Have you done a complete list of what you have done? Be interested to know, slowly reading through!

You thinking going to 15’s and super light?

Couldn’t fit 15” over the 300mm front disc/Brembos setup unfortunately.. I have seen some very nice light wheels about lately.

These are nice but not actually that light.. the classic speedline turinis or OZ ultraleggs always catch my eye too!

Hi guys, been quiet on my build thread for a while... car is still going strong.

I’m about to embark on the next stage of my engine for this years Nür/spa trip.

List of goodies are,
Supertech inconel valves.
Megane 3RS pistons which have been pocketed on the exhaust side.
Megane 3RS rods with grooves machined to take tabbed type ACL bearings.
New Rings.
New head set.
Timing belt kit, aux belt kit and dephaser.

It’s not about shooting for massive power, it’s more about prolonged engine life.. after 5+ years of a relatively high powered, low boost setup I keep feeling like something could give. Be it a valve dropping, which is becoming more common now or a rod letting go etc.

It could go on forever in its current form but I like playing anyway.. I don’t think anyone has done what I’m doing as they all go forged.

I’m not going down the forged route, as a daily and a track car a forged engine wouldn’t last long with cold starts, short journeys etc.

It’s basically going to be a hybrid meg 3 RS Clio 182!! It could obviously have the scope to go to near the power of a mapped meg 3 RS but that would ruin the drivability of my car so I’ll see what works well on mapping day... would like in the region of 280bhp 260ftlb which is a fair leap from its current 245/235 tune..

I’d like to keep my gearbox and current Sachs racing clutch happy also [emoji3061]

I also won’t be upgrading the T25/28 hybrid yet so that could be a limitation for now. Will see how that goes.

It should be around 9:1 + compression with the standard Clio 182 gasket which is slightly higher than a standard meg 3 rs which is 8.4:1 I believe.

Going to be an interesting month, will update with pics and results. [emoji106]

Nice to do something different to what everyone else does. Watch for ringland issues with the pistons as winding in too much boost to them is fatal.

This build really goes to show that a turbo conversion can be reliable if it’s assembled with care. Looking forward to seeing the work done. Are you near completion with it now or is all that work still ahead of you?

Cheers mate, I won’t be going crazy boost. The meg 2 RS pistons were more problematic than the Meg 3 RS pistons I’m using. I’m just about to start it all after compiling my parts, sourcing rings etc! A company called MAR MOTORSPORT were able to get my rings [emoji106]

And yes it has been absolutely reliable, it’s had some serious abuse too. Feeling a little bit sad about pulling it apart again [emoji20]

Seems a shame to open this up, but it’s worth it for peace of mind.

Plus more boost ??

Yeah I was nearly in tears mate, when the head was off you can see how well it had been running, looked perfect.. the bearings etc were all like new [emoji30] as expected of a 70k mile engine!

But like like you say, peace of mind and I don’t have to worry about a valve dropping either!

Will be better than ever with a nice refresh though

Ah yeah now we're talking. Did you do the hone yourself dude or get it done on at the shop? You putting in 197 or cat cam springs in? Not that they're needed but they can reduce float, particularly the cat cam ones but the more cost effective 197 ones too.

Nice to see this just being done so quickly but clearly a lot of planning has gone into the work which I like!

It took a lot of planning to get things all together, lots a waiting too.

I did the hone in place, the pictures actually make it look quite rough but they are perfect and it was only very light!

Spring wise.. I’m using the standard springs but with the pure motorsport shims under the valve stem seals as I’ve noticed on the supertechs the collets groove sits about 1.2mm higher than standard which would reduce the spring rates..

original exhaust valves weren’t too good!

I’ll try and get it all back together tomorrow and hopefully fire it up [emoji51][emoji51]

Looking good! Head looks absolutely spotless!

Mind linking me to the copper gasket? Did yours blow from there before? I'm doing a very similar build at the moment and want to avoid all the teething problems as much as possible. Already got inconel studs, heico washers and knuts but your gasket has got me thinking now! Log manifold also looks painted black but I guess that's just the heat.

