Porsche Cayman S Race Car

  Lotus Elise
Hi guys,

As some of you will know, we are racing a Porsche Cayman S this in Production Porsche, Britcar and possibly GT Cup/Trophy.

The car:

2006 Porsche Boxster S 3.4
60000 miles FSH
Poverty Spec

So the spec so far:

Dipped shell with custom cages cage
GT3 Front wishbones
GT3 front and rear anti-roll bars
Custom competition spec KWs (possibly Proflex)
PF disks and pads with standard calipers
Hand built exhaust
Plated LSD
300bhp
Fiberglass seats with 6 point harnesses
Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.3s
Fettled loom
Cayman R doors
Cayman R bonnet

This may change slightly depending which championship we enter.

Sorry I meant to Cayman not Boxster

Just ordered the heated front screen and spec'd the air jacks.

Awesome mate :) Look forward to seeing the progress with it! Who's dipping it? E-Coat??

Best of luck with it

Eco dip/Enviro dip can't remember, Specialist Vehicle Preparations are organising it.

I understand you save around 20kg from dipping a clio shell. what sort of weight do you excect to shed from having the porker shell dipped?

We don't know of anyone who has yet, but you can save 40kg on dipping a Boxster shell and around 55kg on a 996 shell. It currently weighs 299kg.

Not bad for a tea boy, your dad is the real baller though ;)

Spending all my sodding inheritance! Not a bad way to do it though.

Dipping means, putting the shell in a big vat of acid to remove all the paint, tar, underseal etc to get it as light as possible.

Your dad's a proper bloke, I'm sure he'll let you have a crack at it when it arrives so it's all good in my eyes lol

On the subject of dipping having dealt with a fair few people doing resto's over the years (yes I know it's a race car not a show car) many have mentioned the acid dipping sometimes leaves some of the dip trapped between panels and can effectively sweat its way back out again in the coming months once the car has been repainted so watch out for that. A few favour media blasting instead.

He let me loose in the last one so I'd hope so.

The reason we chose to dip before the cage was installed was to avoid any acid getting trapped. The guys have drilled a couple of holes to help it drain out too so fingers crossed it will be fine. The downside of sand blasting is it doesn't clean the inside of box sections or inside the sills, fine on a show car but we want added lightness.

I think it can be stubborn clinging on between seams etc where it gets trapped. I presume dipping companies do their best to purge any residue from the shell but just thought I'd give you a heads up mate. Being a race car I know it's going to pick up plenty of battle scars but equally I'm sure you would rather the paint didn't decide it wants to peel off where panels meet if you can help it.

Ahh I'll enquire about that with the preppers. Cheers buddy.

Top work Sam! Might bump into you at a few different rounds this year as I'm running a Porsche and 2 Lotus Europa's in various things including Britcar.

Popped in to see the car today.

Cage is going in but custom cages made some of the bars 20mm too short and that has set us back a week  Its booked in for paint next Monday then a full dry build can commence, the lads were cutting the panels for the aero catches when I was there today.

The engine came back from its health check with no issues just waiting for the shorter belt and lightened pullys. The diff has been dispatched so the box will be off for the rebuild soon.

GT3 arms have arrived and the KWs are currently getting screwed together, chewing over ECUs and looms atm.

how does dipping save that much weight?

Because it removes everything from the shell. All the glue, bonding agents, sound proofing the lot. All the under seal is removed from areas inside the sills and box sections.

A few tacks are needed in the doors as you can feel the skin moving on the frame because all the bonding has gone.

Very cool stuff tbh!

Cheers. :)

Looking good Sam! Who is doing the build?
The 993 I will be looking after probably in some britcar this year went testing yesterday......gearbox coming out this weekend! Maybe he should have checked the box before testing/ fitting it to make sure he had all the gears.
