Updates.

Gtt is sold! The time was right, as not used it in 3 years and had no real plans to use it with the Trophy added to the collection.

A few pics of it all cleaned up for the memories.

Bought this ex cup racer suite from 1986 last week from Vinted, cost a few quid but had to have it, and thought it would be nice to have a few pics wearing it next to the car for a nice keepsake. 18 years of Renault5 ownership is over.

After the gtt going i needed a bit of turbo fix. Had to go to Bishop Auckland to collect a techincs amp and large speakers for my garage sound system. As they were too long for the Kangoo  took the Extra van.

Forgot how good this is to drive. The noise, the smell of fuel, oil and shame. Flames on the upshifts and bangs on the downshifts. So good, its absolute asbo and i love it.

The only downside is that its also quite tiring to drive at the same time especially when in low speed situations. Solid engine mounts, 4 paddle clutch which bites savage. Combine that with maximum positive camber, manual steering and small Sabelt steering wheel, bosch 044 pump whining and side exit droning and its a headache around the streets. Wouldnt change it mind!!

Also had a tidy out of the garage and used it to ferry some parts from one lockup to another. On its arse.

Seeing your extra van always makes me want a van, seen a nice Extra van on ebay the other day... nearly 5 grand mind 😂
They are either free and look like they have been parked in the sea or expensive ish no inbetween ground. The one that sold recently in Renault livery was epic. Its mad to think that the vans are a lot rarer than any r5 now.

Yeah it's crackers mate, someone on my street used to have an old AX van. I'd hate to imagine how much they are these days!

I think your extra wets my whistle more than the Kangoo does, just for that pure and raw appeal to it

Just read the whole thread. Great cars, great writing, great pictures and a great attention to detail. Hats off to you :)

Update

Had to resurrect the old kangoo 172 cup for my mate the other day. Hes neglected the poor thing and its been sat on a drive not used for ages but partly due to the gearbox being a little bit poorly and ive not had time to change it for him.

At mot in January he had a carry on getting it fired up with immob light of doom on the dash and electrical fault light. Went to fire it up this week with a fresh battery and electrical fault light back on, non start and just cranking over. I knew this would be related to the fusebox area as the wiring was not the best by any means as previous owner had been there before.

Ign on and fuel pump was priming so assume some power to fuel pump relay. Stuck can clip on to see whats stored and basically everything sensor wise was in red so was power or trigger fault.
IMG_20220823_110523_295.jpg

Test meter on fuse box terminals confirmed power at relevant points. Small black relays heavily corroded so cleaned up, no better. White connector of doom showing corrosion on pins, so cleaned up no better. Looked at wiring and small white wire from a black relay had been power probed years ago and corroded which just snapped as soon as i touched it. Bingo
20220821_132725.jpg

As soon as this was done the throttle body was singing away with ign on and fired right up. Wiring repaired here and there but needs some tlc soon, better condition engine loom ideally.

Daft hour job to fix. Topped up gear oil and took it for a flog out still goes well.

This motivated my mate to do some work to it and he fitted the rear roof lining and storage boxes hes had in stock since buying it off me.

IMG-20220821-WA0005.jpg

Took some pics with my Kangoo Compact.

Still looks alright, hes cleaning it up to take to Vanned at the motorist this Sat. Good to see it moving again!

Thanks for reading!

Done a few small jobs to the Extra. Serviced it, fresh Valvoline vr1 racing 20/50 mineral oil and purflux filter. Ive stuck with the vr1 as it seems like good stuff and oil pressure is epic on it. 4bar oil pressure hot over 3k rpm which is miles better than the average c1j that struggles to do the recomended 3bar at 3500rpm when hot.

Stiffer than morning wood these old van shells!

20220901_150100.jpg

Done another job ive planned to do for years but not got round to. The engine has always ran pretty cool with no rad cowling but had always planned on making one to force air through the rad core, as air is lazy and will go round it if it can via the easiest route.

I used plastic abs 2mm sheet for the job. Light, easy to cut and mould with the heatgun. I started with a cad template (cardboard aided design) cut and moulded it around the rad core with sides so air forces through. Its not as neat as id like but functional, fitted with rivnuts and bolts.

20220903_152733.jpg
20220903_152738.jpg
20220903_152727.jpg

Road test revealed that it works well, a bit too well to be fair. The engine has always ran cool on injection around 70deg coolant temps when at speed.

