I love France, this was parked round the corner from the Extra:

It's old and still being used everyday I bet, none of the new plate snobbery that you get here.... Not outside of the big cities anyway.

RRG update.

Took the Extra van to Mallory Park for Retro Rides gathering a couple of weeks ago. RRG is one of the best Retro car shows of the calendar year and is a mega day. I had booked the Extra on the 2 lap sprint in the afternoon for full send laps on high boost.

Id done a bit of prep and logging beforehand and all seemed OK after Anglesey. Noted boost pressure seemed less stable than usual and high boost was not as high as usual seemed to be down a couple of psi. Whatever afrs were good and it was safe so i blamed higher ambient temps when testing.

I done a few checks before setting off and all good. Coolant needed a little top up, hardly anything but done it regardless as its a long trip and im travelling light i.e. not a van full of spares as on the sprint.

Sets off and all going well. Stops off mid point to rest ears and piss.

Looks clean.
20240810_173529.jpg

Mrs points out that its pissing out coolant.
20240810_174939.jpg

Luckily this was an easy fix. Basically when id topped up coolant pre journey the seal on the header tank cap had decided to not seal and fold itself inside the cap. As the engine runs really cool on normal driving it didnt cause an issue but system was not holding pressure and it caused the coolant to raise/come out with the lack of seal when engine is switched off hot and coolant not circulating.

Ive had this issue before and have bought a few new caps including oem and they have all been shite quality, some not sealing from new. I had a spare cap with me in the flight box in the back and swapped seal over. New seal fixes the issue and header tank is sealed. Coolant was still on the max too as it was hot, looked like loads but hardly any lost, just needed a small top up the next day when cooled down.

Sets off and does another 100miles no issues at hotel the night before. Brim tank with tesco 99 ready for sprint laps.

Show day comes and get into Mallory park eventually after leg ache paddle clutch in traffic.

Surrounded by retro motors.

Afternoon comes and get over for the sprint. Its absolutely scorchio 25-28degrees so take numberplate off for max airflow as it will need all of it.

Queing up in the pitlane with @Renny 5
20240811_134929.jpg

20240811_135326.jpg

Mega banter with @Renny 5 as usual and we have managed to group up for the sprint runs. Mine c1j, Marks 5 172 powered with throttle bodies, lad behind (forget his name apologies!) Has a f7p engine on carbs from memory.

Anyway its usual comments of full send as its a sprint run so no tyre and brake warmup just get on it. My tyres still have a s**t load of pickup from Anglesey so not the best but full send it is!

Im first out in our group and straight out round gerrards from the pits.

Trying to warm up tyres on the job its fat out on exit of Gerrards late braking into Edwinas. Turn into Edwinas which is a sharp left and absolutely sideways on cold rear tyres which was not expected but manage to get it back fast without spinning.

Complete the lap and fast as poss round Gerrards as tyres seem to be on grip wise. Flat out on the exit of gerrards in 3rd gear, the engine is feeling super lively and i hear a massive bang out of the exhaust. I assume ive hit the hard cut rev limiter although rpm seemed lower than usual, bang it into 4th gear and it just feels a bit flat. Look at boost gauge just before devils elbow and boost pressure is right down to wastegate 12psi and fluctuating all over the place and my high boost switch is doing nothing its low boost or low boost.

Flat out exiting Gerrards and shot gun bang.

As its a sprint the 2nd lap is up and i get it back into the pits. Open bonnet, its about ten thousand degrees under there but i notice the Mac valve for boost control has self destructed and the centre is gone!

20240811_211026.jpg

I assume the bang exiting gerrards was actually boost cut and it was bleeding off more boost than it should have been, but luckily the engine is mapped for 27psi and boost cut is 300kpa (29ish psi) so nothing was hurt.

I call it a day at that and be thankful that it has not ejected a piston, liner or headgasket in the process.

Not very often that you see 2x Extra vans these days.
20240811_162848.jpg

Set off home at steady pace and made it back no furthur issues. Win some you lose some eh.

A few pics from on track. Its a shame i never got a few more sessions in as i like Mallory, its a quick circuit.

A few days after Mallory i dug my spare mac valve out to fit. Was originally on the trophy briefly..test it and works OK so wire it up.

New one on the left.
20240814_163252.jpg

Fitted and static test that its working ok. Hook up laptop in prep for some datalogging in the future.

Wari software.
20240818_122216.jpg

Quick test on the street and wastegate pressure is back to solid 12psi and a quick tickle of high boost it goes straight up to 21/22psi in the mid range. Need to take it out on an evening and do some datalogging in 4th gear and tweak if necessary.

Had a job for it today. I had located a spare rear beam off a breaker Extra van and needed to collect it, and it aint fitting in my blue clio or kangoo compact so this was the vehicle for the job.

