. Kinda why I don't wanna start.
Tbf I'd prob just buy a mk1 FRS instead. Got an itch to get one.... one of my all time favourite cars.

Dooby. That sounds a mental build! 400 in a Clio is nuts. [emoji41]

All you lot have too much money [emoji14]

With all the business Andy's getting, I'll have the only non turbo Clio in UK. Ha ha

Man I really want a go in a 172/182 turbo. Reckon it would be hilarious. What sort of price we talking for a basic turbo build and are they reliable?

That seems reasonable to me. Bet they surprise pretty much most things out there too

Id go at least stage two, with this you get a bigger garrett, low compression pistons, high boost low boost option with the flick of a switch, all your belts done, a helix 4 plate paddle clutch and about 50 more hp.

What are your expectations in terms of reliability and ongoing costs? How many miles will you cover and how handy are you if things to break?

Just wondering if you see this as a fit and forget upgrade, or are preparing for £1,000 a year costs to keep everything sweet.

Not particularly handy myself, happy to get stuck in though. Not new to the world of silly cars though, one of my best mates has a 500bhp+ Astra VXR so I've seen him blow up ££££ worth of engines/turbos etc, him and his brother are very handy so I have all the mechanical help I need on hand between my friends. Andy isn't too far from me either if I needed to get it back to him.

Mileage wise no idea, its a 2nd car so not massively fussed if it proves to be a bit of a pain in the arse. Its mainly going to be seeing track days and a small amount of road use.

I think you have to go into these builds with your eyes wide open, I would never expect it to be a fit and forget situation as much as we would all like it.

I don't see why it can't be fairly reliable though, its essentially just a forged Megane engine now. It won't be silly power anyway.

Fully prepared for it though, I'm not new to blowing cars up lol.