It now drops down to 67-68 degrees when at speed and thats with a stock thermostat. Noted coolant temps drop faster when moving from low speed driving. Its only summer use so not an issue, but if it was used in winter low temps id reckon it would run too cool.

Also took it to Mallory Park for Retro Rides Gathering.

Epic day, took it on the afternoon sprint for a couple of runs. I was struggling to get heat into the brakes and tyres as only 2 laps so had 2x runs out and the back end was quite lively on Gerrards at one point so called it a day at that.

The handling with quaife lsd and leda coilovers is unreal feels so planted. Had mega fun pushing the Alfa touring car replica round.

Only got one pic in the pits as was too busy enjoying the day.

Pics ive grabbed from various people thanks for taking them.

IMG-20220918-WA0043.jpg

Maximum attack on devils elbow. Last time i drove Mallory in it, it would light up the inside tyre in 3rd gear flat down. Loads more traction with the lsd this time round.

With the kangoo currently out of action and the Paris/Nurburgring trip on the cards i needed a vehicle capable of the trip.

Was tempted to take the Trophy but its had its fun on the welsh weekender and the clutch is awful and id like it to be mapped for full power. The Blue meg 225 and the orange dci have been to the nurburgring before and the blue diesel is the daily, doing daily things so the natural choice was the Extra van.

With a kind of fuckit attitude "if it breaks it breaks will sort it" and a bit of confidence in being able to build a reilable setup, i give it a quick once over, topped up the oil, changed the back worn out old r888 for a set of part worn 2020 date stamped r888r. New wipers as looked like it was going to piss down and sent it.

20220930_113041.jpg

Made it to Paris no issues apart from the Crit Air low emissions zones Mon-Fri which it does not qualify for which is a pain and can land a fine.

The route to avoid that took us through all the tunnels, making some noise with the side exit exhaust. Bit of adaptronic hard cut limiter

I cant speak a word of French but got a few nods and shouts of Express Turbo which was cool.

losange passion international 2022.

What an epic show. Its bi annually and 50years of the r5 was the agenda. Its all Renault and over 700 cars were on show/ 3500 visitors.

Such a good vibe, one of the best car shows ive been to. Parade laps on the banked circuut was awesome.

Extra got so much attention could not believe it. I think its due to the modifications as engine swaps are not legal in France and the Extra/Express van is almost extinct over there, so people will remember using them as work vans etc.

Woke up to a nice dry yet fresh morning in Adenau.
20221003_072723.jpg

Filled up with bp ultimate 102octane which cured all issues at the local Aral garage, €2.15 a ltr lol. Noticed an instant improvement in performance and lower egts from this.
IMG-20221002-WA0016.jpg

Done the usual stuff, down to Devils diner in the morning. Was super busy as i believe it was the german equivalent of a bank hol. Went to Brunnchen to view a bit.

Had the Apex m3 ring Taxi booked so went down at Mid day.

What an experience! 4 up in a stock engine m3, cage, nitrons and PS4S road tyres overtaking everyone on a busy TF/Green hell day. Met Misha the owner and he was cool, he wanted to take the Extra out for a lap for hia Youtube channel. I was worried the high boost map would end up in tears as its more aimed for sprint use than hard sustained use so had to decline. Next time when its detuned or the Kangoo once its done.

Onto the complex for a look round
20221003_163756.jpg

Then onto the Nurburgring for a sightseer lap on low boost. Super busy which worries me after my crash years ago but still enjoyed it at 5/10ths pace.

No issues really apart from pulling in the carpark after the lap and opening the bonnet to notice my coolant bottle rising to the top with the engine turned off. Was not too worried as coolant temps fine when running, feeling the coolant hoses to see if hard noted there was no pressure at all, so once cooled i took header tank cap off to discover the seal had popped out of the side when topping up the coolant prior to setting off.
20221003_180117.jpg

Popped back in place and fixed. Engine temp no different interestingly still runs super cool.

Had a pax lap in my mates bm 340i and seen a merc on fire. Felt gutted for the owner, i guess it was too late once he had seen the flames.

Onto PK for beers and steak on the stone in the evening. Ive been to PK loads of times but this time the food was great but the service was s**t, bit dissapointing but nevermind.

Topped up tank with 102 octane, Running late for train so hammer down 120mph+ on the autobahns. Endurance driving so quick couple of stops and home by 10:30ish pm.