Bet you're looking forward to getting it back up and running. Is is booked in for mapping yet or do you want to see how it runs first? What are you doing about running it in? So many questions!

Here you go mate, with the upper brace I have made up its sorted the issue of the two top studs coming loose but the surfaces - even though they were machined flat have a tendency to warp slightly, which is why a nice thick copper gasket is a good idea to take up any imperfections that occur from heat cycles...

Defo recommend a top brace mate, all that turbo wants to do is pull away otherwise!

And no the manifold isn’t painted, it’s just from the heat as you say and plenty of WD40 treatment [emoji23][emoji23]

Looking forward to getting it done now, so busy at work so having to play between jobs [emoji30]

Booked for the 6th of July, just need to Group N time a mates Clio and fit a new full Exhaust system on a 265 megane who are also coming on the same day for mapping

A few pics of how a Megane 3RS piston compares to a standard Clio 182 piston, the Megane piston was my test piston for exhaust pockets. You can see how much more of a quality piston they are now compared to 182 or Megane 2RS. The Megane 3RS piston weigh approx 30g more too..

Have been driving it around mildly since finishing the build last week and it feels great.. really want to give it some right foot but will hold off until mapping done.

Feels very smooth and responsive though, I’m pretty sure the old exhaust valves weren’t sealing great previously.. with the new mapping I’d imagine it won’t need to be tuned so safe and rich so exhaust valves won’t carbon up... also being inconel they won’t get so hot!

Thanks for the gasket link :)
Amazing what a difference there is between the pistons. Would love to know why they’ve gone for a different skirt design and what the coatings on it are because it looks lighter at first glance. Looks like it would be ever so slightly higher compression on the top hat. Figures will be interesting!

No worries, it’s lower compression. The volume of the dish on the top of the Megane piston is about 11.60cc and the standard is basically zero.. pictures are deceiving! [emoji106][emoji106]

understatement of the year ;)

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] it’s funny because I started noticing a few pops and bangs on over run occasionally and it never used too, ironic really as that’s what pops and bangs mapping could potentially do to people’s exhaust valves!

  dan's cast offs.
It's pretty common, I'd say 75% of the engines I've pulled apart have got them either the same or worse. The 197/200 are the worst ones, stripped an engine with around 50,000 miles on the other month and they were worse than yours!!!

Hi I was wondering if you only felt the need to upgrade the T2 gasket because of it blowing at the manifold or did you loose the standard T25/T28 gasket in favour of the more malleable copper plate aswell?

I’ve run with gaskets in the past which generally fail and crack causing it to blow slightly, most OE stuff don’t use gaskets between the manifold and turbo so I went down that route and had both faces machined flat and it worked great, but over time it must warp slightly so I thought a malleable gasket which is thick enough to cope with the heat would be a good idea, also takes up any small deviations in the mating surfaces...

  dan's cast offs.
They won't do any harm that's for sure!!

Think it's a combination of hard seats, bouncing off the limiter and detergents etc in modern fuel. Not actually sure how good the original valves are regards material used and hardness of the face on them.

Cool I'll just go overkill and get a set of copper gaskets, some locking washers and copper locknuts. If that doesn't prevent gasses leaking for a while i don't think anything will

Great day yesterday, mine made 282bhp 258ftlb @12psi boost.. it has more to give but we reached close to the the highest duty on the 225 injectors that Chris was happy to go to. But to be honest that result is exactly where I wanted it.. nothing is stretched, nothing is under stress so I’m very pleased. It goes extremely well and smooth.

I’d consider going for 630cc injectors but unfortunately GEN90 ECU’s aren’t great at larger injectors and I’m very finicky with drivability!!

Megane 3 RS made 317bhp and 356ftlb which is awesome

The Clio 182 I did group N timing on made a very strong 189.6bhp, Chris said it’s one of the best ones he’s seen and worked a lot on the mid range mapping as the tool we made is quite aggressive! It idles well and is a weapon!!
