Help - 172

Car  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Finally decided to part ex my 307 pug and get a 172. Been to carland (yeah i know!) today and found an absolute mint 03 plate 172 with only 11,400 miles on the clock. It had 182 wheels on it but there wasn't a single scratch or ding in the body work. Just two things that concered me was that it was only serviced once in its life time this year at 10k. Also there is a tray which seems to sit under the engine and it was covered in oil. It wasn't dripping on the road but when you run your finger on it you picked up aload of grease! any ideas??

Thanks

Kenty

Carland - :(

Where was it serviced? Sounds like they changed the oil the lazy way and didn't bother taking the injector shield off.

Yeah thats was we thought. It was serviced at a renault dealer. Managed to knock the guy down to 8.5k which I thought was pretty reasonable considering I saw a cup in much worse condition for the same price earlier today

Too much imo.

For £8500 - £9000 you can get 12 - 18 month old 182's with both Cup packs if you look about.

Have a look in our for sale section and you'll see 172's at arround the £6000 region.

Check the dipstick for the oil, make sure its full..
Could just have spilled the oil when replacing the filter

gotta part ex the pug though :( Seen loads of 172 with 30k + on for 7,500. Just it was absolutely mint not a ding any where and had well low milage

Was it thick oil or a light oil?? if it's light oil give it a wide berth!! gearbox seals which means a new gearbox... according to Renault if the seals are replaces and it still does it then change the box. £2495 all in and that's warranty labour!!!!

I'd sell the Pug privately.

£8500 is well over priced. The milage may well be low but at 11,000 miles it isn't even run in properly yet. You'll probably find the usual problems crop up and the cars out of warranty.

Better to save some money, buy a 172 privately with 30,000 mile on it and by then most problems will have been fixed under warranty by the previous owner.

oh dear that don't sound to good. it was fairly thick and all over the cover. Didn't look at the dipstick cos the engine was still too hot. Would you notice anything in the gear change cos it was better than my current car?

gear box oil is horrible to smell and stays in your nose for ages lol

I paid 6.5k for my 03 plate cup172 with 35k on the clock - alot more miles, but at the price you were/are going to pay i'd expect full service history, top notch paper work too.

and.... after market alloys (renault i know)- - its been used hard imo

it was serviced by a renault dealer only 4 months ago! oil didn't really smell but it was on the outside facing the road not dripping. if its normally a sloppy oil change it rests inside the tray facing the engine doesnt it

yeah but theres a small circular cover you remove to drain the oil if it was spilt on the inside the it would seep through causing a damp patch. Engine oil also smells of petrol did you check the oil level on the display?

GRIFF - sorry not to good with engines! hence why my mate spotted the oil on the tray and not me

Danny Boy - yeah i hope so too, seen two over priced ones in well average condition before this one though