1500+ miles done!! Epic

Only used the Extra once since the France/Germany trip and that was to pick up a set of cup2's for the Kangoo, mid October iirc. Check out the size difference between the 13" gtt spare and the 18's

Its currently sat sorned in the garage until the weather picks up.

Mrs got me a stack 5 stage sequential shift light for xmas that plugs into the stack dash.
20221208_212839.jpg
Nice bit of kit, very easy to fit as its a simple plug and play to the dash and is fully programmable for each light via the dash. Ive set the 1st light at 6500 and the final light at 7300rpm for now, which is 300rpm off the 7600rpm hardcut limiter.

Fitted on the cowling in front of the dash.

Vid of it in programming mode.

Its dimmed in this setting. Daytime mode burns your retina's off. Cant wait to test it out though.

Blue meg is also garaged/sorn for winter. Its not been used much but have enjoyed it when its been out. Must get it used more this year.

Parked it up after Anglesey and done nothing until this week.

Small list of bits to do.

Reseal sump - c1j are a leaker anyway but this was getting to be horrendous. I have an undertray fitted and it was getting over the edge of that but hardly using any on the stick.

Assume position.

Found out the black half moon sump seal i fitted was a poor seal on crank side. Ive used ajusa orange seals this time and they seem ok, not holding my breath however. Used victor reins reinzoseal for the silicone gasket.

Whilst in the area had upgrades planned. The van steering rack is horrendous - 4 turns lock to lock same as campus. No idea why i did not change to gtt back in the day but anyway.

Im staying manual steering and the clio 2 1.5dci rack is 2.75 turns so good upgrade. Its almost identical to the van rack, bolts onto the subframe same as oem gtt and gtt tie rods bolt on. My column connection is the same too so was pretty straightforward to fit, had to use an earlier boot to seal the bulkhead as pinion height is higher on the clio rack.

1.5dci rack fitted

Checked suspension and brakea over, all good.Doesnt need much now.

Small list.

Fill up with fresh valvoline 20/50vr1 racing.
Change brake fluid for fresh typ200.
Get new Ar1's fitted to spare cup rims.
Look at fuel gauge wiring or sender issue - was playing up a bit last year.

Roll on Anglesey. Thanks for reading!!

Weekend update

Dying again with man flu or whatever so motivation was pretty low, anyway pulled my finger out and got it back together yesterday.

Bumper and grill back on, repairs to grill mounting points that have been broken since 2008 with plastic welder and epoxy rapid, no pics as working fast.

Filled up with fresh 20/50 valvoline vr1 racing oil and primed oil system on starter motor, adaptronic handily cuts spark and fuel if you hold throttle 100% when cranking so its dead easy to prime.

Hit the switch and went first go on last years fuel, i cant recall starting it after Anglesey last year so its been almost a year since running.

Running good as usual, appears to be dry underneath at the moment so its a vast improvement.

Dash refitted and steering wheel back on.

Checked front pads whilst wheels were off and the ds2500 arent looking great, they have done a few trackdays so cant moan.

Flaky, bin time.
20240608_133617.jpg

Currently making enquiries on Ds1.11 pads for it, it shares the same pads as clio williams, and some other old french hot hatches. Kamracing used to stock them but not listed have fired an email over, apart from that only place listing them/showing stock is oreca.

If Ds1.11 are a no go ive seen winmax do a decent range or carbon lorraine so there is a few options maybe Winmax W5 Comparable to ds1.11?

Also bought another Rs/Sabelt steering wheel as im taking off the signed one to make a bit of wallart in the house. Arrived in 5 days from Rsperformance/Oreca.

Pukka engraved Rs wheel.

  • New pads and brake fluid flush - will order this week.
  • Tyres - Ar1 in stock so will see about fitting next weekend.
  • Geo - a new geo lift is currently getting installed at my mates garage so will visit after hols.
  • Look at intermittent fuel gauge. Got all parts in stock so should be easy to sort.
  • Change gearbox oil. Prob use redline mtl this time.
  • Tax - will tax on 1st July.
  • Road test - after hols.
As above thats all for now will have a look after hols.

Ordered Ferodo Ds1.11 from Oreca on Monday, arrived today. Quick for overseas, every time ive used them its 4-5days from order. Only place that list them for sale/in stock for gtt too.

Front calipers are dirt cheap so going to stick a set on as the current ones were binding a little a couple of years ago, not been an issue since freeing off but they are literally a third of the price of the pads for a pair, also braided flexis whilst in the area. I believe the discs are spot on but will give them a once over too.

