Big Update is Big!
I'll try not to waffle on as I could write for hours but give you the more interesting developments. We did a trackday at Oulton Park to shake the car down and work through the niggly little problems that had developed from taking all the ECUs and Wiring loom off the car. The most profound issue we found was that of brake temperatures and the road car ABS. PCGB (Production Club Great Britain) Championship dictated we needed 150kg of ballast and standard brakes so its no surprise the brakes couldn't cope.
We then made a few changes to the set up, different pads and fluid and headed to Brands Hatch for the second round of the PCGB Championship. On the test day prior the car felt superbly well balanced but too soft and the brakes were horrible. The ABS was kicking in far too early and was preventing us from trail braking, it also meant the brake temps got far too hot. 30 minutes into the session the engine went bang, in a very big way! We believe this to be down to a very hefty over-rev caused by the brake fade at Oulton. Bloody brakes again! grrrrrr!
After Brands we found a GT3 engine at a very good price and a standard 3.4 engine and box with very good history. The 3.4 went in and the boys set about trying to get the GT3 engine in. (Far more difficult than expected)
Right, so we have a hugely flawed but working racing car and no idea what to race it in. PCGB regs meant the car was being held back massively with all the ballast and standard brakes and wheel sizes etc. The decision was taken to bin it off and concentrate on GT CUP/Britcar were we would need more power, better brakes, better management and more aero.
After weeks of research and fannying about we discovered no one does a motorsport brake kit for the Cayman and 996 Cup car brakes wont go on unless we change the upright and a GT3 Cup car upright isn’t cheap.
Anyway we entered GT Cup at Brands Indy as the grid was nice and small and we had a small amount of data from our test session there. Well the weekend went rather well! Lots of things learnt and we now have a direction for the cars development and what hardware to bolt on. GT Cup has a great format of one 40 minute two driver race and two 25 minute sprint races, this meant lots of 'race testing'.
The 40 minute race went well, we had a few issues in qualifying and we didn't expect much however I managed to get the car within a second of a 996 Carrera Cup car (sequential box, rose joint, 100bhp more aero etc) and within 1.5 seconds of the class leaders. Not bad for its first outing and in a very very basic spec still fighting ABS and set up issues. We were last in class and last overall however after 40 minutes of racing we finished 3rd in class and 8th overall! We were made up and originally just hoping to finish let alone on the podium. Epic.
I managed to secure another 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] in the first sprint race however the gear cable fell off in the second meaning Dad finished 10 laps down. L
We had a lot of minor issues but the major one was snapping both front droplinks, luckily after some cutting and welding my Boxster items went on. It was a very rolly polly drive home
The SVP boys did a bloody brilliant job and it was a pleasant surprise to see Nick who was kind enough to take some stunning pictures.
The next step is Alcon Brakes, solid bushes, yet more stiffer springs and a better seating position. We will be out testing in a few weeks then racing at Outlon on the 13[SUP]th[/SUP] July. Cannot wait!
note fathers track position.