Short trip to Doncaster.
20240824_162825.jpg

Used as an actual van!
20240824_162850.jpg

The extra van beams are quite hard to come by now as they are about extinct. Plan is to refurb the rear beam and upgrade the bushes to a bearing kit thats available and can fit it straight on. The current rear beam bushes on the van itself are well worn and sloppy due to age/mileage and well overdue replacement.

Im going to see if i can sniff out either a whiteline rear arb for clio 1 williams/16v or something similar and fab up brackets to suit.

Thanks for reading!!

That KABOOM 💥 shame you didn’t get anymore Track time… mine was flying even though it was like being in Spain! Cant wait till next year, think Mallory is perfect for our motors. Always good to see everyone!

Updates.

Blue 225 mot had expired and its not moved this year. Its been shuffled in and out the garage a couple of times thats about it.

Booked it in for mot so got it out over the weekend for a clean and a quick run round the block. Its been on trickle charge so battery is good, checked fluids and it fired up pretty much instantly on 12+ month old fuel and sounded great as usual. Didnt take much effort to get the dust off and was clean in 20 mins.

Clean.

Rare pic of both megs together.
20241020_180044.jpg

Quick run round the block and all seemed fine. Kept it off boost due to old fuel.

Took it for mot today and passed. A whole 12 miles since its last mot!

Nothing changed since last mot.
20241021_160416.jpg

20241021_204503.jpg

It was showing 1/4 of a tank on gauge, so stuck another ten ltrs of fresh fuel in for return trip of 4 miles. Took it the long way back home and as soon as i give it a bit of throttle/0.5 bar of boost it instantly misfired its tits off and i backed straight out of it.

Its never done this before so its either stale as f**k fuel, or fuel pump has decided not happy and pressure is down a bit. Pump was changed 5 years ago and has not done many miles but never say never i guess.

Its had the 630cc siemens deka injectors in for at least ten years so ill prob get them cleaned, new pump in again, rest of the service bits and maybe a run on the dyno in the new year to make sure all is good.

Until then back in the garage and on trickle again.

Thanks for reading!!

Are you taking the extra to CSF? Not doing RetroRides this year so would be good to get this and the 5 on track together again

I am indeed taking the Extra to CSF. Booked on for morning session, you on track?

Ive also sacked off RetroRides this year.

Just 8 vehicles at the moment

The stars have aligned and they are all taxed, insured and mot'd from today. I actually think this is the first time they have all been legal at the same time

Updates.

Extra used as a van today! I had 70ltrs of oil to dispose of and the front o/s tyre needed resealing on the bead on the 225 as it kept going down.

Van life.
20250502_123110.jpg

Extra van works as intended. Flying along as usual.
IMG-20250502-WA0002.jpg

My mate popped the bead off the tyre to reseal. This highlighted the pilotsport 4 that were fitted had gone hard as fcuk with age (2018 datestamp) and were well past their best even though loads of tread.

Michelin usually easy to get off but yeah its just folded.
IMG-20250502-WA0005.jpg

With it being quiet and early afternoon, the decision was made to fit a new set of michelin ps5 on all corners. My mate ordered a new set in from the warehouse and fitted one to the wheel, said go home and tax the car and bring it over and can fit the rest and use lift to service it whilst there. Sounded like a good idea to me and a bit of a push to get it sorted after limited use for last few years.

New PS5
IMG-20250502-WA0007.jpg

IMG-20250502-WA0025.jpg

Went home and fitted the wheel and taxed. This was a bit risky as half a tank of 1- 2 year old mixed fuel in and apart from a quick start up to move out of the garage its not been driven since last mot. It starts and runs fine, but on last run out to mot station it was misfiring its tits off on boost which had not been looked at. Risk it as servicing anyway keeping it off boost.

Had all the service items in stock so filled the Extra with essential bits and set off. Mrs was following me and 3 miles from the house on the dual carriageway shes flashing me to stop. Pull in a layby and she says its misfiring like fcuk as soon as a little bit of boost builds. We swap vehicles and i drive it off boost for the next 6 miles to the garage and it clears its throat after 70mph cruising - i assumed the plugs were fouled a little from short runs.

Straight in the tyre bay. Other 3 wheels off.
IMG-20250502-WA0009.jpg

Dropped oil out whilst hot and noted the oil is super clean as it had only done around 100 miles since changing, but absolutely stinks of fuel. I rarely start the cars up without driving but this has had a bit of time idling/moving in and out of the garage over last couple of years so needed changing badly.

If you have a car in long term storage then dont run it up to temp unless driving as not good.

Action shot changing oil.
IMG-20250502-WA0017.jpg

Filled up with Valvoline synthpower 5/40 and purflux filter.

With that done i moved onto the spark plugs. I changed the plugs in this when we first got it, 13 years ago!! The car had 46k on the clock, and it is now on 70,700. Thats loads of trackdays, mapped for all of that time.

As soon as i took number 4 out i noted that you could walk through the plug gap and you could see where the base was fouled.