I was going to get them refurbed but i think the ratty look will suit the van and be more discreet than shiny silver steels.

Will be interesting to see how they compare to previously fitted R888R at Anglesey. Sidewall looks thicker and very stiff, so might aid turn in.

Updates.

Thought i best pull my finger out and do a bit to the Extra with Anglesey/CSF only a matter of weeks away.

It has been pissing down with rain all day which put me off doing anything, but with time ticking it needed road testing to check the clio dci steering rack was ok and geo/toe setting up. Thought it would be sensible getting it driving straight before having to bed new discs and pads in at higher speeds.

Fitted the cup wheels with the new Ar1's to replace the baldy r888r. Shuffled the cars about and got it out the garage, fired up as willing as ever on first crank.

First thoughts on clio rack, even when shuffling it on the drive i could tell the steering was vastily improved/useable. I did wonder if it was going to be stupidly heavy/feel like steering column would fall off, but a quick test ride round the block confirmed quite the opposite and quite light so all good to go. Quick stop by tesco for some fresh momentum 99, as was on fumes/last august's fuel.

On the hunter.
20240713_170133.jpg

When checked geo was a country mile off as expected, steering wheel was way off. Set up toe to 10 mins of toe out overall which works well on this, camber still set at -2.7deg so didnt need any adjustments.

Anyway even though wet and fresh Ar1's was not the perfect combo for testing on the way home, the quicker clio rack feels awesome. The steering moves easily when rolling, and actually feels a bit lighter than the old van rack. Feels like a clio on turn in, if it gets out of square on track i can bang the opposite lock in fast instead of doing what feels like several hundred turns on the old van rack.

Sump oil leaks were checked whilst on lift and all looked dry, wont hold my breath on that one though!

Stack dash still my fav.

Heatwave so decide to sort the brakes out on the Extra for CSF.

Give the front brake pipe a quick squirt with plusgas and cracked straight off with my new ching spec ratchet spanner.

Works suprisingly well for a cheapo.
20240719_164732.jpg

Calipers, discs and pafs off and cleaned hubs up to get any rust off, caliper carriers got the same knotted wheel approach.

Everything clean.
20240719_161843.jpg

New parts fitted - trw calipers, brembo hc discs, ferodo ds1.11 pads, goodridge braided flexi hoses and flushed the brake fluid with a ltr of typ200.

Everything new.
20240719_164725.jpg

The old calipers were a little sticky, pads were shot but discs werent too bad, however new front discs were £12 each so no brainer to replace as pads were not cheap.

Took it out for a quick run out to bed the pads in. With one half decent stab of the brake pedal the pads come on and stopping power was right there. Brake pedal feels great and very progressive with loads of stopping power. Loads better than the knackered ds2500 pads.

Quick tweak on geo tomorrow and change gearbox oil.

Sat updates.

Treated it to a new set of plugs as not changed them for years. Old ones were still around 0.7mm gap when checked so wasnt really necessary but at £3 a plug for ngk bcr8es its not hurting.

Brown tinge from MMT in VP racing octanium octane booster i have used in the past.

Next on the agenda was smoke test to boost circuit.

Smokin.

On Fridays road test seemed a little bit down on torque. Found the leak in about ten seconds, one of the Mikalor clamps had backed off and needed tightening up. They are crap and need changing to jcs high grip soon.

Offending clamp.

Gear oil has not been changed for a while. Splashed out on Redline MTL this time.

Smelly expensive s**t.

Took it out for road test and usual power is resumed. Was going to get geo tweaked but the geo computer was down due to that bloody outage!! Will get it done this week.

Mot tomorrow.

Thanks for reading!!

That octane booster has really sent them plugs a funny colour hasn't it!

Not seen that before.

Smoke tester paying for itself again i see. I grabbed one of the Autool SDT-202 i mentioned to you.

It found the gaping big hole my eyes seemed to have missed on the charge pipe on my brother's C Max very easily 😂

Apparantly the MMT in the octane booster does it. First time i had one out to see the evidence.

Smoke machine is mega wish i had invested years ago. I used to pressure the boost circuit up but still difficult to pinpoint small leaks. Can see the smoke straight away.

Updates.

CSF done and dusted.

