Gaz.'s 1996 Mazda RX7 FD3S Efini (JDM & Rotary Content)

I've already got quotes to despoiler it, just got more important things to do really. I don't actually mind the spoiler, it's fairly subtle compared to some of the others they came fitted with.

Yesterday was the day I found out if I had truly fixed the misfire on AETMotorsport's dyno. I was there at 2PM, on possibly the hottest day we've had this year, so power was never going to be an amazing figure.

All I can say is, I fixed it :D However, the standard ECU was dog s**t, it wouldn't hold boost after 6000rpm, power was down and the AFRs were in the high 14s/low 15s.

I'd taken my Apexi Power FC along, as last time I was there he said we'll try that once it's fixed. I had to fit the ECU from the driver's side and through the passenger window as the hub dyno was preventing the passenger door from being opened, which was an interesting method!

Anyway, we did a run on it, and everything was much better. The graph below shows the PFC power curves in bold, the OEM in faint. Massive difference.

The AFRs are also a lot better (although could be improved, but my blowing exhaust won't help those readings), as is the boost level.

I don't think 222bhp at the hubs is bad considering how warm a day it was, and the fact that is just a Base map that comes on the ECU. I really enjoyed twatting it down the motorway on the way home, the way the second turbo kicks in is AWESOME. Pissed off a few rep BMWs and an Astra VXR too lol.

Car's off to SlideMotorsport in Featherstone on Friday to get my brake setup fitted and to hopefully find and solve the cause of my bad steering too.

TBH, I think the brakes being warped to f**k have caused most of the steering problems, because they shake the steering super violently so will be hammering the hell out of the components.

It's not a s**tter by a long shot, just nowhere near as it was described. I'll not be falling for the "Forum/Community Well Known Hero so must be spot on" line again. I'm still not even the registered owner yet! I also saved the advert for it, makes me laugh now looking back at it.

Do u know anyone with a dataloggit??? If so I got some better maps u can try....

I haven't seen any plots from stock sequentials so I can't comment but I wouldn't of expected that drop...

Nope.

I don't know, I've read a lot about people trying to achieve a perfect switchover, so it must be normal. I PM'd Mav but no reply.

I know its a completely different car but my friends Legacy B4 is exactly the same when switching between turbos. Similar era/control method i'd have thought.

If your brakes are warped send them down and i'll machine them back true for you :) for free.

Got the car back from it's short stay at SlideMotorsport. Dropped her off on a red hot Friday 2 weeks back...

Don't be fooled by the appearance of their yard, the owner Matt is the first garage I've ever trusted to do any work on a car of mine, and that speaks volumes. His work is second to none, and he's a trustworthy mechanic.

So whilst it's been there he's done a few things I couldn't be bothered to do;

  • Mazda 929 Master Cylinder Swap
  • AP Racing 330mm Brake Conversion up front (EBC Redstuff pads, which will be binned soon as I dislike EBC's products)
  • Braided Brake Lines
  • ABS Delete
  • Swapped a front hub
  • Set the tracking
  • Noticed the exhaust leak so fixed that too.

He was also going to fit me a braided clutch line but it already had one, and he couldn't find any play in the steering system so nothing to repair there.

Big old void left by the ABS pump, will make accessing the spark plugs even easier...

So much nicer being able to brake without loosing my teeth, those brakes were shot. I need to fit some OEM rears when I get round to it, and desperately need an alignment doing as the car feels so damn twitchy on the motorway that you feel like it would swap ends given half a chance!

You lazy git. At least it's been done right!

Whats next? Along with the brakes and alignment.

Make it look less of a turd.

Dude check my comment on Fduk...

It seems OK. If I die you can say i told you so.

Good progress dude.

How low is the chassis to the floor? Does it give you any trouble?

Not as low underneath as the Nissan was (despite rubbing a lot more), although that may change with a 3" exhaust. A little, I avoid speed bumps as much as I can anyway.

Exhaust on the rx7 is up much higher than a 200 lol sills are lower than exhausts even a 4" job lol mine goes 4" to 3" and I would hit the subframe before the exhaust :)

Spent 10 hours of my life machine polishing the car, topped it with a coat of Poorboys Blackhole and a coat of Poorboys Natty paste wax to give it some protection...

It's nowhere near perfect, but it's a lot better. I'll never be truly happy with the paint unless I get it sprayed, but I doubt that'll be happening so I've no choice now but to accept it. This image shows how badly it had faded...

I'll get better pictures probably tomorrow, some planks have been replacing concrete fence posts and I've had to hose the drive down of concrete & cement dust and also mud.

I decided to repair the R-Magic holder that was broken in transit from Japan, rather than risk the same happening again. Fitted it, and I now feel compelled to look at the hand commander a lot

She's also booked in for an alignment at Sherburn Rubber, who align race spec BMWs so hopefully they'll do a good job, and fingers crossed it stops it feeling so damn unsettled. Still need to fit rear discs & pads but I haven't been bothered to paint the discs yet.

That's come up really well. Glad you're finally getting somewhere with it and not just finding problem after problem.

Want to swap it for a money pit, absolutely shagged Mk5 Zetec-S? Thought not :(

Cheers guys. It's glossy, that's about it really. Unfortunately I've found paint runs, filler, sink holes, scratches etc now but oh well.

LOL Rhys, no thanks dude. If I were getting a moneypit Ford, it would be a Sierra Cosworth.

Nice choice. I've been wanting an S1 Escort RS Turbo of late.

With regards to your paint. I know it's a ballsy move and time consuming, but would you not consider wet sanding it? Maybe just do a panel at a time.