Cyl 4,3,2,1.
IMG-20250502-WA0027.jpg

As you can see they were totally finished. I stuck a set of Ngk Bcr8es that i run in all of my meg engines gapped to 0.6mm.

Done.
IMG-20250502-WA0011.jpg

A rare pic of the Extra and 225 out away from home.

IMG-20250502-WA0029.jpg

Its running great with new plugs in and new ps5 are loads better than the ps4 which were quite noisy on the way to the garage.

Forgot to add above, changed pollen filter in the morning. Was discusting as expected.

20250502_102600.jpg

With the tyres, oil and plugs done took the extra home and took it out for a drive round locally, steady away to use this old fuel up. No more misfiring or nothing and done approx 50 miles. Mpg has gone up into the 30s with new plugs so its taking a while to use the fuel, its still got 1/4 of a tank in.

Overall it drives great as all suspension was renewed 4 years ago, and a couple of years ago i done brakes, fluid, gear oil etc.

Still love this 13 years on.
20250502_200246.jpg

Small list of things to do.

Ac needs a regas - compressor is kicking in but gas is low. Was going to sort today but ran out of time.

Change aux belt. Aux belt looks fine as done hardly no miles since change approx 2k at best but will stick one on. Its due a cambelt on age this year, will do that at xmas and renew aux kit at same time.

Fresh fuel and datalog with rstuner and afr gauge. I dont think there is any issues but it doesnt hurt to health check it.

So bit of progress made and back legal again.

Off to Birmingham in the Extra tomorrow. It appears to be running great so should be good to go.

Thanks for reading!!

Updates.

Extra van has been daily driver for last 3 days doing around 500 miles, with a 425mile journey to Birmingham on Sat.

The reason for the trip to Birmingham was to collect an oem renault fitted plastic rear van liner for the Extra van. I had seen one of these 10+ years ago in Bournemouth but was unable to collect as it wouldnt fit in the car i was in, and with it being approx 12 hour round journey didnt bother going back.

Since then i have kept my eye out for another and when i was offered this one it was a done deal, rare but cheap and closer than the last one. With the size of it i had to use the extra to collect as it was too big for any other car we own.

A few highlights from the trip.

No cruising or street racing. White van man nothing to see here.
20250503_133617_7b1d6e8a.jpg

M6 toll.
20250503_143934_92e2d675.jpg

Collected and then onto Tamworth on the way back to collect a megane centre console with arm rest for the r26. I was desperately low on fuel at this point and no super unleaded in garages in the area. This runs like s**t on 95 octane from experience so was reluctant to put any in so had to go to a few garages.

Visited tesco, 2x esso, 2x shell garages and all super pumps were off. Eventually found a shell with vpower and got arse raped £1.56 a ltr.

Yellow light of doom/3ltrs remaining..does not last long in this.
20250503_164545_e685c6a5.jpg

Apart from that it was drama free and back early evening.

425 miles of bosch 044 whine and side exit exhaust.
20250503_203423.jpg

Cleaned up the load liner yesterday. It dropped straight in with no hassle and did not need to remove anything. Looks quite decent and the patina fits in with the rest well.

Load liner fitted.
20250504_203554.jpg

Needs a good clean.
20250504_111526.jpg

Noted a noise on boost on return home. The inlet gasket was showing signs of leaking on cyl1 when smoke tested ages ago and looks to have developed when under pressure.

Signs of fuel vapour.
20250504_122957.jpg

The issue circled.
20250504_131647.jpg

Its not a massive job so no drama. Ive got a few inlet gaskets in stock so will sort next weekend.

Thanks for reading!!

Cracking updates as usual. The bed cover finishes it off nicely.

Glad I'm not the only one struggling to find super unleaded too.

The only place that always has it up my way is Sainsbury’s. Shell in particular are shocking and even when it is in their pumps are the slowest things in the world. It takes forever to get a full tank

Cheers mate!

I couldnt say no to the cover. One of the lads i know who ran loads of the Extra vans in the late 90s as a courier business, said hes never seen one so must be super rare. Id imagine most were ply lined instead as cheaper.

Wonder whats going on with super unleaded at the moment. Seems to be ok in my area and all tesco 99 pumps are on. No idea about vpower, i dont use it and its a 15 mile round trip to get it.

I heard it's some refinery issue with the super unleaded fuels, although can't confirm the source as a mate told me that! South Wales has run dry and I'm running out fast. I've been out looking and not a single super unleaded pump was available within hours of where I am. No way I'm using crappy 95 E10. 🤣

I found 97 octane on morisons in Caerphilly. Closest I've found to super 99 octane.

Just get an octane booster?

Only the expensive ones work, and to get 95 octane up to 99 etc your going to need a fair bit. For instance vp octanium is around £25 and id imagine you will need to use the full us quart per tank to see the required increase.

Loads of tankers out this afternoon and the local Esso stations have just been filled up. Hopefully, things will return to normal now...

Fingers crossed! Be just my luck if there is a summer drought of 99 octane with all of the cars legal for the first time in years.