Started with a 6 Hour journey to get to Anglesey which was awful. Heavy traffic with paddle clutch, bosch 044 fuel pump whine, side exit exhaust drone and ds1.11 pads squealing under light braking does not make a relaxed drive. Only fun part of the journey was the tunnels on the A55 for exhaust noise.

En route and a stop to rest the ears from the fuel pump noise.

Papped adding bit of spicey Vp racing octanium to the tank at Bangor

In total done around 570 mile round trip, with several full send sessions on track. No real issues to report, performed excellent. The clio dci steering rack, overhauled brakes witt ds1.11 pads and fresh Ar1 worked very well. Could do plenty of hot laps back to back on wastegate boost pressure of 12psi, coolant temps mid to high 80s max and oil temps around 100deg.

With the weather spitting rain a little early am i opted to get straight out and have as much seat time as possible and went through almost a tank of fuel and front ns tyre took a bit of a beating to suit.

2.7deg negative camber and outer edge still wearing a bit.

Return journey from Anglesey was much better on the Sunday and a clean run thankfully.

On return i give it a post trackday inspection, jack up and once over to see if any casualties, as its going to Retro Rides gathering this coming weekend at Mallory Park and its booked in for sprint laps.

All looks pretty good when inspected - no play in any suspension components and no oil leaks which is pretty unbelievable.

Post trackday checks.

Noted brakes have been very hot and started melting the paint on the front wheels and paint flaked off the rear drums! Did not have any fade issues at all though and pedal feel/brake power stayed consistent throughout.

Brake pedal travel was a little bit long before biting as noted before setting off to Anglesey but not excessive. The pedal was solid so knew that it needed the drums adjusting.

Quick adjustment.

The paint on the drums has flaked off and heat checks are visible on the drums, it looks like the rears have been super hot. Not the first time however as seen it in the past..needs a disc upgrade really but cant add width on the rear so drums it is!

Drums de lipped with flapper wheel and heat checks visible.

Super easy job usually (he says). Bearing on o/s splits on removal, inner race of bearing separates. This is not uncommon, looks dry so regrease and refit. Retorque the hub nut and the bearing makes a click following with a good 3mm of play. It was the original snr bearing and looked like it had seen better days so i guess its time was up.

Anyway continue on with n/s and the bearing has chucked all its grease out and not too clever so its 2x rear bearings.

Max loading on ns rear on fast corners and bearing no likey after a few trackdays.

Ring up the local motorfactors and they have 1x bearing on the shelf and order another in. 1x apec and 1x napa. Both chinese bearings but dont have time to get snr from autodoc so will do for now.

Had a spare couple of hours this afternoon so proceeded to swap bearings. A simple hour job for both.

O/s first, goes well and old bearing pressed out of drum and new apec bearing in.

20ton press in corner of garage comes in handy.
20240807_145913.jpg

Refitted drum, torqued and checked no play and wheel back on. Repeat on n/s using napa bearing, all goes well removing and refitting, fits bearing to drum and torque to spec and it has 2mm play! I remove and refit and nothing untoward - bearing spacer is present. Remove bearing with press and mic it up and its identical to old one size wise.

Go down the motorfactors assuming its a duff bearing. They swap it for an apec bearing to match other side as have replenished stock.

Press new bearing in and refit. Slight play when torqued to spec, hardly nothing and mot pass acceptable but not good enough.

I strip it down again to check, clean up stub axle etc. Refit and torque, same amount of play. Torqued hub nut up a little tighter and all play is gone. Spins freely so all is good, well itll do for now until i get a decent branded pair of bearings.

After that carry on adding time to the job took it out for a bit of b road blasting and shopping trip this evening.

Its always been noisy in the back with semi slick tyre whine when on the move which makes it difficult to hear any wheel bearing noise, but did have a resonance 50+ mph. That seems to have quietened down a little so assume the dry o/s bearing was on its way.

Brakes feel loads better and pedal travel is short/handbrake 4 clicks slo decent improvements.

Needs a good wash after CSF.

Narrow van wide parking spot.

A quick jack up to check both rear bearings on return home and no play/spin fine so all good.

Ill prob change oil before Mallory as have loads in stock. Apart from that a quick wash and good to go.

Thanks for reading!!

Thats proper french, just needs a baguette in the pic somewhere

There is a lot of love for these old renault vans in france. When i took mine to Lci show in paris a couple of years ago the french loved it as its not possble to make a gtturbo conversion in one legal overseas.
